Book excerpt: Because of his background in singing and the immense knowledge that Rabbi Zion Yakar possesses concerning voice production, breath control, the anatomy and physiology of speech, and in-depth spiritual training, he was called upon to help young stutterers overcome their handicap. He found that when he combined his unconventional and unique method of diversionary thinking with his knowledge of human voice-production, his spiritual faith in divine intervention, and psychosomatic instruction in self-renewal, the results were overwhelmingly successful. This book is a culmination of many years of research and positive experiences in working with stutterers. He shares his time-tested and truly unconventional philosophies and practical approaches with stutterers in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Fraser knew from personal experience what the person who stutters is up against. His introduction to stuttering corrective procedures first came at the age of fifteen under the direction of Frederick Martin, M.D., who at that time was Superintendent of Speech Correction for the New York City schools. A few years later, he worked with J. Stanley Smith, L.L.D., a stutterer and philanthropist, who, for altruistic reasons, founded the Kingsley Clubs in Philadelphia and New York that were named after the English author, Charles Kingsley, who also stuttered. The Kingsley Clubs were small groups of adult stutterers who met one night a week to try out treatment ideas then in effect. In fact, they were actually practicing group therapy as they talked about their experiences and exchanged ideas. This exchange gave each of the members a better understanding of the problem. The founder often led the discussions at both clubs. In 1928 Malcolm Fraser joined his older brother Carlyle who founded the NAPA-Genuine Parts Company that year in Atlanta, Georgia. He became an important leader in the company and was particularly outstanding in training others for leadership roles. In 1947, with a successful career under way, he founded the Stuttering Foundation of America. In subsequent years, he added generously to the endowment so that at the present time, endowment income covers over fifty percent of the operating budget. In 1984, Malcolm Fraser received the fourth annual National Council on Communicative Disorders' Distinguished Service Award. The NCCD, a council of 32 national organizations, recognized the Foundation's efforts in "adding to stutterers', parents', clinicians', and the public's awareness and ability to deal constructively with stuttering." Book excerpt: Nina G bills herself as “The San Francisco Bay Area’s Only Female Stuttering Comedian.” On stage, she encounters the occasional heckler, but off stage she is often confronted with people’s comments toward her stuttering; listeners completing her sentences, inquiring, “Did you forget your name?” and giving unwanted advice like “slow down and breathe” are common. (As if she never thought about slowing down and breathing in her over thirty years of stuttering!) When Nina started comedy nearly ten years ago, she was the only woman in the world of stand-up who stuttered—not a surprise, since men outnumber women four to one amongst those who stutter and comedy is a male-dominated profession. Nina’s brand of comedy reflects the experience of many people with disabilities in that the problem with disability isn’t in the person with it but in a society that isn’t always accessible or inclusive.

Book excerpt: How to Stop Stuttering The logical and traditional way to approach stuttering is to try to treat, stop, overcome or manage it. The only problem is, this way often does not work. This guide will present to you another view, one that I think you'll find far more effective and successful in helping you achieve your fluency and life goals. You know that you are capable of being, doing and having more. You know that you are intelligent and are able or want to be able to contribute more to your job, class, family, community and world. But, something has been holding you back. You've felt limited, even controlled by stuttering. Well, the great news is that you can learn to start speaking more smoothly, fluently and confidently, but only IF you approach it from a completely different direction. My name is Michael Williams and I'm the founder of The Start Speaking Training Center and the PRO90D Speech System, and I stuttered for over 20 years. In this guide, I'm going to share with you no only how I have used stuttering as a springboard to excellent speech, but, how I am helping thousands of people around the globe do the same. If you are truly ready to make a change, and have an open mind, I believe you WILL find something in this guide that will truly transform your entire life. And, I don't say that lightly. This guide contains the pure essence of all of the techniques and strategies I use everyday to help people just like you unlock their speaking potential. This is not hype, or theory. My approach to how to stop stuttering draws from the fields of Neuroscience, Neuroplasticity, Accelerated Learning Strategies, High Performance Training and real life experience. May this guide be a true blessing to you and everyone your life touches.

He already knows a lot of jokes, but thinks he has one big problem standing in his way: his stutter. At first, Billy thinks the best way to deal with this is to . . . never say a word. That way, the kids in his new school won’t hear him stammer. But soon he finds out this is NOT the best way to deal with things. (For one thing, it’s very hard to tell a joke without getting a word out.) As Billy makes his way toward the spotlight, a lot of funny things (and some less funny things) happen to him. In the end, the whole school will know -- If you think you can hold Billy Plimpton back, be warned: The joke will soon be on you!

Book excerpt: This big-hearted story of kindness—reminiscent of The Day the Crayons Quit—is written by the bestselling author of Ordinary People Change the World and illustrated by the Caldecott Medal-winning creator of Beekle. Sunday quit, just like that. She said she was tired of being a day. And so the other days of the week had no choice but to advertise: "WANTED: A NEW DAY. Must be relaxing, tranquil, and replenishing. Serious inquires only." Soon lots of hopefuls arrived with their suggestions, such as Funday, Bunday, Acrobaturday, SuperheroDay, and even MonstersWhoResembleJellyfishDay! Things quickly got out of hand . . . until one more candidate showed up: a little girl with a thank-you gift for Sunday. The girl suggested simply a nice day--a day to be kind. And her gratitude made a calendar's worth of difference to Sunday, who decided she didn't need to quit after all. When we appreciate each other a little bit more, all the days of the week can be brand-new days where everything is possible.

Now the puzzle has finally been solved by this outstanding new book which details a completely new approach to treating this debilitating condition. Bob Bodenhamer explains that this phenomenon results from the thinking (cognition) of the stutterer as he or she associates speaking with a lot of fear and anxiety about blocking. This book both explains the structure of blocking and provides the tools for gaining more fluency.

Book excerpt: 'TIMELY' David Mitchell 'MOVING ... REMARKABLE' SUNDAY TIMES 'ONE OF THOSE RARE BOOKS I HADN'T REASLISED I'D BEEN WAITING FOR UNTIL I READ IT.' Owen Sheers 'OPEN-MINDED, THOUGHTFUL AND WISE... A LIBERATING BOOK' Colm Toibin In an age of polished TED talks and overconfident political oratory, success seems to depend upon charismatic public speaking. But what if hyper-fluency is not only unachievable but undesirable? Jonty Claypole spent fifteen years of his life in and out of extreme speech therapy. From sessions with child psychologists to lengthy stuttering boot camps and exposure therapies, he tried everything until finally being told the words he'd always feared: 'We can't cure your stutter.' Those words started him on a journey towards not only making peace with his stammer but learning to use it to his advantage. Here, Jonty argues that our obsession with fluency could be hindering, rather than helping, our creativity, authenticity and persuasiveness. Exploring other speech conditions, such as aphasia and Tourette's, and telling the stories of the 'creatively disfluent' - from Lewis Carroll to Kendrick Lamar - Jonty explains why it's time for us to stop making sense, get tongue tied and embrace the life-changing power of inarticulacy.
