Download or read book American Survivors written by Naoko Wake and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Survivors is a fresh and moving historical account of U.S. survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, breaking new ground not only in the study of World War II but also in the public understanding of nuclear weaponry. A truly trans-Pacific history, American Survivors challenges the dualistic distinction between Americans-as-victors and Japanese-as-victims often assumed by scholars of the nuclear war. Using more than 130 oral histories of Japanese American and Korean American survivors, their family members, community activists, and physicians - most of which appear here for the first time - Naoko Wake reveals a cross-national history of war, illness, immigration, gender, family, and community from intimately personal perspectives. American Survivors brings to light the history of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that connects, as much as separates, people across time and national boundaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New York Times bestseller Kody Keplinger comes an astonishing and thought-provoking exploration of the aftermath of tragedy, the power of narrative, and how we remember what we've lost. It's been three years since the Virgil County High School Massacre. Three years since my best friend, Sarah, was killed in a bathroom stall during the mass shooting. Everyone knows Sarah's story--that she died proclaiming her faith. But it's not true. I know because I was with her when she died. I didn't say anything then, and people got hurt because of it. Now Sarah's parents are publishing a book about her, so this might be my last chance to set the record straight . . . but I'm not the only survivor with a story to tell about what did--and didn't--happen that day. Except Sarah's martyrdom is important to a lot of people, people who don't take kindly to what I'm trying to do. And the more I learn, the less certain I am about what's right. I don't know what will be worse: the guilt of staying silent or the consequences of speaking up . . .

Book excerpt: They entered the clinic through a rear door. The sounds of shouting followed by gun shots stopped them where they were. The two were unarmed and from the tumult, decided they were outnumbered. Without a word, Ed slipped the latch so the door would lock, and they stepped outside into the cold again. There were so many tracks in the snow it would be difficult for trackers to tell one from the other. But they couldn’t use their cars. As soon as an engine turned over, it would be heard by the intruders. They retraced their steps and angled through the frozen undergrowth, around toward the front of the compound. Both were eager to see who had come calling on Dr. Spregg. As they made the circuit, Ed put his hand on Sir James sleeve. They halted. Up ahead on a rise, which met the end of the parking lot, stood a tall figure holding a rifle, its scope and size betrayed its Russian manufacture. The two men crouched down, blending into the winter landscape. Ed calmly pulled the string from the hood of his parka, and as his father watched, quickly fashioned a small strong garrote. He made his way up the rise, and smelled the acrid cigarette smoke from the man.
Book Synopsis Canadian Warbird Survivors by : Harold A. Skaarup
Download or read book Canadian Warbird Survivors written by Harold A. Skaarup and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-11-29 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook is to provide aviation enthusiasts with a simple checklist on where to find the surviving retired military aircraft that are preserved in Canada. The majority of the Canadian Warbird Survivors are on display within a great number of well maintained aviation museums, many others are displayed as gate guards near or in a number of Canadian Forces Bases, and a good number are in the hands of private collectors. Many are not listed in any catalogue, but have been found by word of mouth, or personal observation. The museum staffs and volunteer organizations throughout Canada have done a particularly good job of preserving the great variety of Canadian military aircraft, illustrated here. Hopefully, as more aircraft are recovered from their crash sites in the bush and restored, traded or brought back from private owners, they too will be added to the record. The book lists the aircraft alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. This list is also appended with a brief summary of the aircraft presently on display within the nation and a bit of its history within the Canadian Forces. Canadian Warbirds books are available through the iUniverse.com or the Amazon.com online bookstores.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general background of the groups investigated The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the severe psychic and physical stress situations to which human beings were exposed in the concentration camps of World \Var II have had lasting psychological results, to discover the nature of these conditions and the symptomatology they present, and finally to investigate which detailed factors of the above-mentioned stress situation can be con sidered decisive for the morbid conditions which were revealed. In order to elucidate these questions from different points of view, I have examined groups of former concentration camp inmates both in Norway and Israel. The Norwegians who were examined compose a fairly uniform group of men and women, born and bred in Norway, who after the War naturally returned to their native country. The Israeli groups which were examined were drawn from almost every country in Europe that had been under German occupation during World War II. They had all immigrated into Israel, mostly after 1948.

Book Synopsis 50 Women against Hitler by : Stephan D. Yada-Mc Neal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the resistance is to this day a barely treated topic of the historiography of World War II. But many successful actions of the Allies, the knowledge of German activities would not have been possible without the perilous use of women. Whether as spies, as couriers of important news, in the supply and accommodation of resistance fighters or refugee soldiers of the Allies, without the energetic help of women many lives would have been lost. This book tries to use examples of women from different countries to record how active and sometimes very effective their work was. But this book also commemorates those women who lost their lives in this fight against oppression, occupation and barbarism.
