Book excerpt: NNN06 was the sixth in a series of workshops to discuss experiments that go beyond the reach of current projects. Papers in these Proceedings survey the status of results from current neutrino oscillations and nucleon decay searches, theoretical interpretations of the existing results and the goals for future nucleon decay and neutrino detector, ideas for new massive underground detectors, and very long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

Book excerpt: Even after more than 40 years of experimentation we have not observed the decay of the basic constituent of everyday matter: the proton. So far, the proton appears to be completely stable. This is very puzzling because reasonable models of physics predict that protons after living very long should break apart into lighter particles such as electrons, muons, and pions. Over the last several decades both the experiments and the theory of particles have become increasingly sophisticated. The latest and best experiment (Super-Kamiokande) is in the Kamioka mine in Japan: it has monitored 20,000 tons of water for more than 3 years to see decays of protons; none has been found. Yet the sheer size and precision of this experiment has allowed it to find evidence for neutrino mass by observing oscillations of neutrinos generated in the earth's atmosphere by high energy cosmic rays from outer space. Similar detectors in the past have observed neutrinos from the Sun as well as from Supernova explosions. This workshop was intended to find the next step in this process of experimentation. Should we continue the search for proton decay? The answer from this conference seems to be a definite yes! However, the answer for what sensitivity to achieve seems to be mixed. Regardless of the exact answer about the type and size of the next detector, this project will be much larger than any of the previous projects. Therefore we need to create a consensus in the international physics community and also explore the likely synergistic impact of such a project on other fields of research such as neutrino physics and astrophysics.

Book excerpt: We review the status of theoretical expectations and experimental searches for nucleon decay, and predict the sensitivities which could be reached by future experiments. For the immediate future, we concur with the conclusions of the 1982 Summer Workshop on Proton Decay Experiments: all detectors now in operation or construction will be relatively insensitive to some potentially important decay modes. Next-generation experiments must therefore be designed to search for these modes, and should be undertaken whether or not present experiments detect nucleon decay in other modes. These future experiments should be designed to push the lifetime limits on all decay modes to the levels at which irreducible cosmic-ray neutrino-induced backgrounds become important. Since the technology for these next-generation experiments is available now, the timetable for starting work on them will be determined by funding constraints and not by the need for extensive development of detectors. Efforts to develop advanced detector techniques should also be pursued, in order to mount more sensitive searches than can be envisioned using current technology, or to provide the most precise measurements possible of the properties of the nucleon decay interaction if it should occur at a detectable rate.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The LAGUNA/LBNO consortium proposes a next generation neutrino observatory to address fundamental questions in particle and astroparticle physics [89]. The first option of the Design Study consists of a far detector, in its first stage a 20 kt LAr double phase TPC and a magnetised iron calorimeter, situated at 2300 km from CERN inside the Pyhasalmi mine and a near detector based on a high-pressure argon gas TPC. The very long baseline allows a precise neutrino spectrum shape determination over the lst and 2nd oscillation maxima and will therefore allow the exploration of the L/E behavior, distinguishing the e-ects arising from !cP and the neutrino propagation in matter clarifying the ordering of the masses of neutrinos and measuring the CP phase. In parallel, it will allow to investigate a broad astrophysics program including Supernovae neutrino detection and proton decay. The second option of the LAGUNA/LBNO Design Study is a Megaton scale Water Cherenkov detector (MEMPHYS) installed under the Frejus mountain (130 km from CERN) with the aim to determine the CP violation in the leptonic sector and to study astrophysical sources of neutrinos as well as atmospheric neutrinos and proton decay. In both cases a dedicated neutrino beam from CERN is assumed. This PhD work is a detailed study for the evaluation of the physics potential of both options putting in evidence the advantages and the differences of the two technologies. This thesis will detail the reasons of the choice of a Giant double phase Liquid Argon detector at a very long baseline taking into account also the latest improvements in the knowledge of the neutrino oscillation parameters from current experiments and considering future beam layouts and complementary baselines. It will be proven that LBNO can guarantee the Mass Hierarchy determination within the first years of run and a 5 sigma coverage of most of the phase space in about 10 years of run.

Book excerpt: The workshop has reviewed progress towards the future generation of neutrino oscillation experiments. These experiments will use very intense conventional neutrino beams and novel beams derived from muons or radioactive nuclei. These new facilities will provide a broad research front including muon physics and neutrino scattering experiments. The main technical challenges involve construction of very intense proton beams, targeting, effective capture of produced particles, cooling and ultra-fast acceleration of the resulting muons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively addresses the physics and engineering aspects of human physiology by using and building on first-year college physics and mathematics. Topics include the mechanics of the static body and the body in motion, the mechanical properties of the body, muscles in the body, the energetics of body metabolism, fluid flow in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, the acoustics of sound waves in speaking and hearing, vision and the optics of the eye, the electrical properties of the body, and the basic engineering principles of feedback and control in regulating all aspects of function. The goal of this text is to clearly explain the physics issues concerning the human body, in part by developing and then using simple and subsequently more refined models of the macrophysics of the human body. Many chapters include a brief review of the underlying physics. There are problems at the end of each chapter; solutions to selected problems are also provided. This second edition enhances the treatments of the physics of motion, sports, and diseases and disorders, and integrates discussions of these topics as they appear throughout the book. Also, it briefly addresses physical measurements of and in the body, and offers a broader selection of problems, which, as in the first edition, are geared to a range of student levels. This text is geared to undergraduates interested in physics, medical applications of physics, quantitative physiology, medicine, and biomedical engineering.

Book excerpt: Bringing together experts from 15 countries, this book is based on the lectures and contributions of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on “Nanotechnological Basis for Advanced Sensors” held in Sozopol, Bulgaria, 30 May - 11 June, 2010. It gives a broad overview on this topic, and includes articles on: techniques for preparation and characterization of sensor materials; different types of nanoscaled materials for sensor applications, addressing both their structure (nanoparticles, nanocomposites, nanostructured films, etc.) and chemical nature (carbon-based, oxides, glasses, etc.); and on advanced sensors that exploit nanoscience and nanotechnology. In addition, the volume represents an interdisciplinary approach with authors coming from diverse fields such as physics, chemistry, engineering, materials science and biology. A particular strength of the book is its combination of longer papers, introducing the basic knowledge on a certain topic, and brief contributions highlighting special types of sensors and sensor materials.
