Book excerpt: The question in the title of this book draws attention to the shortcomings of a concept that has become a political tool of global importance even as the scientific basis for its use grows weaker. The concept of desertification, it can be argued, has ceased to be analytically useful and distorts our understanding of social-environmental systems and their resiliency, particularly in poor countries with variable rainfall and persistent poverty. For better policy and governance, we need to reconsider the scientific justification for international attempts to combat desertification. Our exploration of these issues begins in the Sahel of West Africa, where a series of severe droughts at the end of the 20th century led to the global institutionalization of the idea of desertification. It now seems incontrovertible that these droughts were not caused primarily by local land use mismanagement, effectively terminating a long-standing policy and scientific debate. There is now an opportunity to treat this episode as an object lesson in the relationship between science, the formation of public opinion and international policy-making. Looking beyond the Sahel, the chapters in this book provide case studies from around the world that examine the use and relevance of the desertification concept. Despite an increasingly sophisticated understanding of dryland environments and societies, the uses now being made of the desertification concept in parts of Asia exhibit many of the shortcomings of earlier work done in Africa. It took scientists more than three decades to transform a perceived desertification crisis in the Sahel into a non-event. This book is an effort to critically examine that experience and accelerate the learning process in other parts of the world.

It contains 38 chapters about important people, places and events in the history of Windsor Locks. Windsor Locks history goes from 1663, when the first settlers reached the Pine Meadow section of the town of Windsor, CT. In 1854, the Pine Meadow section of WIndsor was incorporated into the separate town of Windsor Locks. So the history of WIndsor Locks goes from 1663 to the current time (2022), which is about three and a half centuries. The first two books of this series present chapters on important people, places and events in that history. Windsor Locks History: Volume III presents a number of sets of photo of the town taken from about 1880 to 1960, and as well as more descriptive chapters. The fourth book in the series is "Understanding Windsor Locks History", which focusses on the overeall structure of that history, dividing the three and a half centuries into four distinct phases that the town's evolution that the tow has gone through. It presents "chronological historiies" of the town by three different people, and ties together the stories of the first three books to the chronological history of the town. Descriptive histories give detailed accounts of the people, places and events, while the chronological histories list the events in the order in which they occurred. You can read either approach first, but tying the two together results in a deeper understanding of the town's history.

Provides a holistic interpretation of the interplay between religion and folk cosmology, challenging the stereotypes that relegate traditional people to backwardness and a peripheral space or locality. Within this Muslim society the global/local nexus is one of ongoing creative integration, not separation. The cosmology can best be understood in the context of its totality, encompassing both visible and invisible zones. Muslims articulate personal or private order as well as social order within their cosmology. This cosmological view, endowing people with a unique imaginative sense of engagemenet with a supraphenomenal reality, accentuates the belief that divine cosmic invisible higher power surpasses any other power. Such a belief represents an inexhaustible source of spiritual and emotional empowerment that may be politically mobilized in certain critical moments and depicted as a religious, holy struggle, or jihad.
