Download or read book Chanakya Niti written by and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2020-02-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chanakya's numerous sayings on life and living — popularized in the wake of his successful strategy to put Chandragupta Maurya on the throne, if legend is to be believed — have been compiled in numerous collections and anthologies over time. This entire corpus was referred to as Chanakya Niti. These aphorisms, which continue to be recalled and quoted in many parts of India, primarily deal with everyday living: with family and social surroundings, friends and enemies, wealth and knowledge, and the inevitable end of everything. They also advise on the good and bad in life, proper and improper conduct, and how to manage many difficult situations. A.N.D. Haksar's wonderful translation also places this work into context, showing how these verses have endured in the popular imagination for so long.
Book Synopsis Swapna Saraswatha - Gopalakrishna Pai by : Gopalakrishna Pai
Download or read book Swapna Saraswatha - Gopalakrishna Pai written by Gopalakrishna Pai and published by Manipal Universal Press. This book was released on with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swapna Saraswatha is the saga of migration of a community called Saraswaths in the west coast of India, extending from Goa to the south of Mangalore. It captures the dominance of a colonial power over the region that began with the entry of the Portuguese about four hundred years ago. The novel is a graphic description of the displacement of this strongly-rooted community which saw its resurrection in a new area. In the course of its narrative, the novel traces the gradual changes in the structure of the family that moved from a closely knit joint family of the bygone era to the nuclear family. It also deals with the factors that are responsible for the moral degeneration of individuals in the wake of such paradigm shifts. With its vast canvas, it remarkably weaves fiction with myth and history, peppered with cultural details and linguistic nuances. The narration in Swapna Saraswatha progresses in the form of an epic detailing the story of nine generations spread over a period of two hundred and fifty years from 1510 to about 1760. It encompasses more than a hundred and fifty characters which include Hindus, Muslims, Christians, chieftains, traders, farmers, priests and black magicians, and covers a range of themes spread across folk tales, legends, armies, myths and a sprinkling of history.

Book Synopsis Hinduism and the Ethics of Warfare in South Asia by : Kaushik Roy
Download or read book Hinduism and the Ethics of Warfare in South Asia written by Kaushik Roy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the view, common among Western scholars, that precolonial India lacked a tradition of military philosophy. It traces the evolution of theories of warfare in India from the dawn of civilization, focusing on the debate between Dharmayuddha (Just War) and Kutayuddha (Unjust War) within Hindu philosophy. This debate centers around four questions: What is war? What justifies it? How should it be waged? And what are its potential repercussions? This body of literature provides evidence of the historical evolution of strategic thought in the Indian subcontinent that has heretofore been neglected by modern historians. Further, it provides a counterpoint to scholarship in political science that engages solely with Western theories in its analysis of independent India's philosophy of warfare. Ultimately, a better understanding of the legacy of ancient India's strategic theorizing will enable more accurate analysis of modern India's military and nuclear policies.
