Download or read book Breast Cancer Essentials written by Mahdi Rezai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-27 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cancer is a disease requiring multidisciplinary management including surgery, medical and radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, nuclear medicine, genetic counseling, and psychological support. Each member of the team needs to be updated continuously on breast cancer treatment because of its rapidly changing nature. From the diagnostic procedures to operations and even in metastatic stages of breast cancer, surgeons play an essential part in multidisciplinary teams. After standard surgical options, oncoplastic breast surgery is rapidly becoming one of the most important surgical topics that should be learned by attending surgeons. The idea of writing this book stemmed from a collaboration between the European Academy of Senology (EAoS), European Institute of Oncology (IEO), Euro-Asian Society of Mastology (ESOMA), and SENATURK (Turkish Academy of Senology), which have been working together to promote better training in breast care for professionals. The book offers invaluable support for breast surgeons by covering critical and essential information in senology. It will also greatly benefit the other members of multidisciplinary teams, surgery residents, gynecologists, and plastic and reconstructive surgeons.

Download or read book Flat written by Catherine Guthrie and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A feminist breast cancer memoir of medical trauma, love, and how she found the strength to listen to her body. As a young, queer woman, Catherine Guthrie had worked hard to feel at home in her body. However, after years writing about women’s health and breast cancer, Guthrie is thrust into the role of the patient after a devastating diagnosis at age thirty-eight. At least, she thinks, I know what I'm up against. She was wrong. In one horrifying moment after another, everything that could go wrong does—the surgeon gives her a double mastectomy but misses the cancerous lump, one of the most effective drug treatments fails, and a doctor's error may have unleashed millions of breast cancer cells into her body. Flat is Guthrie’s story of how two bouts of breast cancer shook her faith in her body, her relationship, and medicine. Along the way, she challenges the view that breasts are essential to femininity and paramount to a woman’s happiness. Ultimately, she traces an intimate portrayal of how cancer reshapes her relationship with Mary, her partner, revealing—in the midst of crisis—a love story. Filled with candor, vulnerability, and resilience, Guthrie upends the “pink ribbon” narrative and offers a unique perspective on womanhood, what it means to be “whole,” and the importance of women advocating for their desires. Flat is a story about how she found the strength to forge an unconventional path—one of listening to her body—that she’d been on all along.

Book Synopsis Losing the Girls by : Shirley Alarie
Download or read book Losing the Girls written by Shirley Alarie and published by . This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delve into the breast cancer journey and beyond in Losing the Girls, a unique memoir differentiated by the author's cutting-edge nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) a little-known breast cancer surgery technique that leaves the breast completely whole. Shirley Alarie shares her story to boost awareness of this specialized procedure, which is only offered at select hospitals. She believes that women facing mastectomies deserve to know all of their options. Shirley found that the biggest challenge of her life began with a convoluted breast cancer diagnosis; and then there was the overwhelming array of surgery options. Mastectomy or lumpectomy? Single mastectomy or double? Reconstruction or no reconstruction? She worried about making the right choice and how her decision would affect her both in the short and long term. How would it affect her marriage? Was it crazy to choose a hospital three hours from home? After the surgery, Shirley's determination to beat the cancer triggered a lifestyle transformation that resulted in a stronger, more empowered woman. Her deep faith in God and her peace with the afterlife helped shape her response to this life-changing ordeal with cancer and the love and support of an amazing posse of family and friends, along with a liberal dose of humor and hope, pulled her through the darkness and back into the warm, sunny light. Losing the Girls is a powerful and uplifting book that every woman and the people who love them should read. About the Author: Shirley Alarie wrote her memoir in order to spread awareness of NSM, and she published a website that identifies some of the hospitals that perform this surgery. Book Synopsis Nipple Areola Complex Sparing Mastectomy on Prophylactic and Oncologic Surgery. Potential Impact of Its Application in a Referral Centre and Literature Review by :
Download or read book Nipple Areola Complex Sparing Mastectomy on Prophylactic and Oncologic Surgery. Potential Impact of Its Application in a Referral Centre and Literature Review written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction/Background: Even though breast conserving therapy has become the gold standard surgical treatment for breast cancer, in our institution 34.7% of the patients still undergo mastectomy. Nipple sparing mastectomy (NSM) is becoming widely accepted, particularly in those patients that undergo prophylactic surgery with reconstruction, due to its superior cosmetic results. NSM can also be used in highly selected cancer patients as an effective procedure if it does not compromise oncologic safety.Methodology: Literature review of the nipple areola complex (NAC) sparing mastectomy on prophylactic and breast cancer management. Additionally we evaluate the impact it would have in our referral centre, selecting patients, among those who underwent a mastectomy between 2015-2018, according to the inclusion criteria of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) 2017 Guidelines. Results: There are no randomized trials of NSM. Long-term follow-up in clinical series is limited and most of the studiesu2019 samples are heterogeneous. The available data shows an overall survival of over 90% and local disease recurrence of 3-4.6%. 2017 NCCN Guidelines suggest the use of NSM in patients with early-stage tumours, biologically favourable carcinomas and infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC) or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) that are >2cm from the nipple. Despite total removal of glandular breast tissue and the low rate of recurrence and/or nipple involvement expected, assessment of nipple free margins should be mandatory to reduce the risk of occult NAC involvement. In our Institution (H.U. 12 de Octubre, Madrid) 178 mastectomies were performed for breast cancer treatment and 18 for risk reduction between 2015-2018. According to the inclusion criteria of the NCCN Guidelines, 57 patients (29%) could have undergone a NSM (27 patients with IDC, 12 with DCIS and 18 BRCA mutation carriers). Conclusion: NSM has become a subject of increased attention. Itu2019s a safe option of treatment in patients with early-stage tumours and biologically favourable carcinomas. Disclosures: Prospective trials, with long-term follow up and homogenous samples are needed to establish the inclusion criteria and management of this patients: pathologic factors (tumour stage, molecular subtypesu2026), preoperative imaging study, safety distance of the tumour to the nipple, surgical technique, intraoperative study of the NAC (frozen section examination), and role of radiotherapy.
Download or read book Now What? written by Amy Curran Baker and published by Demos Medical Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2008, Amy Curran Baker was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma and opted for bilateral mastectomy with Direct to Implant Reconstruction. Within three weeks of being diagnosed she had a mastectomy and was on the road to recovery. But after the surgery she had a lot of questions, the same that most women will have. As an Occupational Therapist, she knew some of the answers from her own clinical training and experience. But many more came from speaking with other women who had undergone mastectomies, from researching message boards, and a little bit of luck. Now she and her co-authors have brought together the answers to the questions that women face in chapters that cover everything from how to prepare for going to the hospital to when you come home" -- publisher's web site.
Book Synopsis Mitigating the impact of skin necrosis in reconstruction after nipple-sparing mastectomy by : Grant G. Black
Download or read book Mitigating the impact of skin necrosis in reconstruction after nipple-sparing mastectomy written by Grant G. Black and published by OAE Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2023-06-28 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skin flap necrosis is a common postoperative complication after breast reconstruction, with an incidence of up to 43.4% among patients undergoing nipple-sparing mastectomy. Necrosis can adversely impact aesthetics due to the need to excise nonviable tissue, and increase the risks of infection, implant loss, nipple-areola complex sacrifice and malposition. Patient-specific factors including age, body mass index, and breast size may affect the risk of necrosis. Mastectomy and reconstruction techniques (i.e., choosing between skin- and nipple-sparing mastectomy, and between autologous and alloplastic reconstruction) may also influence necrosis rates. Intraoperative measures such as indocyanine green angiography and autologous skin banking, and the postoperative use of nitroglycerin paste for high-risk patients and warming blankets for autologous reconstruction are methods to help prevent and minimize the morbidity of skin necrosis. Herein, we share our institution’s approaches to predicting and mitigating skin necrosis, and methods of optimizing outcomes for breast reconstruction patients.
