Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Lynne Truss did for grammar in Eats, Shoots & Leaves, Andrew Hodges now does for mathematics. Andrew Hodges, one of Britain’s leading biographers and mathematical writers, brings numbers to three-dimensional life in this delightful and illuminating volume, filled with illustrations, which makes even the most challenging math problems accessible to the layperson. Inspired by millennia of human attempts to figure things out, this pithy book, which tackles mathematical conundrums from the ancient Greeks to superstring theory, finds a new twist to everything from musical harmony to code breaking, from the chemistry of sunflowers to the mystery of magic squares. Starting with the puzzle of defining unity, and ending with the recurring nines of infinite decimals, Hodges tells a story that takes in quantum physics, cosmology, climate change, and the origin of the computer. Hodges has written a classic work, at once playful but satisfyingly instructional, which will be ideal for the math aficionado and the Sudoku addict as well as for the life of the party.

Book excerpt: This book is only about numbers. Every number is unique and has its own speciality. Each number has some unique properties. The numbers starting with zero up to nine are discussed in each chapter. When used as a counting number, zero means that no objects are present. It is the only integer (and in fact the only real number) that is neither negative nor positive. Among the whole numbers or integers, zero is unique. Numbers are fascinatingly complex in their relationships. There is beauty and magic in each number. The numbers also have a gender and can be male or female. Numbers have been classified in to odd and even. A number can be prime or composite. Number two is called the "oddest prime" because it is the only even prime number. Two and three have been called the "Siamese twins" among the primes, since they are the only two which are not separated by a composite number. You will read about Prime numbers, Perfect numbers, Lucky numbers, Happy numbers, Fermat numbers and a lot more numbers in this book. Nine is the last single digit number and it is peculiar in many respects. Figurate numbers starting with square and triangular numbers proceed up to nonagonal numbers. Magic squares composed of figurate numbers have been included. Numbers play an important part in any language especially so in English. Idioms and phrases using the numbers zero to nine along with their meanings have been discussed in Appendix A. Indian mythology and Sanskrit language contain several references to numbers and these are highlighted. Number recreations eventually come to Number Amusements. Students and others with an interest in mathematics for entertainment will enjoy reading this book. At the end of the book, one chapter is devoted to arithmetical problems. Over 200 questions have been included which vary in their difficulty from very simple to moderate and complex. Any person with even a slight interest in mathematics also will find this book very useful.

Throughout the book a historical perspective has been adopted and emphasis is given to some of the subject's applied aspects; in particular the field of cryptography is highlighted. At the heart of the book are the major number theoretic accomplishments of Euclid, Fermat, Gauss, Legendre, and Euler, and to fully illustrate the properties of numbers and concepts developed in the text, a wealth of exercises have been included. It is assumed that the reader will have 'pencil in hand' and ready access to a calculator or computer. For students new to number theory, whatever their background, this is a stimulating and entertaining introduction to the subject.

Bestselling author Daniel Tammet (Thinking in Numbers) is virtually unique among people who have severe autistic disorders in that he is capable of living a fully independent life and able to explain what is happening inside his head. He sees numbers as shapes, colors, and textures, and he can perform extraordinary calculations in his head. He can learn to speak new languages fluently, from scratch, in a week. In 2004, he memorized and recited more than 22,000 digits of pi, setting a record. He has savant syndrome, an extremely rare condition that gives him the most unimaginable mental powers, much like those portrayed by Dustin Hoffman in the film Rain Man. Fascinating and inspiring, Born on a Blue Day explores what it’s like to be special and gives us an insight into what makes us all human—our minds.

From there, the author takes the reader on a guided tour of how this amazing principle can be used to ensure that the reader never again makes a simple mistake in a math problem using a simple process that's easier to do than the math we all know. This book is a must read for anyone that wants to improve the accuracy of their math or has wondered why numbers work the way they do.

What is dark matter and why do astronomers think it pervades the universe? How heavy is the vacuum? How do galaxies form? Michael Rowan-Robinson answers these and many more questions in a highly original and intriguing way. He encapsulates our current knowledge (both what we do and don't know) of the origin and the nature of the universe into nine numbers. These cosmic numbers appear to be independent characteristics of our universe and include its age, the Hubble constant (a measure of its rate of expression), and the density of matter in the universe. Only one of the nine numbers is known with real precision, and four of them only poorly known. The complex ideas that underpin modern cosmology such as the origin of the elements and quantum theory are explained clearly and accessibly, and more speculative ideas like inflation and superstrings are also covered, but with a refreshing scepticism. While most of what we know has been learnt during the 20th century, Rowan-Robinson provides a historical perspective, paying homage to the achievements of the Greeks, Renaissance astronomers, and the age of Newton. He ends the book with a look to the future, predicting that with the further space missions we will accurately know the nine numbers described in this book by the year 2015, but concludes that the origin of the Big Bang itself will still be a mystery by the end of the twenty-first century, and perhaps even in the year 3000.

Set in Munich, the story follows Pip for a year as she crashes from one embarrassing, awkward mistake to the next. Finally, as she starts to emerge from her fog of grief, she travels with the von Feldsteins to Sydney where, amid the drama of the 2000 Olympic Games, everything that can go wrong, does go wrong. Can Pip protect herself and the people she loves? Does she have the courage to tell the truth, even if it destroys her?
