Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume documents the changes taking place in local community practices globally. Digital technologies and globalization have forced evolutions in how we go about producing and consuming journalism, and these essays empirically and theoretically advance the scholarly conversations about those trends. What does it mean to serve the information needs of a community in a digitized social world where so many of our ties – weak and strong – are at least partially maintained in virtual worlds? With authors and data from all over the world, this work celebrates a fundamental connectedness to citizens and their community and renews the emphasis on home as a mandate for any locally focused news organization. The contributions to this volume explore the "flows" within both digital spaces and geographic places that are an important foreground to any conversation about what is community today. Several terms are coined and explored in the volume, including "geosocial journalism" and "reciprocal journalism" that account for the essentiality of information sharing in global public realms to inspire feelings of community belonging. Other chapters include a review of Patch.com – one of the largest grassroots, digital platforms for journalism – a survey of how Norwegian community media organizations are adapting to digital worlds, how Swedish citizen sites operate, and the ethics of community journalists to advocate for their citizenry regarding digital matters. Venturing towards both optimism and dismay, the collection argues that understandings of communal borders have expanded. So even if journalists cannot reach the current locals (such as in Africa as one chapter relates) or globally transient locals, digital technologies can help relocate fractured community into a less problematic, virtual space. This requires commitment on the part of both journalists and citizens to preserve those connections, utilize those technologies, and exercise those fundamental principles of community journalism that go back more than half a century. This book was originally published as a special issue of Journalism Practice.

This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of relations between the Spanish and the Indians of colonial Central America, often oversimplified as a story of unending Spanish abuse, forms a complicated tapestry of economics and politics. Robert W. Patch's even-handed study of the repartimientode mercancías—the commercial dealings between regional magistrates and the people under their jurisdiction—reveals the inner workings of colonialism in Central America. Indians were at the heart of the colonial economy. They made up the majority of the population, produced most of the goods, and performed most of the labor. The bureaucrats who ruled over them were badly paid, and to increase their income, they carried out illegal business activities with the Indians and sometimes even non-Indians. This book analyzes these commercial exchanges in colonial Central America within the context of a colonial regime dependent for income on taxes paid by Indians. Patch demonstrates that the magistrates frequently used repartimientos illegally to facilitate tax collection and then justified their actions by claiming that such commerce was necessary for the survival of colonialism. At the same time, the commerce contributed to the development of regional economies and the integration of the regions into the world economy. Patch’s case studies of highland Guatemala and Nicaragua reveal how the system worked at the regional and local levels. These studies manifest not only the profits to be made through repartimientos but also the problems faced by magistrates as they tried to be government officials and businessmen at the same time. The Spanish government eventually imposed reforms to make the colonial bureaucracy more honest by eliminating the repartimiento system. The reforms, however, also resulted in economic decline and political disaffection among the Hispanic population. Patch’s book, therefore, covers a crucial phase in the history of Central America as the region moved from colonialism to independence.

Book excerpt: Grow a flower garden in beautiful fabrics to grace your bed or wall as Eleanor Burns presents Magic Vine. The patterns for Magic Vine originated in the 1930's in a newspaper quilt column written by Florence LaGanke Harris. As part of a series, LaGanke presented one new pattern each week. In addition to the pattern, the reader was treated to a fictitious story about a quilt group and their leader, Nancy Page. In the group, they shared stories, and decided on what colors to use for their flowers. Twenty-two flowers are appliqued in rows with twinning vines. It is magical because of the variety of flowers that grow on the vine. The vine grows quickly, like the magic vine in Jack and the Beanstalk. Whimsical flowers and leaves are easily made, using lightweight paper backed adhesive or the quick turn method using non-woven fusible interfacing. The outside edges are finished with a variety of techniques: satin stitch, blanket stitch, blind hemstitch, and hand applique. Give Magic Vine a traditional 1930's look using reproduction fabrics or bright and contemporary with vibrant batiks. Enjoy embellishing the flowers with hand or machine stitches, beads, and crystals. Eleanor offers assistance on fabric selection and yardage and cutting charts for all five quilt sizes. Bonus projects are included. The book is conveniently bound in wire-o to lay flat.
