Book excerpt: Nine Girls, No Boys is a collection of true stories of a family in rural Virginia—Daddy, Mama and nine children. All girls. No boys. For young Black parents trying to rear a large family in the 40s, 50s and 60s, there were tough times with years of struggle. Stories are funny, sad, depressing as well as triumphant. Being sharecroppers, the family deals with sub-standard farmhouses and landowners who are difficult. Moves from one farm to another take place as the family continues to grow. Daddy and Mama yearn for a home of their own. When Daddy gets his first tractor he has farmed so long with mules he uses the same commands to try to stop the tractor. He has to learn that saying “whoa” doesn’t work with the tractor. The brake has to be applied instead. Choosing appropriate names for the girls becomes an ordeal. With the assistance of relatives and older ladies in the community, some of the names chosen cause much ridicule and anguish for the girls. Having one car to transport a family of eleven provides interesting episodes. A door that swings open when Daddy makes turns while driving the car endangers the family. Holes in the floorboard of the car are hazardous as well as convenient at times. The family has its share of emergencies. Daddy’s controlled burning gets out of control, and endangers the farm and the entire community. One child swallows an object and has to seek medical attention. Another is burned badly as her clothes catch fire while she tries to stay warm in the poorly heated farmhouse. Segregated two-room schools with long distances to walk impact the girls’ educational opportunities and school attendance. Having to help Daddy with farm chores also makes attending school difficult. Teenage years and dating provide interesting reading. Mama and Daddy try to ensure that their girls grow up to be respectful young ladies by trying to enforce unorthodox rules. Perseverance, determination and hard work are evident as the family’s journey unfolds and the fate of Daddy, Mama and the nine girls is revealed.

A serial killer is kidnapping young women. Have they saved his 9th victim from danger? As Detectives Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska stand over the brutally disfigured remains of an adolescent girl in the early hours of New Year's Day, they suspect they've stumbled across the ninth victim of the notorious Doc Holiday. Until Liska discovers that one of her son's friends - Gray - is missing... And it seems that everyone who knew Gray is telling lies. Liska and Kovac are in a race against time to discover whether this is indeed the ninth girl, or an entirely different nightmare altogether... New York Times bestseller Tami Hoag takes the reader behind the picket fences of small-town America, she finds the most gruesome killers and twisted predators. Watch out for the next book in the Kovac and Liska crime thriller series THE BITTER SEASON A middle-aged couple - hacked to death in their own home - with a samurai sword. Normal people. Who were they? And why were they targeted? Twenty years ago a policeman was murdered in his own back garden and the killer was never caught. One woman might link these mysteries. But she is being watched. Can Detectives Nikki Liska and Sam Kovac find her before it is too late? THE BITTER SEASON is the next gripping thriller in the series.

Book excerpt: This volume examines how oral and written language function in school learning , and how oral texts can be successfully inter-connected to the written texts that are used on a daily basis in schools. Rather than argue for the prominence of one over the other, the goal is to help the reader gain a rich understanding of how both might work together to create a new discourse that ultimately creates new knowledge. Talking Texts: Provides historical background for the study of talk and text Presents examples of children’s and adolescents’ natural conversations as analyzed by linguists Addresses talk as it interfaces with domains of knowledge taught in schools to show how talk is related to and may be influenced by the structure, language, and activities of a specific discipline. Bringing together seminal lines of research to create a cohesive picture of discourse issues germane to classrooms and other learning settings, this volume is an essential resource for researchers, graduate students, classroom teachers, and curriculum specialists across the fields of discourse studies, literacy and English education, composition studies, language development, sociolinguistics, and applied linguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983, The Feral Classroom argues that the experience of schooling needs to be understood in terms of peer interaction in the classroom. Students’ interaction mediates the significance of the curriculum and teacher, and is, in its own right, a major agent of socialisation. The study reported in the book was conducted in an Australian state high school. It employs ethnographic techniques focused on students’ accounts of relations and activities with classmates. Concepts embodied in these accounts are interpreted through models of school and peer group as agents of socialisation. The volume fills several gaps. It is the first book to describe at length students’ accounts of classroom interaction; to give equal weight to boys’ and girls’ accounts; and to describe dominant students’ determination of the use of classroom norms and of the definition of performances. This book will appeal to a wide range of readers including, but not limited to, teachers, educational administrators, and sociologists.
