Book excerpt: An innovative anthology showcasing Asian American and Pacific Islander women’s histories Our Voices, Our Histories brings together thirty-five Asian American and Pacific Islander authors in a single volume to explore the historical experiences, perspectives, and actions of Asian American and Pacific Islander women in the United States and beyond. This volume is unique in exploring Asian American and Pacific Islander women’s lives along local, transnational, and global dimensions. The contributions present new research on diverse aspects of Asian American and Pacific Islander women’s history, from the politics of language, to the role of food, to experiences as adoptees, mixed race, and second generation, while acknowledging shared experiences as women of color in the United States. Our Voices, Our Histories showcases how new approaches in US history, Asian American and Pacific Islander studies, and Women’s and Gender studies inform research on Asian American and Pacific Islander women. Attending to the collective voices of the women themselves, the volume seeks to transform current understandings of Asian American and Pacific Islander women’s histories.

Book excerpt: The eleven members of the Bradley family are clannishly close and solidly unified. At least they are until the oldest son, Thomas, breathes the name of Texas. When the family, in 1822, leaves the mountains of Kentucky for the wildness of what is northern Mexico, the matriarch, Elizabeth, climbs aboard the wagon nurturing a seething anger toward her son and her husband, Edward. In stonefaced silence, she feeds her bitterness mile after plodding mile. It takes her sister-in-law, Polly Boone Bradley, to make Elizabeth appreciate what she has rather than grieve for what she is losing. In time, as she sees her nine children thrive, Elizabeth comes to accept the raw new country, but it will be tragedy that finally gives her the heart of a Texan. When Letty, the headstrong seventh Bradley child, falls in love with her brother's partner, Brax Hall, and marries him, it seems a perfect union. And so it is in spite of Brax's older brother, Warren. Rich, educated and politically influential, Warren is also narcissistically self-absorbed. He allows nothing, nor anyone, to stand in the way of what he wants. A chain of events, triggered by Warren, forces Letty to leave her beloved family, and Texas, in order to protect her son. For seven years, she must call the Louisiana bayou country home, but, just as trouble forced her out of Texas, trouble gives her no choice but to return. Her fear begins as soon as she crosses the Sabine River, and it grows with each mile the wagon bumps east along the La Bahia Road.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rugged character and indomitable spirit of the early pioneers of Stephen F. Austins Texas colony had their roots in a turbulent, distant past. From the early 1600s, their courageous ancestors had pushed westward, leaving the European shores to carve out a new nation from the wilderness. They fled religious and political oppression in search of a better life in which freedom was of supreme importance. Many came with tales of their former struggles in Londonderry, Ireland during the great siege, of terrible massacres and clan rivalries in the times of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. They vividly remembered the tribulations of Martin Luther and the deadly religious split with the Catholic Church. More recently, memories of their parents participation in the American Revolution, of dramatic, true life scenes such as depicted in the movie The Patriot filled their minds, their fathers having ridden along side of the wily Swamp Fox, Francis Marion. These pioneers associated themselves with men like Travis, Crockett, Houston and Andrew Jackson. Many of these early trailblazers were Scots-Irish and German immigrants. They were on a westward trek to grasp a special prize, to seal Americas Manifest Destiny. And that prize they sought was Texas. From Jamestown to Texas is the story of these intrepid pioneers and their ancestors who cleared and farmed the land, who fought the Indians, battled the elements, and carved out this wonderful country that we have today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flora von Roeder is one of thousands of direct descendants of a family in a Germanic entity in Europe called Anhalt. The family can theoretically be traced back to 1218 and is documented back to 1390. Those are spans of 795 and 613 years, respectively. Her intent here is to show how the main branch of this family emigrated from the European continent to the North American continent and to show its ability to establish roots and grow and multiply in an entirely different lifestyle under primitive circumstances into a clan that stretches today into many U.S. States, Canada, Mexico, back into European France and Germany, and to Hong Kong, and Australia. Between 1834 and today, there are as many as eight or nine generations of this family, most of whom were born in the U.S. Many do not carry the original surname, and many who do have changed it. Because the English alphabet does not carry the umlaut, an "e" was inserted after the "o" to make the spelling more accurate, and that made the pronunciation more confusing. Today we have "von Roeders," "von Raders," "von Raeders, and many have just dropped the "von" altogether, so we have just "Roeders." And, of course, there were the name changes through marriage; i.e., Engelking, Kleberg, Eckhardt, Binz, Wundt, Flato, Van Hutton, Regenbrecht, etc. Nevertheless, all can still be traced back to those knights called Koppen (Jacob) and Hans Roder or von Roder in a feudal letter awarding them noble lands at Harzgerode, Anhalt, in 1390.
