Book Synopsis Nils Astrup's 1889 Trek Translated by : Frederick Hale
Download or read book Nils Astrup's 1889 Trek Translated written by Frederick Hale and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-26 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the long-awaited, English translation and edition of Nils Astrup’s account of his 1889 trek from the British colony of Natal through Zululand and Swaziland to Portuguese East Africa. Based on a diary which Astrup kept while travelling, his book was published in Norwegian as En Missionsreise til Limpopo gjennem Zululand, Swaziland og Tongaland ind i Riget Umgaza in 1891. This three-month excursion was undertaken to explore possibilities for expanding the geographical scope of Norwegian Lutheran missionary endeavours among the various Nguni-speaking peoples of south-eastern Africa. The excursion took place at a critical historical juncture when the British Empire, Portuguese East Africa, and the South African Republic were vying for economic influence in a rapidly changing region of Africa. The erudite Astrup recorded his observations about a broad spectrum of topics, among them the impact of colonialism on indigenous Africans, tensions between colonising powers, itinerant Indian traders, African migratory labour, the extension of railways, and interracial marriage.

Book Synopsis Egalitarianism in Scandinavia by : Synnøve Bendixsen
Download or read book Egalitarianism in Scandinavia written by Synnøve Bendixsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses egalitarianism in Scandinavian countries through historically oriented and empirically based studies on social and political change. The chapters engage with issues related to social class, political conflict, the emergence of the welfare state, public policy, and conceptualizations of equality. Throughout, the contributors discuss and sometimes challenge existing notions of the social and cultural complexity of Scandinavia. For example, how does egalitarianism in these nations differ from other contemporary manifestations of egalitarianism? Is it meaningful to continue to nurture the idea of Scandinavian exceptionalism in an age of economic crises and globalization? The book also proposes that egalitarianism is not merely a relationship between specific, influential enlightenment ideas and patterns of policy, but an aspect of social organization characterized by specific forms of political tension, mobilization, and conflict resolution-as well as emerging cultural values such as individual autonomy.

Book Synopsis Norwegian Shipping in the 20th Century by : Stig Tenold
Download or read book Norwegian Shipping in the 20th Century written by Stig Tenold and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY NC ND 4.0 license. This open access book discusses how Norwegian shipping companies played a crucial role in global shipping markets in the 20th century, at times transporting more than ten per cent of world seaborne trade. Chapters explore how Norway managed to remain competitive, despite being a high labour-cost country in an industry with global competition. Among the features that are emphasised are market developments, business strategies and political decisions The Norwegian experience was shaped by the main breaking points in 20th century world history, such as the two world wars, and by long-term trends, such as globalization and liberalization. The shipping companies introduced technological and organizational innovations to build or maintain a competitive advantage in a rapidly changing world. The growing importance of offshore petroleum exploration in the North Sea from the 1970s was both a threat and an opportunity to the shipping companies. By adapting both business strategies and the political regime to the new circumstances, the Norwegian shipping sector managed to maintain a leading position internationally.
