This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents Nils Petter Gleditsch, a staff member of the Peace Research Institute of Oslo (PRIO) since 1964, a former editor of the Journal for Peace Research (1983-2010), a former president of the International Studies Association (2008-2009) and the recipient of several academic awards as a pioneer in the scientific analysis of war and peace. This unique anthology covers major themes in his distinguished career as a peace researcher. An autobiographical, critical retrospective puts his work on conflict and peace into a broader context, while a comprehensive bibliography documents his publications over a period of nearly 50 years. Part II documents his wide-ranging contributions on globalization, democratization and liberal peace, on international espionage, environmental security, climate change and conflict and on the decline of war and more generally of violence as a tool in conflict.

Book Synopsis History of Participatory Media by : Anders Ekström
Download or read book History of Participatory Media written by Anders Ekström and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for a historical perspective on issues relating to the notion of participatory media. Working from a broad concept of media – including essays on the 19th century press, early sound media, photography, exhibitions, television and the internet – the book offers a broad empirical approach to different modes of audience participation from the mid 19th century to the present. Using the insights from the historical case studies, the book also explores some of the key concepts in discussions on the politics of participation, arguing for a theoretical perspective sensitive to the asymmetries that characterize the distribution of agency in the relationship between media and users. Scholarly discussions on participatory media now occur in several fields. This book argues that all of these discussions are all too often obscured by a rhetoric of newness, assuming that participatory media is something unique in history, radical and revolutionary. By challenging the historiography implicit in this rhetoric, the book also engages in a discussion of issues of more general relevance to the multidisciplinary field of media history.

Book Synopsis An International Annotated Bibliography of Strindberg Studies 1870-2005: General studies by : Michael Robinson
Download or read book An International Annotated Bibliography of Strindberg Studies 1870-2005: General studies written by Michael Robinson and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This copiously annotated bibliography documents and examines the whole range of commentary on Strindberg's works and activity in many fields besides the plays for which he is internationally best known. These include his prose fiction and poetry, his work as an historian and natural historian, and his relationship to the other arts, most notably his painting. It is concerned with both lasting works of literary and dramatic criticism, as well as reviews of his books and plays in the theatre, and some more ephemeral material, all of this in several languages. Organised generically and by subject and individual work, the bibliography enables the reader to trace the changing impact of Strindberg and his works in various countries and during different periods. It is thus very much a study in reception as well as a bibliographical record of published material. It traces the developing image of Strindberg and his writing both during his lifetime and in subsequent years, and with frequent cross reference offers a comprehensive overview of a literary and existential project that has rarely been matched for its multifaceted diversity. The bibliography is published in three parts. Volume 2, The Plays (978-0-947623-82-1) and Volume 3, Prose, Poetry, Miscellaneous (978-0-947623-83-8) are also now available. Michael Robinson is Emeritus Professor of Drama and Scandinavian Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich.

Book Synopsis A Sociology of Crime by : Stephen Hester
Download or read book A Sociology of Crime written by Stephen Hester and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Sociology of Crime has an outstanding reputation for its distinctive and systematic contribution to the criminological literature. Through detailed examples and analysis, it shows how crime is a product of processes of criminalisation constituted through the interactional and organizational use of language. In this welcome second edition, the book reviews and evaluates the current state of criminological theory from this "grammatical" perspective. It maintains and develops its critical and subversive stance but greatly widens its theoretical range, including dedicated chapters on gender, race, class and the post-als including postcolonialism. It now also provides questions, exercises and further readings alongside its detailed analysis of a set of international examples, both classical and contemporary.
Book Synopsis Grievance Formation, Rights and Remedies by : Daniela Alaattinoğlu
Download or read book Grievance Formation, Rights and Remedies written by Daniela Alaattinoğlu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last century, the treatment of victims of involuntary sterilisation and castration in Nordic countries has varied drastically from state-to-state, across time and victim groups. Considering why this is the case, Daniela Alaattinoğlu investigates how laws and practices of involuntary, surgical sterilisation and castration have been established, abolished and remedied in three Nordic states: Sweden, Norway and Finland. Employing a vast range of primary and secondary sources, Alaattinoğlu traces the national and international developments of the last 100 years. Developing the concept of grievance formation, the book explores why some states have claimed public responsibility while others have not, and why some victim groups have mobilised while others have remained silent. Through this pioneering analysis, Alaattinoğlu illuminates issues of human and constitutional rights, the evolution of the welfare state and state responsibility in both a national and global context.
