Book Synopsis The Cross and the River by : Ḥagai Erlikh
Download or read book The Cross and the River written by Ḥagai Erlikh and published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing Egyptian-Ethiopian dispute over the Nile waters is potentially one of the most difficult issues on the current international agenda, central to the very life of the two countries. Analyzing the context of the dispute across a span of more than a thousand years, The Cross and the River delves into the heart of both countries' identities and cultures. Erlich deftly weaves together three themes: the political relationship between successive Ethiopian and Egyptian regimes; the complex connection between the Christian churches in the two countries; and the influence of the Nile river system on Ethiopian and Egyptian definitions of national identity and mutual perceptions of the Other. Drawing on a vast range of sources, his study is key to an understanding of a bond built on both interdependence and conflict.
Download or read book The Black Nile written by Dan Morrison and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-07-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A supremely entertaining work, and also an important one." -David Grann, author of The Lost City of Z Upon hearing the news of tenuous peace in Sudan, foreign correspondent Dan Morrison bought a plank-board boat, summoned a friend who'd never left America, and set out from Uganda, paddling the Nile on a quest to reach Cairo-a trip that tyranny and war had made impossible for decades. With the propulsive force of a thriller, Morrison's chronicle is a mash-up of travel narrative and reportage, packed with flights into the frightful and absurd. From the hardscrabble fishing villages on Lake Victoria to the floating nightclubs of Cairo, The Black Nile tracks the snarl of commonalities and conflicts that bleed across the Nile valley, bringing to life a complex region in profound transition.

Book Synopsis Modernism on the Nile by : Alex Dika Seggerman
Download or read book Modernism on the Nile written by Alex Dika Seggerman and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the modernist art movement that arose in Cairo and Alexandria from the late nineteenth century through the 1960s, Alex Dika Seggerman reveals how the visual arts were part of a multifaceted transnational modernism. While the work of diverse, major Egyptian artists during this era may have appeared to be secular, she argues, it reflected the subtle but essential inflection of Islam, as a faith, history, and lived experience, in the overarching development of Middle Eastern modernity. Challenging typical views of modernism in art history as solely Euro-American, and expanding the conventional periodization of Islamic art history, Seggerman theorizes a "constellational modernism" for the emerging field of global modernism. Rather than seeing modernism in a generalized, hyperconnected network, she finds that art and artists circulated in distinct constellations that encompassed finite local and transnational relations. Such constellations, which could engage visual systems both along and beyond the Nile, from Los Angeles to Delhi, were materialized in visual culture that ranged from oil paintings and sculpture to photography and prints. Based on extensive research in Egypt, Europe, and the United States, this richly illustrated book poses a compelling argument for the importance of Muslim networks to global modernism.
Download or read book Walking the Nile written by Levison Wood and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explorer and author of Walking the Americas and Walking the Himalayas delivers “a bold travelogue, illuminating great swathes of modern Africa” (Kirkus Reviews). Starting in November 2013 in a forest in Rwanda—where a modest spring spouts a trickle of clear, cold water—writer, photographer, and explorer Levison Wood set forth on foot, aiming to become the first person to walk the entire length of the fabled river. He followed the Nile for nine months, over 4,000 miles, through six nations—Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, the Republic of Sudan, and Egypt—to the Mediterranean coast. Like his predecessors, Wood camped in the wild, foraged for food, and trudged through rainforest, swamp, savannah, and desert, enduring life-threatening conditions at every turn. He traversed sandstorms, flash floods, minefields, and more, becoming a local celebrity in Uganda, where a popular rap song was written about him, and a potential enemy of the state in South Sudan, where he found himself caught in a civil war and detained by the secret police. As well as recounting his triumphs, like escaping a charging hippo and staving off wild crocodiles, Wood’s gripping account recalls the loss of Matthew Power, a journalist who died suddenly from heat exhaustion during their trek. As Wood walks on, often joined by local guides who help him to navigate foreign languages and customs, Walking the Nile maps out African history and contemporary life. “Woods emerges as a dutiful and brave guide.”—Los Angeles Times “Many have attempted this holy grail of an expedition—so I admire Lev’s determination and courage to pull this off.”—Bear Grylls “A brilliant book.”—Financial Times

Book Synopsis Introduction to Statistical Physics, Second Edition by : Kerson Huang
Download or read book Introduction to Statistical Physics, Second Edition written by Kerson Huang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2009-09-21 with total page 1102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a world-renowned theoretical physicist, Introduction to Statistical Physics, Second Edition clarifies the properties of matter collectively in terms of the physical laws governing atomic motion. This second edition expands upon the original to include many additional exercises and more pedagogically oriented discussions that fully explain the concepts and applications. The book first covers the classical ensembles of statistical mechanics and stochastic processes, including Brownian motion, probability theory, and the Fokker–Planck and Langevin equations. To illustrate the use of statistical methods beyond the theory of matter, the author discusses entropy in information theory, Brownian motion in the stock market, and the Monte Carlo method in computer simulations. The next several chapters emphasize the difference between quantum mechanics and classical mechanics—the quantum phase. Applications covered include Fermi statistics and semiconductors and Bose statistics and Bose–Einstein condensation. The book concludes with advanced topics, focusing on the Ginsburg–Landau theory of the order parameter and the special kind of quantum order found in superfluidity and superconductivity. Assuming some background knowledge of classical and quantum physics, this textbook thoroughly familiarizes advanced undergraduate students with the different aspects of statistical physics. This updated edition continues to provide the tools needed to understand and work with random processes.

Book Synopsis Crossing the Suez Canal by : Samy Ibrahim
Download or read book Crossing the Suez Canal written by Samy Ibrahim and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “ Book Endorsement” To write about this book brings me honor and joy. For these recollections clearly show the greatness, ability, love, and protection of the Lord. To Him be the glory. It also shows the greatness of what Engineer Samy Hanna Ibrahim did in the October 1973 war. After he himself ascended it, he penetrated the high earth wall and crossed the Egyptian forces assigned to his crossing access from the west of the Suez Canal to the eastern shore. Thus, he contributed to the victory of a war, which returned Sinai to Egypt. That return changed Egypt for the better after its setback in June 1967. Dr. Mufeed Ibrahim Said, retired professor of surgery and former chair of the department of surgery, at Cairo University, Arab Republic of Egypt I am pleased to present to the reader this book whose author aims with every story, in every situation, and at every memory to testify about God's continuous work, steadfast support, and God's ever-flowing grace. The book recounts the life story of an ordinary person who placed himself, his being, and the details of his life in the hands of God. We go on a journey with the writer, in which he takes us to the different stations of his life, especially the period he spent as an officer in the Egyptian Armed Forces during the glorious October War in 1973. --Dr. Rev. Youssef Samir Senior Pastor of the Evangelical Church in Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt
