Bessonov painted wonderful, romantic paintings of Roma (Gypsies). Roma in art is a different story altogether, a subject we hope to take up later. Another line of his paintings was for a book about Medieval witch persecution, with gruesome pictures of mostly beautiful women coming into trouble. The authors came into contact with Bessonov in connection with an exhibition of Roma Art and Culture. in 1997 in Denmark. Please accept this little booklet for what it is and with all its limitations. We have long wanted to do it for obvious reasons as Bessonov was very talented artist and a great friend of Roma. The booklet is produced from the images we got from him in curating the exhibition. We have some more images in a box somewhere in storage, so this booklet may see a second edition.

Le livret est réalisé à partir des images que nous avons obtenues de lui lors du commissariat de l'exposition. Nous avons quelques images supplémentaires dans une boîte quelque part dans le stockage, ce livret pourrait donc connaître une deuxième édition.

Bogdanov-Belsky was born in the village of Shitiki in Smolensk Governorate in 1868. He studied art at the Semyon Rachinsky fine art school, icon-painting at the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra in 1883, modern painting at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1884 to 1889, and at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg from 1894 to 1895. He worked and studied in private studios in Paris in the late 1890s.Bogdanov-Belsky was active in St. Petersburg. After 1921, he worked exclusively in Riga, Latvia. He became a member of several prominent societies in including the Peredvizhniki from 1895, and the Arkhip Kuindzhi Society from 1909. He was a founding member of the group of Peredvizhniki and chairman from 1913 to 1918.Bogdanov-Belsky painted mostly genre paintings, especially of the education of peasant children, portraits, and impressionistic landscapes studies. He became pedagogue and academician in 1903. He was an active Member of the Academy of Arts in 1914. Since 1921, Bogdanov-Belsky lived in Riga and was a member of the Russian Fraternitas Arctica in Riga.

Book excerpt: Jekatyerina Dunajeva explores how two dominant stereotypes—“bad Gypsies” and “good Roma”—took hold in formal and informal educational institutions in Russia and Hungary. She shows that over centuries “Gypsies” came to be associated with criminality, lack of education, and backwardness. The second notion, of proud, empowered, and educated “Roma,” is a more recent development. By identifying five historical phases—pre-modern, early-modern, early and “ripe” communism, and neomodern nation-building—the book captures crucial legacies that deepen social divisions and normalize the constructed group images. The analysis of the state-managed Roma identity project in the brief korenizatsija program for the integration of non-Russian nationalities into the Soviet civil service in the 1920s is particularly revealing, while the critique of contemporary endeavors is a valuable resource for policy makers and civic activists alike. The top-down view is complemented with the bottom-up attention to everyday Roma voices. Personal stories reveal how identities operate in daily life, as Dunajeva brings out hidden narratives and subaltern discourse. Book excerpt: The Scenic Places of the Tokaido (Tokaido Meisho no Uchi) by 17 artists is based on the list of prints on the Kunisada Project website run by Dr Horst Graebner with a total of 162 ukiyo-e prints. It is a fantastic work, an effort presumably directed by the shogun ́s political office to commemorate his attempt to preserve a joint rulership with the emperor over Japan. It differs from the many other Tokaido series by the large number of prints, at least three times as many in a series. If differs by the number of people in the prints - the procession consisted of 3,000 people. It also marks the end of the ukiyo-e Tokaido, where the forced travel of the daimyo - sankin-kotai - had contributed so much to the economic and cultural development along these roads and indeed to the whole print making industry. The shogun abolished sankin-kotai in 1862.
