Book Synopsis Shakespeare and Beckett by : Claudia Olk
Download or read book Shakespeare and Beckett written by Claudia Olk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The danger is in the neatness of identifications', Samuel Beckett famously stated, and, at first glance, no two authors could be further distant from one another than William Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett. This book addresses the vast intertextual network between the works of both writers and explores the resonant correspondences between them. It analyses where and how these resonances manifest themselves in their aesthetics, theatre, language and form. It traces convergences and inversions across both œuvres that resound beyond their conditions of production and possibility. Uncovering hitherto unexplored relations between the texts of an early modern and a late modern author, this study seeks to offer fresh readings of single passages and entire works, but it will also describe productive tensions and creative incongruences between them.

The next section, “Keats’s Reading,” consists of six essays that examine Keats’s work in relation to specific earlier authors and texts. The four essays in the third section, “Reading Keats,” consider how Keats’s poetry influenced the work of later writers and became embedded in British and American literary traditions. Book excerpt: Poetry. Through branching clauses of off-kilter syntax, Graham Foust makes poetry in NIGHTINGALELESSNESS from the common stuff of conversations, including the ones bouncing around in our heads. "If you think you've seen it all you've seen one thing." By observation and direct address, these poems surge forward as a way to retreat and reflect. They concern what Keats calls "the weariness, the fever, and the fret" of adulthood, the weight of time, when the music has stopped. Yet in the syncopation of action against uncertainty, thought against belief, Foust uncovers a wobbly new music.

Book Synopsis Suite for Barbara Loden by : Nathalie Léger
Download or read book Suite for Barbara Loden written by Nathalie Léger and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second in Nathalie Léger’s acclaimed genre-defying triptych of books about the struggles and obsessions of women artists. “I believe there is a miracle in Wanda,” wrote Marguerite Duras of the only film American actress Barbara Loden ever wrote and directed. “Usually, there is a distance between representation and text, subject and action. Here that distance is completely eradicated.” It is perhaps this “miracle”—the seeming collapse of fiction and fact—that has made Wanda (1970) a cult classic, and a fascination of artists from Isabelle Huppert to Rachel Kushner to Kate Zambreno. For acclaimed French writer Nathalie Léger, the mysteries of Wanda launched an obsessive quest across continents, into archives, and through mining towns of Pennsylvania, all to get closer to the film and its maker. Suite for Barbara Loden is the magnificent result.
Download or read book Embarrassments written by Graham Foust and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. For more than two decades Graham Foust has been sounding out the limits of common expression through precise lyricism, a tragicomic, almost slapstick absurdism, and syncopated guesses about what things might mean. EMBARRASSMENTS offers a synthesis of that work. Running through the concerns of parenthood, climate change, and our inevitable insignificance is Foust's total commitment to excavating the strangeness of language and our entanglement with the words we share. "Like Stevens, Foust writes intricate poems that explore a world from which meaning has departed; the poet seeks to restore it, however tentatively, through the powers of artifice."--Ben Lerner

Book excerpt: Poetry. Graham Foust has written a gorgeously subversive field guide to the inner life, the poet's life--an anthem, if you will, to a borderless country, unbound from assumption. Brace yourself for the shock of recognition.--Dawn Raffel On A Mouth in California: Since so much of Foust's work is a declaration of what he likes, embraces, and wants to incorporate into his corpus--that is, his body--these poems instruct the reader to become what you like so you can like what you are. And they mark Foust as one of the best erotic poets writing now.--Ange Mlinko in The Nation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A blend of literary criticism and memoir, Jennifer Moxley's For the Good of All, Do Not Destroy the Birds recounts a life spent in the company of birds and poems, intimately attuned to the mysteries of singing. These essays trace the poet's calling to sources in birdsong and sacrifice, asking, "Must a woman be sentenced to endless night for a poet to be born?" From the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to the death of the poet's mother, Moxley explores the losses that underlie poetry, and in turn, poetry's use as a measure for living. "For the Good of All, Do Not Destroy the Birds opens a magical place of clean-lined prose, scholarly knowledge, and inspiration. The writing is deep and lucid, it cuts to the bone and yet respects the mystery of things. It works by a literary transfiguration. The poet shines with bright rays of thought and skill as she stands on a mount of experience created by the songs of poets and birds-from Sappho and Ovid to Robert Duncan and Anne Carson, from nightingales to lyrebirds-until they appear next to her and converse with her as she writes."
