Book Synopsis Astronomical Discoveries You Can Make, Too! by : Robert K. Buchheim
Download or read book Astronomical Discoveries You Can Make, Too! written by Robert K. Buchheim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You too can follow in the steps of the great astronomers such as Hipparchus, Galileo, Kepler and Hubble, who all contributed so much to our modern understanding of the cosmos. This book gives the student or amateur astronomer the following tools to replicate some of these seminal observations from their own homes: With your own eyes: Use your own observations and measurements to discover and confirm the phenomena of the seasons, the analemma and the equation of time, the logic behind celestial coordinates, and even the precession of the equinoxes. With a consumer-grade digital camera: Record the changing brightness of an eclipsing binary star and show that a pulsating star changes color as it brightens and dims. Add an inexpensive diffraction grating to your camera and see the variety of spectral features in the stars, and demonstrate that the Sun’s spectrum is similar to one particular type of stellar spectrum. With a backyard telescope: Add a CCD imager and you can measure the scale of the Solar System and the distance to a nearby star. You could even measure the distance to another galaxy and observe the cosmological redshift of the expanding universe. Astronomical Discoveries You Can Make, Too! doesn’t just tell you about the development of astronomy; it shows you how to discover for yourself the essential features of the universe.
Book Synopsis Five Millennium Catalog of Solar Eclipses: -1999 to +3000 by : Fred Espenak
Download or read book Five Millennium Catalog of Solar Eclipses: -1999 to +3000 written by Fred Espenak and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 5,000-year period from -1999 to +3000 (2000 BCE to 3000 CE), Earth will experience 11,898 eclipses of the Sun. The eclipses are distributed as follows: 4200 partial eclipses, 3956 annular eclipses, 3173 total eclipses, and 569 hybrid eclipses. The "Five Millennium Catalog of Solar Eclipses: -1999 to +3000" contains a catalog listing the date, eclipse type, and principal characteristics of every eclipse during this period. Tabulated data for each eclipse includes the catalog number, canon plate number, calendar date, Terrestrial Dynamical Time of greatest eclipse, ?T, lunation number, Saros number, eclipse type, Quincena Lunar Eclipse parameter, gamma, eclipse magnitude, geographic coordinates of greatest eclipse (latitude and longitude), and the circumstances at greatest eclipse (i.e., Sun altitude and azimuth, path width, and central line duration). The statistics of the solar eclipse distribution over 5,000 years are investigated in detail. This includes eclipse types by month and by century, eclipse frequency in the calendar year, extremes in eclipse magnitude for all eclipse types, maximum durations of total, annular, and hybrid eclipses, and eclipse duos (two eclipses within 30 days of each other).A discussion of the major cycles in the Moon's orbit and their role in the occurrence of solar eclipses is presented. These include the synodic, the anomalistic, and the draconic months. Finally, the periodicity of solar eclipses is investigated with particular attention to the Saros cycle. Tables list the start and end dates, number, and type of eclipses of every Saros series in progress during the 5,000-year period covered by the Five Millennium Canon. The Catalog serves as a supplement to the "Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses" which contains a map of every eclipse. The Canon and the Catalog both use the same solar and lunar ephemerides as well as the same value of ?T. This 1-to-1 correspondence between them enhances the value of each. The researcher may now search, evaluate, and compare eclipses graphically (Canon) or textually (Catalog).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How you can forecast the weather by the moon. Weather forecasting by the moon has been practised for thousands of years and almanacs were once a common feature of rural life, foretelling storms, floods, and droughts. Ken Ring's mathematical theory that revives the old idea about the moon influencing the weather has provoked a great deal of public interest and debate, and The Lunar Code explains the science behind Ken's work — the mathematics, ancient divination techniques and recently discovered data from space research. This book tells how you, too, can forecast weather by the moon: * Discover how to interpret the coming weather from the moon’s size, shape and appearance. * Predict for yourself weather-related disasters arriving in your region. * Enjoy moon-gazing, as humans have done since the beginning of time, but with a fresh perspective.

Book Synopsis The Value of the Moon by : Paul D. Spudis
Download or read book The Value of the Moon written by Paul D. Spudis and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Moon was once thought to hold the key to space exploration, in recent decades, the U.S. has largely turned its sights toward Mars and other celestial bodies instead. In The Value of the Moon, lunar scientist Paul Spudis argues that the U.S. can and should return to the moon in order to remain a world leader in space utilization and development and a participant in and beneficiary of a new lunar economy. Spudis explores three reasons for returning to the Moon: it is close, it is interesting, and it is useful. The proximity of the Moon not only allows for frequent launches, but also control of any machinery we place there. It is interesting because recorded deep on its surface and in its craters is the preserved history of the moon, the sun, and indeed the entire galaxy. And finally, the moon is useful because it is rich with materials and energy. The moon, Spudis argues, is a logical base for further space exploration and even a possible future home for us all. Throughout his work, Spudis incorporates details about man's fascination with the moon and its place in our shared history. He also explores its religious, cultural, and scientific resonance and assesses its role in the future of spaceflight and our national security and prosperity.

Book Synopsis Sketching the Moon by : Richard Handy
Download or read book Sketching the Moon written by Richard Handy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For anyone artistically inclined, observing the Moon and attempting to sketch or paint it can easily become a passion. The Moon presents a broad array of tone, texture, and form. Capturing this in a painting or sketch at the eyepiece of a telescope – or even with binoculars – develops observational skills, leaves a record of the observation, and can also be a delightful and rewarding pastime. However, the choice of media available is extensive (acrylic paint, oils, pen, charcoal, etc., and even computer art programs), and there is no existing text that fully explains all lunar sketching and painting techniques in each respective medium. This beautiful and graphically rich book fulfills this requirement. It presents detailed step-by-step instructions, in the form of illustrated tutorials for every major medium employed to represent the Moon. It also provides practical advice on how to sketch outdoors at night (not ideal conditions for an artist!). This is easily the most extensive book on the subject of lunar art for amateur astronomers, particularly those observing through a telescope. The diverse features of the lunar surface will attract and entice readers to review the number of different media presented, exciting and inspiring them with the possibilities of learning to depict all of the fascinating aspects of Earth's very own satellite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take an enchanting journey through the shifting seasons in a wildlife sanctuary home to wetland, forest, and grassland and supporting an incredible diversity of plants and animals. Flocks of waterfowl exploding into steely skies above frozen marshland, salamanders creeping across the forest floor to vernal pools, chorusing frogs peeping their ecstasy while warblers crowd budding trees, turtles sunning on floating logs, the ecological engineering of beavers—these are but a few of the sights and sounds marking a year at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary and its neighboring landscapes in Southern Maryland. In an absorbing account of a year in the life of this sanctuary, naturalist Colin Rees invites us to join him as he explores the secrets and wonders of the changing natural world. Alongside the author, we witness spring's avian migrations, quickening of aquatic vegetation, burgeoning of myriad invertebrates, and the assaults of extreme weather conditions. We revel in summertime's proliferation of fish, fowl, and mammals. We become attuned to the shifting climate's impacts on autumnal transitions, and we marvel at amazing feats of biological inventiveness in preparation for winter conditions. Through these visions of the fleeting—and yet enduring—cycles of nature, Rees shares deep insights into the ecological and behavioral dynamics of the natural environment. Enhanced by more than two dozen color plates, the book touches on a wide range of issues, from microbial diversity, bird banding, and butterfly phenology to genetic diversity and habitat fragmentation. It also examines the challenges of conserving these and other natural features in the face of climate change and development pressures. Thoughtful and lyrical, Nature's Calendar speaks to all readers, scientific and lay alike. Fascinating profiles of flora and fauna celebrate the richness and complexity of a unique ecosystem, exploring the entire ecology of this dynamic and delicate area.
