This book digs deep into Noah's journey, tracing his life back to his childhood in the Gert Town section of New Orleans where he dared to dream about a life beyond his low-income neighborhood. When he finally fulfilled his dream, the experience was bigger than he ever imagined. The NEXUS Days is an inside look at how Noah achieved success; the people who collaborated with him in business and the customers who made his businesses thrive. The book recalls the many celebrities who visited NEXUS and even shares the back-stories about the night Eddie Murphy came to NEXUS as well as the appearances by Stevie Wonder. Throughout its pages, the book recognizes that during its glory days, NEXUS was the social nucleus for Black professionals in New Orleans. It also weaves in a love story involving Noah and his wife, Karin Hopkins, who is the author of The NEXUS Days. She goes behind the scenes and reveals the raw truth about this iconic nightclub, how it flourished and why it ultimately failed. Before the last drink was poured, NEXUS sustained many years of popularity. This story has been waiting to be told. The NEXUS Days reveals stunning insights about aspects of the business that have never been publicly discussed. It also is a Master Class in business development, especially for anyone interested in starting a nightclub. And the book is a delightful stroll down memory lane for everyone who experienced NEXUS.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The award-winning book that inspired an Apple Original series from Apple TV+ • A landmark investigation of patient deaths at a New Orleans hospital ravaged by Hurricane Katrina—and the suspenseful portrayal of the quest for truth and justice—from a Pulitzer Prize–winning physician and reporter “An amazing tale, as inexorable as a Greek tragedy and as gripping as a whodunit.”—Dallas Morning News After Hurricane Katrina struck and power failed, amid rising floodwaters and heat, exhausted staff at Memorial Medical Center designated certain patients last for rescue. Months later, a doctor and two nurses were arrested and accused of injecting some of those patients with life-ending drugs. Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years of reporting by Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink, unspools the mystery, bringing us inside a hospital fighting for its life and into the most charged questions in health care: which patients should be prioritized, and can health care professionals ever be excused for hastening death? Transforming our understanding of human nature in crisis, Five Days at Memorial exposes the hidden dilemmas of end-of-life care and reveals how ill-prepared we are for large-scale disasters—and how we can do better. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Long before the Confederacy was crushed militarily, it was defeated economically," writes Charles L. Dufour. He contends that with the fall of the critical city of New Orleans in spring 1862 the South lost the Civil War, although fighting would continueøfor three more years. On the Mississippi River, below New Orleans, in the predawn of April 24, 1862, David Farragut with fourteen gunboats ran past two forts to capture the South's principal seaport. Vividly descriptive, The Night the War Was Lost is also very human in its portrayal of terrified citizens and leaders occasionally rising to heroism. In a swift-moving narrative, Dufour explains the reasons for the seizure of New Orleans and describes its results.

Book excerpt: The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.

Book excerpt: A Night In New Orleans, involves three families which are united by marriage. First there is the Baxter Family, A well-to-do African-American family with "old money" and political power. Judge Ansel Baxter is the patriarch of this family. He makes a most unethical deal with a very powerful and notoriously dangerous drug lord. The Valdensteins and Baxters were united by a forbidden marriage which ended in murder. As a result of this unfortunate situation, the two families are now inseparable. Catherine Valdenstein, a world- renowned socialite and fashion designer is the matriarch of the Valdenstein family, an unorthodox Jewish family which reigns supreme in the fashion, cosmetic and banking industries. The third family in this Southern saga is the Renoir family, a lower middle class family of devout Roman Catholics. The Renoirs ancestry is like one of the many definitions of Creole. This family is of French and African-American parentage, and many member of this very light complexioned family appear to be of pure European descent. However the Renoirs are legally classified as African- American. Judge Ansel Baxter's son, Alexander Baxter former NBA star, founder and president, CEO of a multimillion dollars advertising agency, is married to Dr. Elaine Renoir. Mary Evangeline Renoir, who is known to her family and friends as Cheeky Red, is the Black Sheep of the Renoir family. This drop-dead-gorgeous vixen is well-known for having many male companions and sometimes engaging in illegal scandals. This novel has captured the mystique and majesty of New Orleans. In fact this work of fiction is as hot and spicy as the cuisine of the many fine restaurants in the City of New Orleans, a city which flows with magical energy.

Book excerpt: "This book is rather like a Mardi Gras parade -- a series of impressions. Each chapter is like a decorated car which tells a story. Some of the stories are brave and courageous, others are informative, or amusing, or bizarre, or fantastic. or cruel; but they are all interlocking stories--a pageant of a city...I have not attempted to write history in its strict sense although the main events of the French, Spanish and American Dominations are outlined and several chapters on the new New Orleans have been added."-- from Introduction.
