Book Synopsis At the Crossroads Between Nutrition and Pharmacology by : Cristina Otero
Download or read book At the Crossroads Between Nutrition and Pharmacology written by Cristina Otero and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional foods (foods with known bioactive properties) have shown potential for preventive and therapeutic treatments. However, this potential must be safely determined before they enter the commercial market. At the same time, nutrition research is transforming into a data driven field with reference to the identification and development of functional food products due to the large number of variables affecting food biochemistry in the human body. This volume presents reviews of recent advances in food chemistry, food technology and nutraceutical research (for diet therapy and cosmetics). Chapters in this volume cover a broad spectrum of topics: - drug discovery and development in the modern nutraceutical industry, - recent developments in the extraction, identification and quantification of bioactive peptides in foods, - concepts of bioavailability, bioaccessibility, bioactivity, bioefficiency and bioconversion of bioactive foods, - synthetic routes for obtaining bioactive compounds, - the role of nutrigenomics to identify key cellular functions by specific genetic and epigenetic interactions with a nutrient, - anti-cancer properties of important bioactive components of medicinal plants, - the effect of a diet based on different bioactive foods on prevention and treatment of diabetes, - antioxidant effects on cardiovascular disease, - beneficial effects of bioactive foods on metabolic syndrome, - the potential of tauroursodeoxycholic acid on prevention and recovery of neurodegenerative diseases, - the effects of natural phytochemicals in prostate cancer, - the effects of methylxanthines (caffeine and others), and culinary methods on physiological and toxicological effects of the bioactive food constituents. The volume is an ideal reference for pharmacy students, nutritionists, healthcare providers and nutraceutical R&D specialists interested in functional foods. [Series Intro] Frontiers in Bioactive Compounds brings edited reviews on the analysis and characterization of natural compounds of medicinal interest. Each volume covers useful information on a variety of natural sources as well as analytical techniques. This series is essential reading for analytical and medicinal chemists as well as professionals involved in natural and pharmaceutical product research and development.

Book Synopsis Routledge International Handbook of Nurse Education by : Sue Dyson
Download or read book Routledge International Handbook of Nurse Education written by Sue Dyson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While vast numbers of nurses across the globe contribute in all areas of healthcare delivery from primary care to acute and long-term care in community settings, there are significant differences in how they are educated, as well as the precise nature of their practice. This comprehensive handbook provides a research-informed and international perspective on the critical issues in contemporary nurse education. As an applied discipline, nursing is implemented differently depending on the social, political and cultural climate in any given context. These factors impact on education, as much as on practice, and are reflected in debates around the value of accredited programmes, and on-the-job training, apprenticeship, undergraduate and postgraduate pathways into nursing. Engaging with these debates amongst others, the authors collected here discuss how, through careful design and delivery of nursing curricula, nurses can be prepared to understand complex care processes, complex healthcare technologies, complex patient needs and responses to therapeutic interventions, and complex organizations. The book discusses historical perspectives on how nurses should be educated; contemporary issues facing educators; teaching and learning strategies; the politics of nurse education; education for advanced nursing practice; global approaches; and educating for the future. Bringing together leading authorities from across the world to reflect on past, present and future approaches to nurse education and nursing pedagogy, this handbook provides a cutting-edge overview for all educators, researchers and policy-makers concerned with nurse education.

Book Synopsis Nigeria's Resource Wars by : Egodi Uchendu
Download or read book Nigeria's Resource Wars written by Egodi Uchendu and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Nigeria’s Resource Wars' reflects on the diversity of conflicts over access to, and allocation of, resources in Nigeria. From the devastating effects of crude oil exploration in the Niger Delta to desertification caused by climate change, and illegal gold mining in Zamfara, to mention a few, Nigeria faces new dimensions of resource-related struggles. The ravaging effects of these resource conflicts between crop farmers and Fulani herders in Nigeria’s Middlebelt and states across Southern Nigeria call for urgent scholarly interventions; with the Fulani cattle breeders’ onslaught altering the histories of many Nigerian families through deaths, loss of homes and investments, and permanent physical incapacity. Currently, there is an almost total breakdown of interethnic relations, with political commentators acknowledging that Nigeria has never been so divided as it presently is in its history. The struggles have now degenerated into kidnaps, armed robbery, and incessant targeted and random killings across the country; compounding the already complex problem of insecurity in Nigeria. The chapters in this volume engage with these issues, presenting the different arguments on resource conflicts in Nigeria. They draw insights from similar conflicts in Nigeria’s colonial/post-independence past and events from around the world to proffer possible solutions to resource-related confrontations in Africa. By offering a collection of different intellectual perspectives on resource conflicts in Nigeria, this volume will be an important reference material for understanding the diversity of thought patterns that underpin the struggle and policy approaches towards resolving conflict situations in Africa. This volume will be of considerable interest to scholars of Africa, researchers in the humanities, social sciences, and conflict studies, and policymakers interested in understanding the resource crisis in Africa.

Book Synopsis Challenges and Prospects in African Education Systems by : Soji Oni
Download or read book Challenges and Prospects in African Education Systems written by Soji Oni and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 971 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges and Prospects in African Education System: The general idea this book is trying to disseminate is to inform readers about the compelling challenges and prospects in African system of education. As we all know, when issues of Africa educational system is raised, the first set of thoughts that come to mind is decline in standard, deterioration of facilities, examination malpractices, cult crises or school-based violence, shortage of teachers, underqualified teachers, and poor teachers performance, which results in poor learning standards, lack of classroom discipline that is exacerbated by insufficient resources and inadequate infrastructure, failure of appropriate inspection and monitoring, and confusion caused by changing curricula without proper communication and training. All these have led to massive demoralization and disillusionment among teachers and a negative and worsening perception of African system of education. This, therefore, calls for in-depth analysis aimed at tutoring every stakeholder in education on how their action and inactions have individually and collectively contributed to the collapsing state of education in Africa. However, the prospect is that Africas recovery and sustainable development can only be guaranteed through expansion and sustenance of both quantitative and qualitativeof the continents stock of human capital through education. In order for education to realize its key role in development, it must be provided to the younger segments of African society as quickly as human and financial resources permit, with the ultimate goal of developing a comprehensive, meaningful and sustainable system of education at all levels and for all age groups. This is the message that this book puts across in the six knitted sections.
