Book excerpt: Be aware of the voice on the other end of the line that promises you riches beyond your dreams on the way to Shangri-La. The Nigerian Connection follows an Italian immigrant, named Enzo Segnan, as he gets caught up with some of the most conniving forgers and criminals in the world. The plot unfolds as Enzo is lured by a letter from the Nigerian Crime syndicate promising an easy 18-million dollars if he allows 50-million dollars to be transferred into his account. Enzo realizes this must be a scam and despite pleadings from the FBI, lets his curiosity get the best of him, and accepts the offer. His chase for the money promised to him, and for his kidnapped secretary (and lover), leads him on a whirlwind adventure. As he falls deeper into the Crime Syndicate''s trap, he is robbed of thousands of dollars, and travels all over Canada and Europe in search of his money and secretary. In the end, Enzo learns even the people close to you are capable of deception - in this case, that person is his secretary. Only, she too falls victim to the Crime Syndicate, and unlike Enzo, does not escape alive. In addition to this tale of adventure, there is a second story that takes shape, a love story. Just when it appears the novel will close with Enzo at his lowest point, he emerges at his highest - in love and married to a woman he meets, when he least expects it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His nineteenth-century cousin, paddled ashore by slaves, twisted the arms of tribal chiefs to sign away their territorial rights in the oil-rich Niger Delta. Sixty years later, his grandfather helped craft Nigeria's constitution and negotiate its independence, the first of its kind in Africa. Four decades later, Peter Cunliffe-Jones arrived as a journalist in the capital, Lagos, just as military rule ended, to face the country his family had a hand in shaping.Part family memoir, part history, My Nigeria is a piercing look at the colonial legacy of an emerging power in Africa. Marshalling his deep knowledge of the nation's economic, political, and historic forces, Cunliffe-Jones surveys its colonial past and explains why British rule led to collapse at independence. He also takes an unflinching look at the complicated country today, from email hoaxes and political corruption to the vast natural resources that make it one of the most powerful African nations; from life in Lagos's virtually unknown and exclusive neighborhoods to the violent conflicts between the numerous tribes that make up this populous African nation. As Nigeria celebrates five decades of independence, this is a timely and personal look at a captivating country that has yet to achieve its great potential.

Book excerpt: Karen Harris is about to take on one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal cartel’s in the world, in a covert mission to find her sister, Sophie. Her best friend, Sherry Malloy, sums up the risks: "Karen will be living as a working girl, hiding among them, under the gaze, not only of the authorities, but the cartel. Women, unlike men, are very good at that. They can change their looks, make themselves pathetic, not an obvious threat. Informers trading information for money, in some cases will also want Karen as part of the deal. She'll be demeaned, abused and maybe beaten. One tiny slip on her part, which shows she is not what she seems, then it's over and the cartel will take her. If she's lucky she'll be killed, but more likely put to work in conditions you can't imagine. You see; I've been there. It's terrifying, and you're so very alone." Russian Connection is the sequel to Nigerian Connection. While the book can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone story, you should first read Nigerian Connection.

While this attack occurred inside Nigerian borders, it was the first time Boko Haram had targeted an international, non-Nigerian entity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on previously classified government information and interviews with key officials and drug market insiders in Nigeria, this book is the first ever in-depth analysis of the international and domestic origins of illegal drug control in Africa, exploring the formulation and implementation of Nigerian drug policy between 1985 and 2010. During this period, the country came to be seen as a hub in the global drug trade and the domestic policy set in motion to tackle this perception escalated into Africa's most repressive and long-lasting anti-drug campaign. The book provocatively argues that Nigeria's drug war was not driven by an understanding of the country's drug problems but rather by political calculations made in Nigeria, the US and at the UN. 0Also part of series: History of International Relations Library; 30.
