Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective Leadership In Nigeria: Practical Ways To Build an Effective, Inspiring, Transformational and Visionary Leadership and Governance in Nigeria is mostly based on the current apathetic and virtual lack of effective and visionary leadership situation in contemporary Nigeria and distills the golden gems: - principles, processes, procedures and practical applications inherent in effective, inspiring, visionary and enthusiastic leadership. It attempts at instituting, building and encouraging good, effective, and visionary leadership in the nation and that is currently, virtually lacking. From the outset, the author makes it clear that this writing is not designed to model or fit any known leadership paradigm, theory or management style. Rather, based on relevant research on leadership as it impacts the Nigerian situation, the book attempts to explore what it takes for there to be an effective and good leadership to successfully lead and change Nigeria for the better. The book is written and organized in a way that reflects and captures the contemporary experiences, frustrations, psychological emotions, aspirations and hopes of every Nigerian and perhaps of promising politicians and future leaders who are honestly touched by the virtual vacuum of real and effective leadership in the country, their concerns, questions, dreams, and the expectations that have virtually gone unmet in the past more than half a century. Properly elucidating what leadership means, and differentiating it from rulership this book couldn't have come at a better time to assist Nigeria's leadership-struggles! A masterpiece, Dr. Nkwocha has taken the current apathetic leadership lull and almost leadership void in the nation and set the leadership principles and processes on the cutting edge. The book is a definitive guide to anyone aspiring to the leadership of Nigeria and is therefore in search of meaningful leadership, its principles, processes and pragmatic applications. The book is a must read!

The contributors examine the role and nature of traditional governance institutions in West Africa from pre-colonial times to the post-colonial era. Part I considers a range of traditional institutions including monarchies, Islamic institutions and the role of culture and arts such as masking and music in traditional leadership. Part II focuses on modern governance institutions, elites, political action, arts, and democracy in post-colonial Nigeria. Part III examines democratic institutions and processes in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, covering issues such as electoral reforms, women’s political participation, and democratic citizenship. Book excerpt: This book provides for the reader: - An excellent perspective on the early historical origins and political development of Nigeria. - Solutions to the leadership question Nigeria has been struggling with since independence. - It destroys the myth that leadership is Nigeria's only problem. - It points out the role of responsible followership in building a great nation. - It shows why democracy has not worked in Africa and what needs to be done for it to work. - It points out reasons why strong men (messiahs) cannot solve the problem of Nigeria and African nations. - It makes a case for building strong institutions and systems as the key to eradicating corruption and leadership failure. - It posits that wrong values are at the root of our national problems and challenges both for leaders and followers to imbibe good values. - It enjoins citizens not to abdicate the responsibility of their country to the leaders alone, but must themselves accept the responsibility for their nation. - It also shows examples of proactive Nigerians that are taking responsibility to build a better Nigeria. Book excerpt: Leadership and Governance is a collection of essays on political economy, leadership and governance, and corruption and community development, as well as on information technology and education. This book, thus, presents a broad overview of the major problems facing the Nigerian economy. Towards that, the contributors highlight the relationship between good leadership and governance and the economic health of Nigeria as they explore the forces for a meaningful change in the polity. This book asserts that political leaders in Nigeria should be held to a higher standard of leadership and governance in order for the economy to grow and develop for 'common good'. Nigeria's educational system is the foundation for its national development. But this is impossible without investing in human capital (education and health), fixing the existing dilapidated infrastructure and institutions and acquiring technological capability that drive the economy. The power of productivity of the Nigerian economy cannot rise above the quality of its leadership, governance and graduates. Today Nigeria's young democracy is in a state of uncertainty because of ineffective leadership and governance as well as lack of accountability. Since all the essential factors are missing in Nigeria's scheme of affairs, its economy as well as the democracy transition will continue to choke and stagnate. There are myriad ways to reform the Nigerian educational system, improve its quality of graduates and the state of the economy. But closing the nation's higher institutions for five months on the pretext that there is no money to meet teachers demands is not a way to improve the state of education and its weak economy. The trouble with Nigeria's democracy is that the people do not get the type of government they want. For instance, praying to God only, as President Goodluck Jonathan often does, to rescue the nation from its challenges is not by any means a strategy to solve Nigeria's socioeconomic and political problems. His administration needs to adopt a long-term strategy for creating a learning culture to improve the state of education and the security situation so as to tackle its development challenges. This includes motivating the teachers, treating them as professional they really are, and providing them with the tools to effectively educate the youths. Like the Nigerian economy without functional infrastructure and institutions, the leaders cannot strip the teachers of the tools they need to perform their duties and expect them to perform miracles. New challenges require new paradigms. The political leaders should adopt new, effective and innovative methods to meet the needs of the economy, the rapidly growing population and the ethno-religious and politically dynamic society. This book posits that without a paradigm shift in values, beliefs and thinking on ways to reform the Nigerian educational system, as well as to invest in the commanding heights of the economy, its educational system and the economy would remain prostrate with its attendant catalogue of human misery.

Book excerpt: The Man Rochas Anayo Okorocha Governor Rochas Anayo Okorocha is the present governor of Imo State, Nigeria, and has been in the limelight of Nigerian politics for some time now. He seems to be a leader the Imo people and Nigerians as whole need at the moment. Nigeria needs leaders that have vision, charisma, strength, and indomitable will to succeed, leaders who are motivated to action and that can motivate others to embrace hard work. Many Imolites believe that Governor Okorocha, at the age of fifty, as of September 2012, has lived a fulfilled and fulfilling life. The governor's tremendous rise from abject poverty to a high-rated philanthropist of fame highlights important parts of his story. By touching positively the lives of many young people in Nigerian society through his Rochas Foundation and choosing to be a selfless leader, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has distinguished himself as an exemplary leader who chose to be on the path that intersects those of the people, determined to make their lives brighter. Nigeria needs honest, compassionate, benevolent, detribalized men of vision and strength. One will find all these virtues and many more inhabiting Governor Okorocha. There is no doubt that the present administration in Imo will be adjudged the best in the history of the state as the governor has vowed to make Imo one of the fastest-developing states. He is fulfilling his vow by sustaining the massive infrastructural projects and people-oriented programs embarked upon by his administration. No one may doubt the governor's words when he insisted, Today, the bar of governance and leadership in Nigeria has been raised. Men and women who must govern our country or our states must now be men of vision, integrity, and repute. After and when I must have become your governor and left that office, before anybody would be governor again, he has to think twice, because of what I will leave on ground.

Book excerpt: This book , NIGERIA: LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT - ESSAYS IN HONOUR OF CHIBUIKE ROTIMI AMAECHI , is an attempt to clarify the issue about leadership and how , in our circumstances , it has impeded ( or for those who believe differently , facilitated ) the achievement of the Nigeria project. The philosophy behind this book is that if those who are doing well get encouragement they will see the need to remain focussed and stay the course ; they may then inspire others who may aim to achieve even more. It is useful to always be critical in appreciating those who lead because it might help them to improve . But it is most unhelpful to always condemn everything , and thus attracting into the ring those who are entirely shameless. There is something to be gained by encouraging those who show signs of understanding that Nigeria cannot afford to continue muddling through unless it wants to literally fall off the map in a globalized world . Leadership is an honour and an opportunity for service to humanity and not just a platform for self - promotion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JS Tarka occupies a unique place in the history of regionalism and nationalism in Nigeria among Nigerias historical greats: Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello and Zik; while also in a class of his own. In this book, the author reveals a political enigma and leader, his exemplary vision, aura, political sagacity, transformational charismatic leadership and the attractive personality that endeared him to his political contemporaries and the masses of the geographical geopolitical area referred to as Middle Belt. Joseph Sarwuan Tarka, the father of the Middle Belt politics, while he lived, pursued the good of his people in every way he could. His belief in political alliance and unity were central to the unity of the North and its political domination of that historic era. Unity was his religion, what he lived, fought, and died for. He was a great man whose contributions to Nigerias development were remarkable. It would not be an understatement to say that JS was the founder of the National Party of Nigeria and was able to bring all the minorities in Nigeria within the party. The entire Western Nigeria was won by UPN, the East by NPP, and the far North by PRP and GNPP. Shagaris presidency was decided by the minorities in Nigeria because of Tarka. From opposition politics to national statesmanship, Joseph Tarka grew to become one of Nigerias historic greats. He remains one of Nigerias greatest men.
