Book Synopsis Nietzsche and Psychoanalysis by : Daniel Chapelle
Download or read book Nietzsche and Psychoanalysis written by Daniel Chapelle and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a reading of the Nietzschean thought of the eternal return of all things and relates it to Freud's psychoanalysis of the repetition compulsion. Nietzsche's eternal return and Freud's repetition compulsion have never before been so seriously compared. The manner in which this study is executed is drastically different from usual Nietzsche scholarship and Freud studies. Chapelle works with his material until it acquires archetypal levels of significance, even while the level of everyday life experience is never abandoned. He returns the theory and practice of psychologizing and philosophizing to the old ground of imaginative poetic and ultimately mythic thought.
Book Synopsis Nietzsche's Presence in Freud's Life and Thought by : Ronald Lehrer
Download or read book Nietzsche's Presence in Freud's Life and Thought written by Ronald Lehrer and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nature of Freuds relationship to the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche regarded himself, among other things, as a psychologist. His psychological explorations included an understanding of the meaning and function of dreams, the unconscious, sublimation of drives, drives turned inward upon the self, unconscious guilt, unconscious envy, unconscious resistance, and much more that anticipated some of Freuds fundamental psychoanalytic concepts. Although Freud wrote of Nietzsche having anticipated psychoanalytic concepts, he denied that Nietzsche had any influence on his thought.
Book Synopsis Inside/Outside Nietzsche by : Eugene Victor Wolfenstein
Download or read book Inside/Outside Nietzsche written by Eugene Victor Wolfenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Nietzsche is both subject and interlocutor in this innovative study. The book mirrors the psychoanalytic situation, mediating between the philosophical world that Nietzsche created for himself and the external world challenged by his philosophy.Eugene Victor Wolfenstein, a distinguished social theorist and practicing psychoanalyst, focuses on the opposition between the principles of psychoanalytic theory and Nietzsche's concepts of the will to power and perspectivism. Through critical engagement with these Nietzschean concepts, Wolfenstein brings them into the purview of psychoanalytic theory and practice.Using this revised version of psychoanalytic theory, Wolfenstein then conducts a psychobiography of Nietzsche's life. He contends that Nietzsche philosophized from within a transitional space between the maternal and paternal extremes of the male imaginary, a space in which gender identity is notably unstable, and sublimity consorts with the most abject misery. This psychic location is the impetus for Nietzsche's conceptions of eternal return and the feminine. Finally, Wolfenstein explores Nietzsche's genealogy of morals from a psychoanalytic perspective and in the light of Nietzsche's psychobiography. He concludes that Nietzsche's revaluation of values leaves us painfully short on both love and compassion. The whole book is also framed by a critical engagement with Michel Foucault's problematics of power/knowledge.

Book Synopsis Nietzsche and Psychotherapy by : Manu Bazzano
Download or read book Nietzsche and Psychotherapy written by Manu Bazzano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on over a century of international Nietzschean scholarship, this groundbreaking book discusses some of the unexplored psychological reaches of Nietzsche’s thought, as well as their implications for psychotherapeutic practice. Nietzsche’s philosophy anticipated some of the most innovative cultural movements of the last century, from expressionism and surrealism to psychoanalysis, humanistic psychology and phenomenology. But his work on psychology often remains discarded, despite its many insights. Addressing this oversight, and in an age of managerialism and evidence-based practice, this book helps to redefine psychotherapy as an experiment that explores the limits and intricacies of human experience. It builds the foundations for a differentialist psychology: a life-affirming project that can deal squarely with the challenges, joys and sorrows of being human. Nietzsche and Psychotherapy will be of great interest to researchers interested in the relationship between psychotherapy and philosophy, Nietzschean scholars, as well as to clinicians grappling with the challenges of working in the so-called "post-truth" age.
Book Synopsis Nietzsche and the Clinic by : Jared Russell
Download or read book Nietzsche and the Clinic written by Jared Russell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche and the Clinic reimagines what a sustained engagement with Nietzsche's thinking has to offer psychoanalysis today. Beyond the headlines that continue to misrepresent Nietzsche's project, this book portrays Nietzsche as a thinker of tremendous practical import for those treating the emergent pathologies of the twenty-first century with an interpretive approach. The more pressing wager of the book is that, by introducing Nietzsche's thinking into contemporary debates about the nature and function of the psychoanalytic clinic, the future of that clinic can be better secured against attempts to discredit its claims to therapeutic efficacy and to scientific legitimacy. Combining a close textual reading with examples drawn from concrete clinical practice, Nietzsche and the Clinic integrates philosophy and psychoanalysis in ways that move past a merely theoretical attitude, demonstrating how the relationship between philosophy and psychoanalysis can be expanded in ways that are both clinically specific and post-Freudian in orientation. Chapters include extended meditations on Nietzsche's relation to key themes in the work of Helene Deutsch, Wilfred Bion, Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott, and Jacques Lacan.

Book excerpt: Many of the leading Freudian analysts, including in the early days, Jung, Adler, Reich and Rank, attempted to link the writings of Nietzsche with the clinical work of Freud. But what was Nietzsche to Freud--an intuitive anticipation, a precursor, a rival psychologist? Assoun moves beyond the seduction of these attractive analogues to a deeper analysis of the relation between these two figures.
Book Synopsis Nietzschean Psychology and Psychotherapy by : Uri Wernik
Download or read book Nietzschean Psychology and Psychotherapy written by Uri Wernik and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Nietzsche declared himself to be “a psychologist who has not his peer.” Nietzschean Psychology and Psychotherapy: The New Doctors of the Soul illustrates why he was correct and indicates that he was also a soul doctor “who has not his peer.” He is usually unknown to psychologists and treated by philosophers as if he was a philosopher who, as such, wrote about some issues relating to the philosophy of mind. This book acquaints psychologists with Nietzsche and introduces him to philosophers in a new light. It presents Nietzsche’s contributions to psychology, wisdom of life, and psychotherapy dispersed throughout his writings. It hails him the “Overturner,” demonstrating how he overturned many of our notions about love, crime, happiness, morality, language, consciousness, logic, memory, emotions, happiness, and self-actualizing. He is portrayed as the precursor and champion of action-, chance-, and acceptance-oriented self-help and therapy, far from being, as is often claimed, a proponent of depth-, dynamic- or insight-oriented psychotherapy.

Book Synopsis Reframing the Masters of Suspicion by : Andrew Dole
Download or read book Reframing the Masters of Suspicion written by Andrew Dole and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits Paul Ricoeur's classification of Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Sigmund Freud as the “masters of suspicion”, and provides a thought-provoking critique for critical religious studies scholars, as well as anyone working in critical theory more broadly. Whereas Ricoeur saw suspicion as a mode of interpretation, Andrew Dole argues that the method common to his “masters” is better understood as a mode of explanation. Dole replaces Ricoeur's hermeneutics of suspicion with suspicious explanation, which claims the existence of hidden phenomena that are bad in some recognizable way. Each of the masters, Dole argues, offered a distinct kind of suspicious explanation. Reconstructing Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud in this way brings their work into conversation with conspiracy theories, which are themselves a type of suspicious explanation. Dole argues that conspiracy theories and other types of suspicious explanation are “cognitively ensnaring”, to borrow a term from Pascal Boyer. If they are true they are importantly true, but their truth or falsity can be very difficult to ascertain.
Book Synopsis Psychology as Ethics by : Giovanni Colacicchi
Download or read book Psychology as Ethics written by Giovanni Colacicchi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through his clinical work and extensive engagement with major figures of the philosophical tradition, Jung developed an original and pluralistic psycho-ethical model based on the cooperation of consciousness with the unconscious mind. By drawing on direct quotations from Jung’s collected works, The Red Book, and his interviews and seminars – as well as from seminal texts by Kant, Nietzsche, Aristotle and Augustine – Giovanni Colacicchi provides a philosophically grounded analysis of the ethical relevance of Jung’s analytical psychology and of the concept of individuation which is at its core. The author argues that Jung transforms Kant’s consciousness of duty into the duty to be conscious while also endorsing Nietzsche’s project of an individual ethics beyond collective morality. Colacicchi shows that Jung is concerned, like Aristotle, with the human need to acquire a balance between reason and emotions; and that Jung puts forward, with his understanding of the shadow, a moral psychology of the Christian notion of evil. Jung’s psycho-ethical paradigm is thus capable of integrating ethical theories which are often read as mutually exclusive. Psychology as Ethics will be of interest to researchers in the history of ideas and the philosophy of the unconscious, as well as to therapists and counsellors who wish to place their psychodynamic work in its philosophical context. It will also be a key reference for undergraduate and postgraduate courses and seminars in Jungian and Post-Jungian studies, philosophy, psychoanalytic studies, psychology, religious studies and the social sciences.
Book Synopsis Apprehending the Inaccessible by : Richard Askay
Download or read book Apprehending the Inaccessible written by Richard Askay and published by Studies in Phenomenology and E. This book was released on 2006-01-27 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history philosophers have relentlessly pursued what may be called "inaccessible domains." This book explores how the traditions of existential phenomenology relate to Freudian psychoanalysis. A clear, succinct, and systematic account of the philosophical presuppositions of psychoanalytic theory and practice, this work offers a deeper and richer understanding and appreciation of Freudian thought, as well as its antecedents and influences. With its unique perspective on Freud's work, Apprehending the Inaccessible puts readers in a better position to appreciate his contributions and evaluate the relationship between his and other philosophical world views. The authors, both of whom have extensive backgrounds in philosophy and psychology, present balanced critical analyses of crucial developments in, for example, the evolution of the Freudian notion of the unconscious, and the engagement of existential phenomenology with Freudian psychoanalysis. Askay and Farquhar then consider—often for the first time—individual thinkers' reflections on and interpretations of Freud, ranging from the primary figures in existential phenomenology to the most prominent figures in the existential psychoanalytic movement. Even as their work offers a new approach to Freudian thought, it reasserts the importance of alternative views found in existential phenomenology as those views pertain to psychoanalysis and the question of apprehending the inaccessible.
Book Synopsis Nietzsche's Zarathustra by : C. G. Jung
Download or read book Nietzsche's Zarathustra written by C. G. Jung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young man growing up near Basel, Jung was fascinated and disturbed by tales of Nietzsche's brilliance, eccentricity, and eventual decline into permanent psychosis. These volumes, the transcript of a previously unpublished private seminar, reveal the fruits of his initial curiosity: Nietzsche's works, which he read as a student at the University of Basel, had moved him profoundly and had a life-long influence on his thought. During the sessions the mature Jung spoke informally to members of his inner circle about a thinker whose works had not only overwhelmed him with the depth of their understanding of human nature but also provided the philosophical sources of many of his own psychological and metapsychological ideas. Above all, he demonstrated how the remarkable book Thus Spake Zarathustra illustrates both Nietzsche's genius and his neurotic and prepsychotic tendencies. Since there was at that time no thought of the seminar notes being published, Jung felt free to joke, to lash out at people and events that irritated or angered him, and to comment unreservedly on political, economic, and other public concerns of the time. This seminar and others, including the one recorded in Dream Analysis, were given in English in Zurich during the 1920s and 1930s.
