Book excerpt: Organic reactions catalyzed by metal complexes are an effective way to improve atom economy and environmental friendliness for many synthetic transformations. Among the various synthetic transformations, hydrosilylation reaction has huge industrial applications for manufacturing consumer goods. The alkylsilanes from alkene hydrosilylation are widely used as raw materials in manufacturing silicon rubbers, molding implants and adhesive. The hydrosilylation reactions can also produce various organosilicon reagents, which are used in fine chemical synthesis for stereospecific oxidation and cross coupling reaction. Over the long decades, numerous reports on metal-catalyzed hydrosilylations include the use of platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, lanthanides and actinides, early transition metals, iron, cobalt to a limited extent nickel. This work has shown that readily accessible (iPrPDI)CoCl2 reacts with 2 equivalents NaEt3BH at -78 oC in toluene to generate a catalyst that effects highlyselective anti-Markovnikov hydrosilylation of the terminal double bond in alkene, 1,3- and 1,4-dienes. Primary and secondary silanes such as PhSiH3, Ph2SiH2 and PhSi(Me)H2 react with a broad spectrum of dienes without affecting the configuration of the other double bond. A slight modification of the reaction conditions using a less reactive silane (OEt)2Si(Me)H leads to unprecedented and highly selective reduction of the terminal double bond with no contamination from the silane or reduction products of the more substituted double bond. The major limitation for cobalt catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction using redox active PDI ligand is its terminal selectivity. However, this active catalyst did not work for 1,1-disubstituted alkenes. In this connection, we also observed efficient cobalt catalyst system for hydrosilylation of 1,1-disubstituted alkenes using chelating phosphine ligand at room temperature, which is able to do hydrosilylation for numerous substrates such as alkene, vinyl arene, conjugated diene, 1,4-skipped diene and 1,1-disubstituted alkenes. Carbocyclizations of a,¿-p-systems are extremely important and useful reactions for the synthesis of a variety of carbocyclic and heterocyclic compounds. Although metal catalyzed cyclization has been long known, controlling the selectivity (chemo- and regio-) remains an important challenge in this field. Nickel complexes have been known to be specifically effective for cyclic homo-and co-oligomerization of alkenes, alkynes and dienes. During the past few years, through an approach that relied mostly on mechanistic insights and systematic examination of ligand effects, RajanBabu group has discovered a number of protocols for Ni(II)-catalyzed heterodimerization reactions of vinylarenes, selected 1,3-dienes and strained olefins. Substitution of one of the phenyl groups of triphenylphosphine with a 2-benzyloxy-(e.g., L18), 2-benzyloxy-methyl-(L19) or 2-benzyloxyethyl-(L20) phenyl moiety results in a set of simple ligands, which exhibit strikingly different behavior in various nickel (II)-catalyzed olefin dimerization reactions including related cycloisomerization of 1,6-dienes. Nickel(II)-catalyzed cycloisomerization of 1,6-dienes into methylenecyclopentanes, a reaction mechanistically related to the other heterodimerization reactions, is also uniquely affected by nickel(II) complexes of L18, but not of L19 or L20. In an attempt to prepare authentic samples of the methylenecyclohexane products, nickel(II) complexes of N-heterocyclic carbene ligands were examined. In contrast to the phosphine, which gives the methylenecyclopentanes, methylenecyclohexanes are the major products in the N-heterocyclic carbine ligated nickel (II)-mediated reaction. This dissertation discusses the ligand effect on hydrofuctionalization of alkenes using nickel or cobalt metal complexes.

Our group has utilized several redox non-innocent ligands that feature flexible arms with donor substituents. These ligands allow for coordinative flexibility about the metal centre, while the redox non-innocent core helps to overcome the one electron chemistry that is prevalent in first row transition metals. This dissertation focuses on the use of Ph2PPrDI, which can adopt a k4-configuration when bound to a metal. One reaction that is industrially useful is hydrosilylation, which allows for the preparation of silicones that are useful in the lubrication, adhesive, and cosmetics industries. Typically, this reaction relies on highly active, platinum-based catalysts. However, the high cost of this metal has inspired the search for base metal replacements. In Chapter One, an overview of existing alkene and carbonyl hydrosilylation catalysts is presented. Chapter Two focuses on exploring the reactivity of (Ph2PPrDI)Ni towards carbonyl hydrosilylation, as well as the development of the 2nd generation catalysts, (iPr2PPrDI)Ni and (tBu2PPrDI)Ni. Chapter Three presents a new C-O bond hydrosilylation reaction for the formation of silyl esters. It was found the (Ph2PPrDI)Ni is the most active catalyst in the literature for this transformation, with turnover frequencies of up to 900 h-1. Chapter Four explores the activity and selectivity of (Ph2PPrDI)Ni for alkene hydrosilylation, including the first large scope of gem-olefins for a nickel-based catalyst. Chapter Five explores the chemistry of (Ph2PPrDI)CoH, first through electronic structure determinations and crystallography, followed by an investigation of its reactivity towards alkyne hydroboration and nitrile dihydroboration. (Ph2PPrDI)CoH is the first reported cobalt nitrile dihydroboration catalyst.

Particularly, the hydrofunctionalization of olefins is an exciting process to form value-added chemicals from readily available starting materials. In this area, cobalt complexes have been developed as efficient catalysts with high turnover numbers for many transformations and have been especially effective with 1,3-dienes, compared to similar transformations catalyzed by more rare and expensive metals. The process of cobalt-catalyzed hydrovinylation of 1,3-dienes has been developed and this dissertation discusses the application to 1,3-dienes that have siloxy substituents or are cyclic. Another common hydrofunctionalization is hydroboration, a reaction that has recently become a focus for transition-metal catalysis. This work develops and expands on the use of cobalt complexes as catalysts for the hydroboration of 1,3-dienes using pinacolborane. Finally, this dissertation also includes investigation into the mechanism of an already established reaction of Cp2TiCl with epoxides, forming a tertiary carbon-centered radical. This radical reacts with Cp2TiCl to generate Cp2TiHCl by a ß-H atom abstraction. Further evolution of hydrogen from this complex and its relevance to the titanium (III) mediated reaction is discussed. This research is valuable for the selective and efficient synthesis of pharmaceuticals and materials.

Recently, cobalt has proven to be a capable catalyst to affect the heterodimerization reactions of alpha-olefins with aryl alkenes and 1,3-dienes. The hydrovinylation reaction, the formal addition of a hydrogen atom and an alkene across a pi-system, is an atom economical reaction that allows for the synthesis of value-added products from simple commodity chemicals and feedstock gases. The true power of this methodology can be seen in the asymmetric hydrovinylation, where a chiral cobalt catalyst combined with 1,3-dienes and ethylene allow for 1,4-hydrovinylation to install a new vinyl group in near perfect stereo- and regioselectivity. The work presented herein expands established methodology that introduced 1,4-hydrovinylation of simple linear 1,3-dienes using cobalt (II) (bis-phosphine) dichloride and an organoaluminum co-catalyst to include the 1-vinylcycloalkene and 2-silyloxy-1,3-diene classes of compounds. Also presented in this thesis is the asymmetric hydrovinylation of the 1-vinylcycloalkenes and 2-trialkylsilyloxy-1,3-dienes, and efforts towards the derivitization of the products of these reactions.

Using a nickel-catalyzed cationic Heck reaction, we were able to achieve excellent selectivity for branched products (>/=19:1 in all cases) over a wide range of aryl electrophiles and aliphatic olefins. A bidentate ligand with a suitable bite angle and steric profile was key to obtaining high branched/linear selectivity, while the appropriate base suppressed alkene isomerization of the product. Though aryl triflates are traditionally used to access the cationic Heck pathway, we have shown that by using triethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate we can effect a counterion exchange of the catalytic nickel complex such that cheaper and more stable aryl chlorides, mesylates, tosylates, and sulfamates can be used to yield the same branched products with high selectivity. [chemical formula and color illustrations ...] Nickel/photoredox catalysis is used to synthesize indolines in one step from iodoacetanilides and alkenes. Very high regioselectivity for 3-substituted indoline products is obtained for both aliphatic and styrenyl olefins. Mechanistic investigations indicate that oxidation to Ni(III) is necessary to perform the difficult C-N bond-forming reductive elimination, producing a Ni(I) complex which in turn is reduced to Ni(0). This process serves to further demonstrate the utility of photoredox catalysts as controlled single electron transfer agents in multi-oxidation state nickel catalysis.

While nickel sits one row above palladium on the periodic table, ongoing research has illustrated that nickel possesses a unique reactivity profile. Thus, while nickel is commonly thought of as a cheaper alternative to palladium, research in the field of nickel catalysis has demonstrated far more potential than this. The unique propensity of nickel to undergo single electron chemistry as well as its ability to break strong carbon oxygen bonds make research into nickel reactivity an immensely beneficial endeavor to the fields of inorganic, organometallic and synthetic organic chemistry.Chapter 1 describes the development of a stereospecific Suzuki coupling of benzylic carbamates and pivalates with aryl- and heteroarylboronic esters. The reaction proceeds with selective inversion or retention at the electrophilic carbon, depending on the identity of the ligand used. Tricyclohexylphosphine ligand provides products with retention of configuration at the electrophilic carbon, while an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand SIMes provides products with inversion.Chapter 2 discusses the development of a regio- and stereoselective nickel-catalyzed hydroarylation of alkynes using propargylic carbamates as directing groups. The reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions using arylboronic acids in the absence of base. A range of heterocycles and functional groups are tolerated under the reaction conditions. Additionally, the method is applied to the synthesis of tamoxifen.Chapter 3 details a nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling reaction of benzylic esters and aryl halides. Both inter- and intramolecular variants proceed under mild reaction conditions. A range of heterocycles and functional groups are tolerated under the reaction conditions. Additionally, the first example of a stereospecific cross-electrophile coupling of a secondary benzylic ester is described.Chapter 4 presents secondary benzylzinc reagents generated from 2-pyridylcarbinols using a nickel catalyst and diethylzinc. Substrates are activated in situ using a chlorophosphate reagent. Quenching the organozinc reagents allows for facile deoxygenation of 2-pyridylcarbinols in a one-pot reaction with straightforward incorporation of a deuterium label from deuteromethanol. An intramolecular conjugate addition of a secondary benzylzinc reagent with an alpha,beta-unsaturated ester is also demonstrated.
