Book Synopsis State of Healthcare 2008 by : Great Britain. Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection
Download or read book State of Healthcare 2008 written by Great Britain. Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Healthcare Commission is the independent watchdog for England. Its function is to assess and report on the quality and safety of services provide by the NHS and independent sector. This is the fifth and final annual 'State of Healthcare Report', as the Commission is to be replaced by the Care Quality Commission on 1 April 2009. The report is mainly about the findings for the financial year 2007-08, but it also reflects on the progress that has been made in healthcare over the past five years. The report presents six pictures of the state of healthcare: for mothers; for children and young people; for people with mental health needs; for people with a learning disability; for people needing urgent and hospital care; and of the support offered to enhance people's health and wellbeing in the community. The Commission highlights improvements, with better use and management of resources in the NHS, falling death rates from cancer and heart disease, progress in public health matters such as smoking, a greater attention to safety. Concerns remain, however: a variable picture of quality in maternity services, mental health services and urgent care; commissioning of healthcare; meeting the needs of the more vulnerable in society; children's services; care for older people. Further improvement is needed to ensure that patients really are at the centre of care, are able to make meaningful choices, be fully involved in decisions and have the information they need.

Book Synopsis Financial Management in the NHS by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts
Download or read book Financial Management in the NHS written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the financial performance of the NHS and NHS Foundation Trusts. The Department of Health and the NHS achieved a surplus of £1,674 million in 2007-08. The surplus was significantly higher than the original forecast of £916 million and more than three times that recorded in 2006-07 (£515 million). In 2006-07, the surplus was concentrated in the Strategic Health Authorities, which are administrative bodies, with the Primary Care Trust and NHS Trust sectors remaining in deficit. All sectors are now in surplus and the quality of financial management at individual NHS organisations improved during 2007-08. The surplus represents funding that was made available but which was not used and there is a real risk that patients lose out because the NHS is not spending its allocated funding on treating them. The Department has committed itself to making the surplus available to the NHS for spending in future years. Some long-standing financial problems affect a minority of trusts which remain in deficit, and some regional variations in financial performance persist. During a period of economic uncertainty when resources are severely stretched it is more important than ever that the NHS can demonstrate value for money and continuous improvements in productivity. The Department intends that the NHS should generate £15 billion in efficiency savings over the next three years. Going forward the Department and NHS face a number of challenges, including changes to the financial reporting framework and timetable, and further system reforms under which a quality element will be introduced into how NHS organisations are funded. The surplus generated and better financial management should, if maintained, help deal with the financial implications of meeting these challenges.

This book was released on 2007-04-20 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's previous report into this issue (HCP 697, session 2002-03, ISBN 9780215011978) published in July 2003, examined the Government's policy reforms for patient and public involvement in the NHS, and in particular the concerns raised by the transition from Community Health Councils (CHCs) to new systems and structures such as Patient and Public Involvement Forums (PPIfs). Now, just over three years after they were established, the Government has set out plans to replace PPIfs with Local Involvement Networks (LINks), through the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Bill (HCB 16, session 2006-07, ISBN 9780215708014) currently going through Parliament. This current report seeks to inform the Commons consideration of the report stage of this Bill as well as considering a number of broader issues, including: the recent history of patient and public involvement, the effectiveness of LINks, major consultations and the Secretary of State's interventions in such consultations, and the Government's proposals to amend section 11 of the Health and Social Care Act 2001.

Book Synopsis Digital Welfare for the Third Age by : Brian D. Loader
Download or read book Digital Welfare for the Third Age written by Brian D. Loader and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the ways digital technology can contribute to the welfare of older people. The Internet, mobile phones and other technologies have changed how we live and work. Such technologies also shape how services for older people are organised in ways that potentially place carers and older people at the centre of service provision. Telecare can make homes ‘smart’ so that they are more comfortable and less risky for people who can take advantage of devices that help make them independent members of their community. Digital Welfare is part of the broader project in Britain and elsewhere to adopt new information and communications technologies (ICTs) to organise and deliver health and social welfare services. This includes mundane technologies like an alarm to call for help to complex telecare ‘smart homes’ and electronic patient records. The intended and unintended consequences of such new technologies must be explored if we are to benefit from these innovations. Based on recent research this book seeks to highlight and examine the new opportunities and dilemmas that confront older people and all those concerned with their welfare in the network society. This edited collection provides original contributions from leading academics and researchers in the field to access the evidence for improved professional integration and user-centred health and social care services for older people arising from health informatics. Digital Welfare for the Third Age will be of interest to all those working with older people.
