Book excerpt: Art, music, game goods, and movies are all examples of digital assets that reflect real-world things such as NFTs. The majority of them are purchased and sold online, often in cryptocurrency exchange, and they are usually programmed using the same underlying software as many other digital currencies. However, despite the fact that they have been available since 2014, NFTs are growing in popularity due to the statistic that they are becoming an increasingly popular method of purchasing and selling digital artwork. Since November 2017, a whopping $174 million has been spent on NFTs, which is an all-time high. Aside from that, NFTs are usually unique, or at the very least one of a very limited run, and unique identification codes identify them. According to Arry Yu, head of the Washington Technology Industry Association Cascadia Blockchain Council and managing director of Yellow Umbrella Ventures, "in essence, NFTs generate digital scarcity." This is in striking contrast to the vast majority of digital works, which are virtually always available in an unlimited quantity. Thus, if a specific item is in high demand, shutting down the supply of that asset should, increase the value of that asset. In reality, many NFTs have been digital works that already exist in some form in other places, such as famous video clips from NBA games or securitized copies of digital art that is already floating around on Instagram, at least in their early stages. A well-known digital artist, better known as "Beeple," created "EVERYDAYS: The First 5000 Days" from a composite of 5,000 daily drawings, which became the most expensive NFT ever sold at Christie's for a world record-breaking $69.3 million in 2011. Online, anybody may see individual images-or even the whole collage of images-for no charge at any time. As a result, individuals are ready to pay millions of dollars on something that they could simply capture or download for free. Because a non-financial transaction enables the buyer to retain ownership of the original object. Not only that, but it also has built-in authentication, which acts as a means of establishing evidence of ownership. It is nearly as valuable as the object itself to collectors for them to have those "digital bragging rights."

Book excerpt: A beautifully produced anthology of crypto-artist, writer, and hacker Rhea Myers's pioneering blockchain art, along with a selection of her essays, reviews, and fictions. DAO? BTC? NFT? ETH? ART? WTF? HODL as OG crypto-artist, writer, and hacker Rhea Myers searches for faces in cryptographic hashes, follows a day in the life of a young shibe in the year 2032, and patiently explains why all art should be destructively uploaded to the blockchain. Now an acknowledged pioneer whose work has graced the auction room at Sotheby’s, Myers embarked on her first art projects focusing on blockchain tech in 2011, making her one of the first artists to engage in creative, speculative, and conceptual engagements with "the new internet." Proof of Work brings together annotated presentations of Myers’s blockchain artworks along with her essays, reviews, and fictions—a sustained critical encounter between the cultures and histories of the artworld and crypto-utopianism, technically accomplished but always generously demystifying and often mischievous. Her deep understanding of the technical history and debates around blockchain technology is complemented by a broader sense of the crypto movement and the artistic and political sensibilities that accompanied its ascendancy. Remodeling the tropes of conceptual art and net.art to explore what blockchain technology reveals about our concepts of value, culture, and currency, Myers’s work has become required viewing for anyone interested in the future of art, consensus, law, and collectivity.

Book excerpt: The ultimate guide to the NFT revolution: How non-fungible tokens are poised to transform the digital world. Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, are the most important digital innovation since the creation of blockchain and cryptocurrency. NFTs share the best elements of both of these, while also representing an entirely new step forward for technology. But how did NFTs arise, how will they impact art and business in the decades to come, and—perhaps most importantly—how can savvy entrepreneurs position themselves today for success in the NFT-driven world of tomorrow? This guide by industry leader and entrepreneur Marc Beckman delves into the underpinnings of NFT technology in a way that makes the subject clear and comprehensible to the layman, while drawing on Marc’s branding experience to explore exactly how NFTs are poised to change fashion, sport, fine art, and even social justice. In this book he explores how NFTs will create entirely new asset classes and investment possibilities, such as fractional ownership in dynamic works of art. And in doing so, he also tells the story of how he personally discovered and became entranced by this powerful new tool, and where he believes NFTs will take business and branding throughout the 21st century.

Book excerpt: Everything You Need to Know About NFTs-the Crypto Art Selling For Millions Your guide to the cryptocurrency collectibles that are taking the digital art and music world by storm. Non-Fungible Tokens, or NFTs, are currently in the midst of the type of hype-cycle last seen in the blockchain/crypto world when Initial Coin Offerings were all the rage. On March 11, 2021, an NFT associated with a piece of digital art sold at auction at Christie's for $69 million. Other NFTs, such as one based on Jack Dorsey's first Tweet, are selling for millions as well, and there is an active secondary market for some NFTs which can drive prices up quickly after the initial sale. The burgeoning market for NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, is turning the art, music, and finance worlds upside down. Recently, Grimes sold almost $6 million of her digital art-renderings of tattooed, spear-wielding cherubs floating in purple-hued post-apocalyptic ruins-as NFTs on Nifty Gateway, the "premier marketplace" for NFTs. Kings of Leon became the first band to offer an album as both a streamable collection of songs and an NFT. In the sports world, game highlights can be bought and sold as NFTs, though anyone can watch these for free. NFTs have rapidly become the next big thing in cryptocurrency's crossover out of elusive anonymous e-wallet dealings and into the more public cultural web sphere. If you've seen any of this news and wondered, okay so what even is an NFT?, here is a brief guide to the emerging form of digital collectibles. Book excerpt: NFTs, non-fungible tokens, as collectible, digital, blockchain-secured files became an international sensation in 2020, with the trend in trading them peaking in the fall of 2021. Many sold for millions, and one even sold for $69 million. And yet what exactly are they, and why do they have value? This is the definitive book on NFTs in the story of art and collecting. It is co-authored by an art historian who has written often on the value of art and the history of collecting. NFTs caught Noah Charney’s attention and fascinated him. He, too, felt that initial knee-jerk reaction that so many who hear of a $69 million sale do: how is this digital image different from me clicking “right-click save” on my touchpad and downloading it to my computer? Why would anyone pay $69 million for something that’s not f*cking there? This book provides answers to these questions and far more. Charney sees in NFTs a direct parallel to the history, sociology and psychology of art collecting. He was recently a “normee” but he’s now halfway inside the club—he is also an acknowledged authority on the history of art and collecting. He knows all there is to know about humans collecting things of no practical value but that we just really want. But then he worked for a period with two crypto-related companies, and got to know this world from within. He’s not alone on this ride. The second half of this book is written by someone who knows just about all there is to know about NFTs: Kenny Schachter. Kenny is an artist, collector, curator, professor, columnist and NFT influencer. In fact, he was listed in the fall of 2021 as among the 30 most influential people in the world of NFTs. He even coined (and trademarked) a term, NFTism. While Charney is an art historian considering the NFT phenomenon from the thoughtful but remote perch of his couch, examining NFTs historical and within the context of collecting and the value of art, Kenny has been “in the field” more than anyone, even during the pandemic, zipping from London to Zurich to Art Basel Switzerland to Art Basel Miami. He has his finger on the virtual, digital pulse of this fascinating, bizarre, hugely lucrative phenomenon. Welcome to the definitive book on NFTs.

Book excerpt: The Bauhaus school in Germany has long been understood through the writings of its founding director, Walter Gropius, and well-known artists who taught there such as Wassily Kandinsky and László Moholy-Nagy. Far less recognized are texts by women in the school’s weaving workshop. In Bauhaus Weaving Theory, T’ai Smith uncovers new significance in the work the Bauhaus weavers did as writers. From colorful, expressionist tapestries to the invention of soundproofing and light-reflective fabric, the workshop’s innovative creations influenced a modernist theory of weaving. In the first careful examination of the writings of Bauhaus weavers, including Anni Albers, Gunta Stözl, and Otti Berger, Smith details how these women challenged assumptions about the feminine nature of their craft. As they harnessed the vocabulary of other disciplines like painting, architecture, and photography, Smith argues, the weavers resisted modernist thinking about distinct media. In parsing texts about tapestries and functional textiles, the vital role these women played in debates about medium in the twentieth century and a nuanced history of the Bauhaus comes to light. Bauhaus Weaving Theory deftly reframes the Bauhaus weaving workshop as central to theoretical inquiry at the school. Putting questions of how value and legitimacy are established in the art world into dialogue with the limits of modernism, Smith confronts the belief that the crafts are manual and technical but never intellectual arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeply researched warning about how the digital economy threatens artists' lives and work—the music, writing, and visual art that sustain our souls and societies—from an award-winning essayist and critic There are two stories you hear about earning a living as an artist in the digital age. One comes from Silicon Valley. There's never been a better time to be an artist, it goes. If you've got a laptop, you've got a recording studio. If you've got an iPhone, you've got a movie camera. And if production is cheap, distribution is free: it's called the Internet. Everyone's an artist; just tap your creativity and put your stuff out there. The other comes from artists themselves. Sure, it goes, you can put your stuff out there, but who's going to pay you for it? Everyone is not an artist. Making art takes years of dedication, and that requires a means of support. If things don't change, a lot of art will cease to be sustainable. So which account is true? Since people are still making a living as artists today, how are they managing to do it? William Deresiewicz, a leading critic of the arts and of contemporary culture, set out to answer those questions. Based on interviews with artists of all kinds, The Death of the Artist argues that we are in the midst of an epochal transformation. If artists were artisans in the Renaissance, bohemians in the nineteenth century, and professionals in the twentieth, a new paradigm is emerging in the digital age, one that is changing our fundamental ideas about the nature of art and the role of the artist in society.
