Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, the U.S. government commissioned a project to create the perfect soldier. A range of experiments was performed on a group of soldiers, including genetic reconstruction which was made possible by a serum created by Dr. Emanuel Brown. Despite the advancements made, the project was deemed a failure and the soldiers were discharged, much to the chagrin of its leader, General James S. Lassiter. The general and Dr. Brown continued their experiments, administering the trial serum to each other. After years of experimentation, Dr. Brown and General Lassiter would eventually part ways, both thinking that their efforts of perfecting the serum were fruitless. It wouldn’t be until the birth of the general’s son that the effects of the serum would be realized. The power of the serum had been passed down genetically from the original test subjects to their offspring, giving them super human abilities. The general realized that all of the offspring of those to whom the serum was administered would have superior traits as well. Realizing the potential of these children, the general gathered a group of renegade soldiers, who shared his views of hatred toward the government, and formed an organization known as STING. He hunted down and killed the soldiers of the original project and abducted their children. He took them to a hidden compound so he could raise and train them to be his superior army. Dr. Brown foresaw the evil of the general’s ambitions. With the help of a small band of Ascended children he called the Omega Nexus, he organized an escape that would lead to the destruction of the STING compound and STING. Now, STING has reassembled for the sole purpose of recollecting the Ascended who are now extremely powerful adults scattered throughout the United States. Unbeknownst to STING, the Omega Nexus is waiting...

Book excerpt: Composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) likely suffered from a manic-depressive disorder but in his time very little was known about mental illness, and suicide was not a topic for general discussion. Wagner was often plagued by extreme mood swings; he used his operas, especially the librettos, to express himself and his personal difficulties. This investigation of the suicidal themes in Wagner's life and operas--Die Fliegender Hollander, Tannhauser, Lohengrin, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger, the Ring cycle, and Parsifal--shows how manic-depressive illness, particularly the depressive part of it, affected Wagner's life and art. It also analyzes the influence of Giambattista Vico's theories of cycles (and how these theories appeared in Wagner's work), suicide as a theatrical and operatic phenomenon, and the way in which the theme of suicide has appeared in other works of the literary and performing arts.

Book excerpt: ‘An unsettling wave of trepidation filled Brianna as she stared into those jet, black pools that lacked any semblance of spirit. Of life. She was staring into the abyss and could only imagine what horrors would crawl up from their bitter, plummeting depths. She had come from Bedlam and would soon begin her descent into hell.’ Brianna Lane, a plucky and cynical waitress, is taken from the dreary, metropolis of Bedlam to the mystifying and treacherous realm of Thensera. It is there, that the waitress, abruptly finds herself in the midst of a universal war between the forces of order and chaos. Deemed the ‘Champion of Light’ and aided by her devoted guardians, Brianna, embarks on a quest to unlock the Veritas; an ancient power source that is - the key - to closing a great, hell mouth. Plagued by relentless demons, nightmarish fiends, merging realms and other tormenting trials, Brianna’s biggest adversity may be her own crippling, self-doubt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the global population ages, disability demographics are shifting. Societal transformation and global health inequities have changed who is likely to reach old age, who is likely to live with disability, and the relationship between aging and disability in various socio-cultural and geopolitical contexts. The Aging–Disability Nexus breaks new ground by bringing gerontology and disability studies into dialogue with each other through a variety of empirical, conceptual, and pedagogical approaches. Contributors explore the tensions that shape the way disability and aging are understood, experienced, and responded to at both individual and systemic levels, while avoiding the common tendency to conflate these overlapping elements and map them onto a normative, faulty notion of the human life trajectory. This perceptive work analyzes the distinction between aging with a disability and aging into disability, and reveals how multiple identities, socio-economic forces, culture, and community give form to our experiences.

Book excerpt: It is my great joy to introduce you to Wild Love, this volume of ecstatic poetry by Dreaming-Bear Baraka Kanaan. A true spoken word genius, Dreaming-Bear is this generation's poet laureate of the heart. Dreaming-Bear is a master of metaphor; "each molecule-mantra" tenderly kissing the soul's "supernova of senses." As you turn these pages, be prepared to be awakened as his eloquent and alluring words transport you to the "naked tenderness of truth" and the laughter and playfulness of "holy amorous mischief." Dreaming-Bear's spiritual DNA is powerful. A prodigy of Native American and Middle Eastern (Lebanese)decent, his ancestry illustrates a similar lineage with some of the worlds most profound poets: Gibran, Rumi, and Hafiz. Reminiscent of these poetic greats, Dreaming-Bear's understanding of science and spirit as well as his deep attunement to the whispers of nature allow you to see yourself as Lover and Beloved, in universal Oneness. Through his words we become enlightened, separation becomes an illusion, and a spiritual awakening unfolds. Our layers of identity, stories, victories, and laments to the Self that transcend personality disappear and we discover or our ultimate identity that is everyone and everything. Far from a state of self-delusion or escapism, this awakening represents the ultimate development of the most valuable qualities of human life: kindness, compassion, freedom, intelligence, and creativity. Under Dreaming-Bear's love spell, you will be ravished by "subatomic particles having a party" and will be moved to "undress your soul inside your heart's hallway." Together with Dreaming-Bear we can end the emotional ignorance of the past and learn to treat each other and ourselves with greater dignity and understanding. His work deserves a wide and universal audience of not only poetry lovers, but also of life lovers everywhere. His vision is fully worthy of our cosmic status as spiritual beings in human form. "Wild Love" can uplift the human race into human grace, where we can live "the light of a billion suns" and "surrender everything to love" for "tonight we dance!" - Harold Bloomfield, M.D., author of nineteen books including The New York Times best-seller "How to Survive the Loss of a Love." In the tradition of Rumi or Hafiz, Wild Love is a collection of love spells written in luminous word tapestries and divinely orchestrated to deeply inspire, passionately move, and spiritually intoxicate the reader to rise soul over senses in love. Through each heartfelt, magical, and poetic spell you will find yourself awakening to the unconditional love of Source, Lover, and the Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love and Death in Lawrence and Foucault is the first full-length study of Foucault and the Foucaultians not to look at them from a quasi-hagiographical perspective. The Lawrentian point of view employed here to deal with Foucault and his oeuvre is utterly unique, imaginative, and efficacious in explicating/demystifying Foucaultian theory, while at the same time promoting Barry J. Scherr's courageous, indefatigable project of restoring D. H. Lawrence to his rightfully and supremely high place in the pantheon of great British literature. Rebellious and unconventional yet scholarly and mature, Love and Death in Lawrence and Foucault is the bravest and most unorthodox study of Foucault to date. It is a worthy addition to Scherr's previous literary-cultural studies, D. H. Lawrence Today and D. H. Lawrence's Response to Plato. A supremely lively, incisive, lucid, and profound critique, Love and Death in Lawrence and Foucault is indispensable to students and scholars of Lawrence and Foucault alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A year-long journey by the renowned psychiatrist and his writer wife after her terminal diagnosis, as they reflect on how to love and live without regret. Internationally acclaimed psychiatrist and author Irvin Yalom devoted his career to counseling those suffering from anxiety and grief. But never had he faced the need to counsel himself until his wife, esteemed feminist author Marilyn Yalom, was diagnosed with cancer. In A Matter of Death and Life, Marilyn and Irv share how they took on profound new struggles: Marilyn to die a good death, Irv to live on without her. In alternating accounts of their last months together and Irv's first months alone, they offer us a rare window into facing mortality and coping with the loss of one's beloved. The Yaloms had numerous blessings—a loving family, a Palo Alto home under a magnificent valley oak, a large circle of friends, avid readers around the world, and a long, fulfilling marriage—but they faced death as we all do. With the wisdom of those who have thought deeply, and the familiar warmth of teenage sweethearts who've grown up together, they investigate universal questions of intimacy, love, and grief. Informed by two lifetimes of experience, A Matter of Death and Life is an openhearted offering to anyone seeking support, solace, and a meaningful life.
