They get next semester's course schedule in the mail, and first on the list is the mother of all loathed college courses . . . CALCULUS! Not to fear-The Complete Idiot's Guide to Calculus, Second Edition, like its predecessor, is a curriculum-based companion book created with this audience in mind. This new edition continues the tradition of taking the sting out of calculus by adding more explanatory graphs and illustrations and doubling the number of practice problems! And with any luck, they may even be able to make sense of their textbooks and teachers.
Book Synopsis THE TRUTH OF THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE by : Sabrie Soloman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matured Creation - Finely Tuned Earth The concept of a matured creation and a finely tuned Earth is a fascinating topic that has sparked much debate in the realms of science, religion, and philosophy. Proponents of this idea argue that the universe and the Earth were created in a state of maturity and perfection, with all the necessary conditions for life to thrive. One of the key arguments for a matured creation is the idea of fine-tuning in the universe. This concept suggests that the fundamental physical constants and laws of nature are precisely calibrated to allow for the existence of life as we know it. For example, if the strength of gravity or the electromagnetic force were even slightly different, life as we know it would not be possible. This level of precision has led some to suggest that a higher power must have orchestrated the creation of the universe with the express purpose of allowing life to flourish on Earth. Moreover, the Earth itself is viewed as a finely tuned machine that provides the perfect conditions for life. From the composition of the atmosphere to the distance of our planet from the sun, everything seems to be finely calibrated to allow for the existence of living organisms. The intricate ecosystems that exist on Earth further demonstrate the complexity and harmony of this finely tuned planet.
Book Synopsis Newton the Alchemist by : William R. Newman
Download or read book Newton the Alchemist written by William R. Newman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book that finally demystifies Newton’s experiments in alchemy When Isaac Newton’s alchemical papers surfaced at a Sotheby’s auction in 1936, the quantity and seeming incoherence of the manuscripts were shocking. No longer the exemplar of Enlightenment rationality, the legendary physicist suddenly became “the last of the magicians.” Newton the Alchemist unlocks the secrets of Newton’s alchemical quest, providing a radically new understanding of the uncommon genius who probed nature at its deepest levels in pursuit of empirical knowledge. In this evocative and superbly written book, William Newman blends in-depth analysis of newly available texts with laboratory replications of Newton’s actual experiments in alchemy. He does not justify Newton’s alchemical research as part of a religious search for God in the physical world, nor does he argue that Newton studied alchemy to learn about gravitational attraction. Newman traces the evolution of Newton’s alchemical ideas and practices over a span of more than three decades, showing how they proved fruitful in diverse scientific fields. A precise experimenter in the realm of “chymistry,” Newton put the riddles of alchemy to the test in his lab. He also used ideas drawn from the alchemical texts to great effect in his optical experimentation. In his hands, alchemy was a tool for attaining the material benefits associated with the philosopher’s stone and an instrument for acquiring scientific knowledge of the most sophisticated kind. Newton the Alchemist provides rare insights into a man who was neither Enlightenment rationalist nor irrational magus, but rather an alchemist who sought through experiment and empiricism to alter nature at its very heart.
Download or read book Cosmology written by Edward Harrison and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-03-16 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosmology: The Science of the Universe is an introduction to past and present cosmological theory. For much of the world's history, cosmological thought was formulated in religious or philosophical language and was thus theological or metaphysical in nature. However, cosmological speculation and theory has now become a science in which the empirical discoveries of the astronomer, theoretical physicist, and biologist are woven into intricate models that attempt to account for the universe as a whole. Professor Harrison draws on the discoveries and speculations of these scientists to provide a comprehensive survey of man's current understanding of the universe and its history. Tracing the rise of the scientific method, the major aim of this book is to provide an elementary understanding of the physical universe of modern times. Thoroughly revised and updated, this second edition extends the much acclaimed first edition taking into account the many developments that have occurred.
Book Synopsis The Riddle of the Universe at the Close of the Nineteenth Century [Second Edition] by : Ernst Haeckel

This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greatly influenced by Charles Darwin, the famed German zoologist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) boldly defended the fact of organic evolution and seriously considered its far-reaching ramifications for science, philosophy, and theology. Advocating the interplay of empirical evidence and rational speculation, The Riddle of the Universe is his most daring, comprehensive, and successful work. Its monistic and naturalistic worldview offers a cosmic perspective and evolutionary framework that supplants traditional theistic beliefs in God, free will, and the personal immortality of the human soul. This classic volume remains a tour de force of critical thought, free inquiry, and intellectual value. This is the Second Edition, first published in 1901, and includes a Translator’s Preface by Joseph McCabe.

Book Synopsis Glory, Jest and Riddle by : James Malcolm Byrne
Download or read book Glory, Jest and Riddle written by James Malcolm Byrne and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century Enlightenment in Western Europe was a time in which everyday life was still dominated by religion. Religion was the context in which life was lived from cradle to grave, scientific innovations were judged against its truth and it claimed allegiance from all levels of society. It was also a powerful political force, and the church dominated education. Religion impinged on people's lives whether they wished it or not. So investigation of religious thought in the Enlightenment goes to the very heart of what the Enlightenment was. The aim of this new text book is to situate Enlightenment ideas in context, to show the concerns which gave rise to them and to point out their consequences - which were far-reaching and tied to practical concerns. After two chapters which give a historical account of the period the focus turns to the main figures -Descartes, Pascal, Rousseau and Kant - along with considerations of the rise of deism and the shift from scepticism to atheism. There is also an account of the impact that science began to have on religion. Today the Enlightenment is seen not only in positive terms, as the emergence of humanity from darkness and an important step forward, but also negatively, as bearing the seeds of many of the ills of the modern world. In particular, theologians dissatisfied with the liberal theology which followed the Enlightenment have argued that true Christian theology must side-step, or go back on, Enlightenment thought. The argument is likely to go on for some time, but at least this book will help it to continue with a greater degree of understanding than has often been shown so far. James Byrne is Senior Lecturer in Theology and Religious Studies at St Mary's University College, Strawberry Hill.

Book Synopsis Realism, Science, and Pragmatism by : Kenneth R. Westphal
Download or read book Realism, Science, and Pragmatism written by Kenneth R. Westphal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original essays aims to reinvigorate the debate surrounding philosophical realism in relation to philosophy of science, pragmatism, epistemology, and theory of perception. Questions concerning realism are as current and as ancient as philosophy itself; this volume explores relations between different positions designated as ‘realism’ by examining specific cases in point, drawn from a broad range of systematic problems and historical views, from ancient Greek philosophy through the present. The first section examines the context of the project; contributions systematically engage the historical background of philosophical realism, re-examining key works of Aristotle, Descartes, Quine, and others. The following two sections epitomize the central tension within current debates: scientific realism and pragmatism. These contributions address contemporary questions of scientific realism and the reality of the objects of science, and consider whether, how or the extent to which realism and pragmatism are compatible. With an editorial introduction by Kenneth R. Westphal, these fourteen original essays provide wide-ranging, salient insights into the status of realism today.
