Book Synopsis Biodiversity, Biosystematics, and Ecology of Canadian Coleoptera by : Christopher G Majka
Download or read book Biodiversity, Biosystematics, and Ecology of Canadian Coleoptera written by Christopher G Majka and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÿThis volume includes fourteen research articles on Canadian Coleoptera, mainly on the families Staphylinidae, Leiodidae, Histeridae, Nitidulidae, Cucujidae, Phalacridae, Silvanidae, Laemophloeidae, Tetratomidae, several aquatic groups, and others. An introductory editorial traces the history of scientific research and indicates areas of future inquiry. The papers address various questions with respect to the distribution, dispersal, zoogeographical status, phenology, and bionomics of Canadian Coleoptera, the role of saproxylic beetles in forest ecosystems, and invasive species in native habitats. The answers to these questions have important economic and environmental consequences. The book is addressed to coleopterists, ecologists, biogeographers, and conservationists.

Book Synopsis Annotated List of the Lepidoptera of Alberta, Canada by : Greg Pohl
Download or read book Annotated List of the Lepidoptera of Alberta, Canada written by Greg Pohl and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This checklist of the Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) of Alberta lists 2367 species reported to occur in the province, as well as 138 species whose occurrence in Alberta is probable. Each species entry includes adult flight time and distribution status in the Cordilleran, Boreal, and Grasslands ecozones, as well as references to taxonomic works and to the literature and public collection sources of the records. Detailed notes on taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution, habitat, and biology are given for 1524 of the listed species. An additional section provides details on 171 species erroneously reported from Alberta in previous works. The authors hope it will be a useful resource for anyone carrying out species-level work on Lepidoptera in western Canada, or taxonomic work on Lepidoptera in general. An introductory section provides a general overview of the order Lepidoptera and the natural regions of Alberta, and the history and current state of knowledge of Alberta Lepidoptera. Each of the 63 families (and selected subfamilies) occurring in Alberta is briefly reviewed, with information on distinguishing features, general appearance, and general biology. The list is accompanied by an appendix of proposed nomenclature changes, consisting of revised status for 25 taxa raised from synonymy to species level, and new synonymy for 20 species-level and one genus-level taxa here considered to be subjective synonyms, with resultant revised synonymy for one taxon and formalization of seven new combinations.
Book Synopsis The Greenland Entomofauna by : Jens Böcher
Download or read book The Greenland Entomofauna written by Jens Böcher and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Greenland Entomofauna an international team of 64 taxonomic specialists provide for the first time a richly illustrated guide to the identification of the ≈1200 species of Hexapods/Insects, Arachnids and Myriapods so far known to occur in the country. While the composition, origin and adaptations of the Greenland fauna has always been a challenge to biogeographers and ecologists/ecophysiologists, the provision of a tool for detailed identification of its constituent species is now particularly timely, since global climate change will expectedly have a particularly noticeable impact on biota at high latitudes. This obviously renders the feasibility of monitoring distributional range shifts of the principal components of this biota a matter of some urgency. Book Synopsis Biological Systematics by : Andrew V. Z. Brower
Download or read book Biological Systematics written by Andrew V. Z. Brower and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the history and philosophy of biological systematics (phylogenetics, taxonomy and classification of living things) is key to successful practice of the discipline. In this thoroughly revised Third Edition of the classic Biological Systematics, Andrew V. Z. Brower and Randall T. Schuh provide an updated account of cladistic principles and techniques, emphasizing their empirical and epistemological clarity. Brower and Schuh cover: -the history and philosophy of systematics -the mechanics and methods of character analysis, phylogenetic inference, and evaluation of results -the practical application of systematic results to: -biological classification -adaptation and coevolution -biodiversity, and conservation -new chapters on species and molecular clocks Biological Systematics is both a textbook for students studying systematic biology and a desk reference for practicing systematists. Part explication of concepts and methods, part exploration of the underlying epistemology of systematics, This third edition addresses why some methods are more empirically sound than others.
