Book Synopsis Phylogeny and Evolution of the Mollusca by : Winston Ponder
Download or read book Phylogeny and Evolution of the Mollusca written by Winston Ponder and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2008-03-25 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ponder and Lindberg provides a breathtaking overview of the evolutionary history of the Mollusca, effectively melding information from anatomy, ecology, genomics, and paleobiology to explore the depths of molluscan phylogeny. Its outstanding success is due to thoughtful planning, focused complementary contributions from 36 expert authors, and careful editing. This volume is a must for malacologists."—Bruce Runnegar, Department of Earth and Space Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles "Our understanding of the phylogeny and evolutionary history of the mollusca has been revolutionized over the past two decades through new molecular data and analysis, and reinvestigation of morphological characters. In this volume Ponder, Lindberg, and their colleagues do a wonderful job of integrating this work to provide new perspectives on the relationships of the major molluscan clades, their evolutionary dynamics, and their history. Particularly timely is the coverage of molluscan evo-devo and genomics."—Douglas H. Erwin, Curator of Paleozoic Invertebrates, National Museum of Natural History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark scientific reference for scientists, researchers, and students of marine biology tackles the monumental task of taking a complete biodiversity inventory of the Gulf of Mexico with full biotic and biogeographic information. Presenting a comprehensive summary of knowledge of Gulf biota through 2004, the book includes seventy-seven chapters, which list more than fifteen thousand species in thirty-eight phyla or divisions and were written by 138 authors from seventy-one institutions in fourteen countries. This first volume of Gulf of Mexico Origin, Waters, and Biota, a multivolumed set edited by John W. Tunnell Jr., Darryl L. Felder, and Sylvia A. Earle, provides information on each species' habitat, biology, and geographic range, along with full references and a narrative introduction to the group, which opens each chapter.
Download or read book The Mollusks written by Charles F. Sturm and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mollusks have been important to humans since our earliest days. Initially, when humans were primarily interested in what they could eat or use, mollusks were important as food, ornaments, and materials for tools. Over the centuries, as human knowledge branched out and individuals started to study the world around them, mollusks were important subjects for learning how things worked. In this volume, the editors and contributors have brought together a broad range of topics within the field of malacology. It is our expectation that these topics will be of interest and use to amateur and professional malacologists.

Book Synopsis Geological Setting, Palaeoenvironment and Archaeology of the Red Sea by : Najeeb M.A. Rasul
Download or read book Geological Setting, Palaeoenvironment and Archaeology of the Red Sea written by Najeeb M.A. Rasul and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers invited contributions from active researchers to provide an up-to-date overview of the geological setting of the Red Sea. It discusses aspects ranging from historical information to modern research in the Red Sea, and presents findings from rapidly advancing, emerging fields. This semi-enclosed young ocean basin provides a unique opportunity to study the development of passive continental margins in order to examine the current status of that region. In addition to studies on the Sea itself, it includes those from related fields on the littoral zone. The book is of interest to geoscientists and non-specialists alike.

Book Synopsis Marine Faunal Diversity in India by : Krishnamoorthy Venkataraman
Download or read book Marine Faunal Diversity in India written by Krishnamoorthy Venkataraman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water, making it an ideal and abundant resource for studying species diversity, faunal communities, and ecosystems. India’s massive coastline (5,044 miles) means it plays a major role in housing these faunal communities. Of the 32 animal phyla, 15 are represented in India’s marine ecosystem, covering more than 15,000 species. Marine and coastal ecosystems of India provide supporting services in the form of wide range of habitats. Major ecosystems such as estuaries, mangroves, coral reefs, lagoons, seaweeds and sea grasses serve as nurseries for both inshore and offshore fishes and others, many of which are supposed to be commercially exploited. Marine Faunal Diversity in India describes different marine faunal group ranges from sponges, corals, mollusks, crabs, fishes, reptiles, birds, marine mammals, mangrove fauna and tsunami impact on marine faunal diversity. The chapters, written by reputed experts in their respective fields, illustrate diversity and distribution of marine faunal communities. Key aspects of the ecology and conservation of this important ecosystem are also discussed. Marine Faunal Diversity in India provides marine biologists and related researchers with access to the latest research and field studies from this major region. Provides the latest field research on marine faunal diversity throughout the vast and species-rich Indian region Brings together expertise from top marine biology researchers in the country Covers a diverse array of aquatic environments, including coastal and island areas Discusses conservation ecology of marine faunal groups

The topics presented in this volume reflect the diversity of studies on bryozoa with authors from 18 countries. They include investigations in seven thematic areas: ecology and life strategies; recent and fossil faunas of Australia and New Zealand; past and present bryozoans from both Antarctic and Arctic seas; geology and palaeontology of bryozoans from Eurasia and North America; fresh water bryozoans around the world; fossil bryozoans of the Mediterranean and Tethyan realms and evolution and diversity of recent species. This volume represents the newest advances made in bryozoological studies during the last three years, and makes a significant contribution to the literature.

Book Synopsis Stylasteridae (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Anthoathecata) of the New Caledonian Region by : Stephen D. Cairns
Download or read book Stylasteridae (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Anthoathecata) of the New Caledonian Region written by Stephen D. Cairns and published by French National Museum Natural History. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos is a series dedicated to the inventory and description of the deep-sea fauna of the world, with special emphasis on their most extensive--but remote and least-explored--habitats: the Indo-West Pacific. Growing out of marine expeditions undertaken by the French National Museum of Natural History and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, the series continues to present many new, strange, and sometimes colorful invertebrates. The present volume presents results from recent expeditions within the New Caledonian Exclusive Economic Zone, reporting ninety-eight species (including fifty-seven new species) of corals from the Stylasteridae family and one new calcified species of hydrozoa from the family Hydractiniidae. Including numerous seamounts, submarine ridges, and small islands, New Caledonia's deep-sea benthos are ideal habitat for stylasterids, making it the most species-rich marine region in the world for this taxon.
