This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time seems ripe for a critical compendium of that segment of the biological universe we call viruses. Virology, as a science, having passed only recently through its descriptive phase of naming and num bering, has probably reached that stage at which relatively few new truly new-viruses will be discovered. Triggered by the intellectual probes and techniques of molecular biology, genetics, biochemical cytology, and high resolution microscopy and spectroscopy, the field has experienced a genuine information explosion. Few serious attempts have been made to chronicle these events. This comprehensive series, which will comprise some 6000 pages in a total of about 18 volumes, represents a commitment by a large group of active investigators to analyze, digest, and expostulate on the great mass of data relating to viruses, much of which is now amorphous and disjointed, and scattered throughout a wide literature. In this way, we hope to place the entire field in perspective, and to develop an invalu able reference and sourcebook for researchers and students at all levels. This series i~ designed as a continuum that can be entered anywhere, but which also provides a logical progression of developing facts and integrated concepts.

Book Synopsis Novel Diarrhoea Viruses by : Gregory R. Bock
Download or read book Novel Diarrhoea Viruses written by Gregory R. Bock and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently a neglected disease syndrome, diarrhea is responsible for many millions of infant deaths in developing countries. The result of a 1987 symposium, this volume reflects advances in the aetiology of diarrhea while addressing such puzzling problems as the difficulty of growing viruses in a controlled setting. The volume is deliberately restricted to so-called ``novel'' diarrhea viruses and is not concerned with ``classical'' rotaviruses, which have formed the basis of previous symposia. Articles concentrate on: atypical rotaviruses; the enteric adenoviruses; small round viruses such as astroviruses, caliciviruses and Norwalk virus; and the Berne and Breda viruses, suggested as a new family Toroviridae. The contributions come from an interdisciplinary mix of virologists (both human and veterinary), epidemiologists, molecular biologists, and pathologists.

Book Synopsis Viral Diarrheas of Man and Animals by : Linda J. Saif
Download or read book Viral Diarrheas of Man and Animals written by Linda J. Saif and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-12-31 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains valuable contemporary information and illustrations on widespread and common enteric viral infections. Critically reviewed are enteric viruses which cause diarrhea in man and animals. Attention is given to rotaviruses, adenoviruses, coronaviruses, toroviruses, Norwalk agent, parvoviruses and other small round viruses. The book describes the morphologic, physiochemical and antigenic properties of the viruses. It reviews the means of detecting and cultivating these viruses. Also considered are pertinent data on the epidemiology of these infections and potential means of control. This publication presents invaluable information for researchers and students in human and veterinary medicine and virology.
Book Synopsis Atlas Of Plant Viruses by : Robert G. Francki R.I.B; Milne
Download or read book Atlas Of Plant Viruses written by Robert G. Francki R.I.B; Milne and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assembles a comprehensive collection of plant virus electron micrographs of good quality, offers a consistent treatment, and backs the visual data with a consistent and comprehensive text. Although this book is primarily about the structure of virus particles and infected cells, the results of biochemical experiments are referred too when relevant, so that the virus particles described appear as part of a replicating complex. Similarly, infected cells are portrayed as active rather than static structures.

Book Synopsis Arenaviruses by : Michael, B.A. Oldstone
Download or read book Arenaviruses written by Michael, B.A. Oldstone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. B. A. OLDSTONE Viruses are generally studied either because they cause significant human, animal or plant disease or for their utility as materials to probe a basic phenomenon in biology, chemistry, genetics or molecular biology. Arenaviruses are unusually interesting in that they occupy both of these categories. Arenaviruses cause severe human diseases known primarily as the hemor rhagic fevers occurring in South and Latin America (Bolivia: Machupo virus and Argentina: Junin virus) and in Africa (Lassa virus). Because such viruses produce profound disability and may kill the persons they infect, they are a source of economic hardship in the countries where they are prevalent. Further, they provide new problems for health care personnel owing to the narrowing of the world as visitors from many countries increasingly travel to and from these endemic areas. In addition, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) can infect humans worldwide, although the illness is most often less disabling than those elicited by other arenaviruses. Yet LCMV is likely of greater concern to non-arena-virologists and experimentalists using tissue culture or animals, i. e. , workers in molecular biology, cancer research, virology, immunobiology, etc. , because normal appearing cultured cells or tissues and animals used for research may be persistently infected with LCMV without manifesting clinical disease or cytopathology and transmit that infection to laboratory workers (reviewed OWSTONE and PETERS 1978). For example, HINMAN et al.
