Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newfoundland and Labrador are like two uneasy stepsisters, each with its own distinct identity, trying to share a common house. Using original research, including personal interviews, and drawing on his forty-year association with Labrador, Bill Rompkey explores this relationship in the context of the region's unique racial, geographical, political, and social history. Rompkey charts the rise of Labrador as a giant in Canada's near north. He looks at the impact of the region's vast natural resources, which includes the recently discovered nickel mine at Voisey's Bay, the largest in the world, and Ramah chert, a choice stone the Aboriginals traded thousands of years ago. The Story of Labrador is also the story of Innuit caribou hunters and people of the seal, French fishermen and Basque whalers, settlers, traders, and absentee governors. It is the story of great Canadian construction projects like the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway, the rich iron ore operations at Labrador City and Wabush, and Chuchill Fall, which was the largest hydro project in the world when it was created.

A rich cast of characters--hailing from Britain, America, Canada and Newfoundland--battle it out for the prize of the resource-rich, financially solvent, militarily strategic island. The twists and turns are as dramatic as any spy novel and extremely surprising, since the "official" version of Newfoundland history has held for over fifty years almost without question. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In over 220 drawings and photographs, Robert Mellin presents the development of architecture in the decades immediately following Newfoundland's 1949 union with Canada. Newfoundland's wholehearted embrace of modern architecture in this era affected planning as well as the design of cultural facilities, commercial and public buildings, housing, recreation, educational facilities, and places of worship, and Premier Joseph Smallwood often relied on modern architecture to demonstrate the progress made by his administration. Mellin explores the links between Smallwood and modern architecture, revealing how Smallwood guided the development of numerous architectural projects. He also looks at the work of two innovative local architects, Frederick A. Colbourne and Angus J. Campbell, showing how their architecture was influenced by their life-long interest in art. The first comprehensive work on an important period of architectural development in urban and rural Newfoundland, Newfoundland Modern complements Mellin's award-winning book on the outport of Tilting, Fogo Island.
Download or read book Future Possible written by and published by . This book was released on 2020-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you begin to write an art history and what are the vital questions to ask? Which marks are most prominent in the visual culture of a particular place, and which are nearly invisible? In Future Possible (a riff on an Andy Jones monologue about how Newfoundlanders talk about their future, an attitude which he describes as "Future possible, possibly horrible"), Mireille Eagan and writers and artists such as Heather Igloliorte, Lisa Moore, Andy Jones, and Craig Francis Power navigate the tangled histories and cultures of Newfoundland and Labrador to investigate the visual output and to write the narrative that it has created. The result is an ambitious volume, arising from a two-part exhibition of the same name at The Rooms, that provides a multi-vocal, multi-faceted history spanning pre- and post-Confederation Newfoundland. Lavishly illustrated with 180 images of art and objects from the province's visual history, Future Possible features essays by curators and artists on topics such as pre-Confederation art; contemporary art, craft, and Indigenous culture; and outsider and folk art. This intriguing volume places artifacts from the province's history and work by iconic Newfoundland and Labrador artists such as David Blackwood and Helen Parsons Shepherd in conversation with works by contemporary artists like Jordan Bennett and Kym Greeley. Together they explore how history is told and retold through objects and images and how these objects and images, and the power structures that preserve them, define an understanding of place.

Book Synopsis Managed Annihilation by : Dean Bavington
Download or read book Managed Annihilation written by Dean Bavington and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Newfoundland and Labrador cod fishery was once the most successful commercial fishery in the world. When it collapsed in 1992, many pointed to failures in management, such as uncontrolled harvesting, as likely culprits. Managed Annihilation makes the case that the idea of natural resource management itself was the problem. The collapse occurred when the fisheries were state-managed and still, two decades later, there is no recovery in sight. Although the collapse raised doubts among policy-makers about their ability to understand and control nature, their ultimate goal of control through management has not wavered and has been transferred from wild fish to fishermen and farmed cod.

Book excerpt: This book is the first full-length volume to offer acomprehensive introduction to the English spoken in Britain's oldestoverseas colony, and, since 1949, Canada's youngest province. Within NorthAmerica, Newfoundland and Labrador English is a highly distinctive speechvariety. It is known for its generally conservative nature, having retainedclose ties with its primary linguistic roots, the traditional speech ofsouthwestern England and southern Ireland. It is also characterised by ahigh degree of regional and social variation. Over the past half century, the region has experienced substantial social, economic and cultural change. This is reflected linguistically, as younger generations of Newfoundlandersand Labradorians increasingly align themselves with 'mainland' NorthAmerican norms. The volume includes:*An accessible description of thephonological, grammatical, lexical and discourse features of thisvariety*Treatment of regional speech variation within the province, and itshistorical sources*Discussion of the social underpinnings of ongoinglanguage change *Language samples from both traditional and contemporaryspeakers*A survey of published work on Newfoundland and Labrador Englishfrom earlier centuries to the present day.
