Book Synopsis Fareham Revisited by : Michael Stephenson
Download or read book Fareham Revisited written by Michael Stephenson and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fareham Revisited started out as a poem, which Michael Stephenson was inspired to write when he was reflecting on how much his home town had changed since the 1950s and 1960s. The poem and its sentiments struck a chord with so many people that he decided to write a book about Fareham that would evoke more of these memories. The book was privately published in 2004. This new revised and expanded edition will delight anyone who remembers the town in its heyday - and will also intrigue newcomers. Part-memoir and part-history, Fareham Revisited perfectly captures the allure of the shops and cafés along the ‘Golden Mile', the alleyways or ‘drokes', the old cottages, the market with its livestock, the coal barges at the Quay and the well-known characters, including dairy boss Tom Parker who drove around Fareham in a four-horse-power carriage, though his milkmen still used the horse-and-cart. For bus and railway enthusiasts this, too, is the perfect book, as the author casts an expert eye on the bus companies that plied their trade in Fareham, with their distinctive livery, and remembers the last days of steam trains, of which he had a privileged view, as the house in which his family lived was next to the railway line.

Book Synopsis This Whispering in Our Hearts Revisited by : Henry Reynolds
Download or read book This Whispering in Our Hearts Revisited written by Henry Reynolds and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'How is it our minds are not satisfied? What means this whispering in the bottom of our hearts?' Listening to the whispering in his own heart, Henry Reynolds was led into the lives of remarkable and largely forgotten white humanitarians who followed their consciences and challenged the prevailing attitudes to Indigenous people. His now-classic book The Whispering in Our Hearts constructed an alternative history of Australia through the eyes of those who felt disquiet and disgust at the brutality of dispossession. These men and women fought for justice for Indigenous people even when doing so left them isolated and criticised by their fellow whites. The unease of these humanitarians about the morality of white settlement has not dissipated and their legacy informs current debates about reconciliation between black and white Australia. Revisiting this history, in this new edition Reynolds brings fresh perspectives to issues we grapple with still. Those who argue for justice, reparation, recognition and a treaty will find themselves in solidarity with those who went before. But this powerful book shows how much remains to be done to settle the whispering in our hearts. 'No other historian can match Henry Reynolds' impact on Australians' understanding of their frontier history and its troubled inheritance.' - Mark McKenna
Book Synopsis Art in a City Revisited by : Bryan Biggs
Download or read book Art in a City Revisited written by Bryan Biggs and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text, reissued to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the City of Liverpool, was originally published in 1967. It is a milestone in the examination of urban arts movements and also provides the starting point for looking at art in Liverpool from the 1960s to the present day and beyond. Based on a survey commissioned by the Bluecoat Society of Arts, the author did something that had never before been done for a single city, and arguably has never been done since. He surveyed the history of the visual arts in the city, looked at the cultural and institutional environment in which they developed, and asked the people of Liverpool how they viewed the visual arts in Liverpool - both in terms of public art and art in enclosed spaces. Willett saw a place with strong traditions in the visual arts, with new developments associated with the city's emergence in the 1960s as a centre for music and poetry. Willett concluded with an agenda for the development of art in Liverpool, and the spirit of this imbued much of the Bluecoat's work in the decades following publication. Revised with a new introduction Art in a City is a marker for the history of the visual arts in Liverpool.
