Book Synopsis Easier Said Than Done: A Life in Sport by : Alan Wilkins
Download or read book Easier Said Than Done: A Life in Sport written by Alan Wilkins and published by Roli Books Private Limited. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turning adversity on its head he embarked upon a career in broadcasting that began in South Africa with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), before returning to Cardiff in September 1987 to anchor BBC Wales’ portfolio of prime time sports programs. By the mid-1990s Alan had gone freelance and, following the end of apartheid, was reunited with the SABC to cover South Africa’s return to world sport with the 1994 cricket tour to England and the 1995 Rugby World Cup. He also began what would become a long association with Singapore-based ESPN Star Sports (ESS) by commentating on the 1996 Indian cricket tour of England. By 1997 Alan had joined the ESS commentary team in India for the One Day International series between India and Sri Lanka where he was part of the commentary team, with Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Harsha Bhogle and Geoffrey Boycott, otherwise known as A Few Good Men. In February 2000 he re-located to Singapore to work for ESS and for almost 16 years enjoyed broadcasting cricket, golf, rugby, tennis and a host of other sports across the Indian sub-continent. A return home to Wales in 2015 has reignited Alan’s love for rugby but as you’ll read in Easier Said Than Done, his love of sport means the shape or size of the ball is not an issue.
Download or read book Believe in Magic written by Robin Turner and published by White Rabbit. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Heavenly is more than a record label, it's the absolute nectar of all that's brilliant in the culture of these island. I love the shit out of them and everything they stand for.' Irvine Welsh BELIEVE IN MAGIC tells the story of Heavenly Recordings in thirty vignettes, photography and ephemera, all of which relate to landmark records, moments and characters in the label's first three decades. A label responsible for creating satellite communities of fans around the world and at all the major festivals, Heavenly was set up by Jeff Barrett in 1990 after several years working for Factory and Creation as the acid house revolution was in full swing; early releases set the tone and tempo for the mood of the decade to come - their first single was produced by perhaps the most revered acid house DJ of them all, Andrew Weatherall; and this was quickly followed by era-defining singles from Saint Etienne, Flowered Up and Manic Street Preachers, music which perhaps captures the flavour of the early '90s better than any other. Heavenly was always tuned to an aesthetic that was sensitive to the anarchic spirt of the times; defiantly eclectic with a radar set to taste and a never-ending commitment to discovering new talent. In 1994 they set up The Heavenly Sunday Social, which became one of the most influential and mythologised clubs in recent British history, where the Chemical Brothers - then the Dust Brothers - made their name. For thirteen weeks, it was the hottest nightclub on the planet. For 180 demented acolytes in a basement room below the Albany pub. Over nearly 200 releases in thirty years Heavenly have consistently produced some of the most exciting music across all genres, and this book collects rare artwork and wild anecdotal evidence into a celebration of a label that is one of the most beloved institutions on the independent landscape. BELIEVE IN MAGIC includes contributions from Manic Street Preachers, Beth Orton, Doves, Don Letts, Edwyn Collins, Confidence Man, Mark Lanegan, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.

Book Synopsis Nailed to History: The Story of Manic Street Preachers by : Martin Power
Download or read book Nailed to History: The Story of Manic Street Preachers written by Martin Power and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manic Street Preachers have established themselves as one the UK's most enduring, intelligent and credible rocks groups, but that quest for greatness has been a difficult, sometimes torturous path; a path which one of their number – the gifted and troubled Richley Edwards – abandoned for destinations still unknown. Nailed To History traces the slow yet inexorable climb of the South Wales band from their 1980s glam-punk origins, critically derided as 'Generation Terrorists', to their current position as respected art-rock intellectuals - a fact underlined by 2009's award-winning ‘A Journal For Plague Lovers’. This Omnibus Enhanced edition now includes a multimedia discography, charting every album and single release the band has made through a timeline of music videos and album art. Author Martin Power also examines the life and complex personality of Edwards, whose highly politicised, morally disquieting wordplay defined much of the Manics' early appeal - his personal demons writ large across 1994's dark masterwork ‘The Holy Bible’. Edwards' evermore extreme behaviour culminated in his sad, strange disappearance in February, 1995. A story of honour and enduring friendship, of 'culture, alienation, boredom' and despair, Nailed To History examines the Manic Street Preachers’ musical output and the personalities that make them an enduring artistic and political force.
