Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newark and Its Leading Business Men An insurance company that has been in existence for nearly half a century, must have made a record sufficiently broad and comprehensive to show conclusively what its methods and deserts are, and when we see so old-established a company rapidly increasing its business among the most intelligent classes in the community every year, the natural inference is that its record must be equal to the best. It is unnecessary, therefore, to eulogize the New York Life Insurance Company, for since its incorporation in 1845 it has steadily increased in popularity, and now holds a leading position among similar organizations throughout the coun try. Mr. James S. Edwards, Cashier, has held the position of cashier for the State agency for New Jersey since 1884, and those wishing detailed information concerning the methods and resources of the company should make appii cation at his office, No. 781 Broad street, for they will be most courteously received, and will be given every facility to become familiar with the facts in the case. Mr. Edwards is a native of Sussex county, N. J., and served nine months in the Army of the Potomac, during one of the most event ful periods of the war. He is a re51dent of Irvington and is very widely known throughout this section of the State. He was collector of taxes for three years and receiver of taxes for two years, for the township of Clinton. Having made a study of life insurance matters as well as having had practical experience in the business, he is thoroughly well informed in regard to its many details, and is in a position to give valuable counsel to those uncertain as to which form of policy is best adapted to their needs, so that such of our readers as are intending to insure their lives, would best serve their own interests by giving him a cail. In the year 1885, Henry W. Baldwin Esq., was ap ointed by the com pany General Manrger for the State. R. Baldwin has his main office in the Boreel building, 115 Broadway, New York. Under his skillful and energetic management and matchless talent for handling agents, the increase of business of the New York Life has simply been marvelous. Below will be found a summary of the forty-sixth annual report of the company. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leading Businessmen of New Haven As one gazes at the massive sides of East or West Rock, wonder at their abrupt termination naturally arises. At a period in the world's history, when its crust as yet had not had time to cool, parts of it were thinner than the rest. Through these spots the melted rock beneath, bursting out, often rose to a considerable height. The sand stone crust over the territory now occupied by East and West Rocks was displaced by huge masses of melted trap, pushed up by mighty volcanic action. Thus these great monuments of an unknown age were formed. After the volcanic period, this section of North America lay for centuries under a vast ice field, such as, on a smaller scale, are seen today in Greenland. Marvellous transition - from heat beyond our power to imagine, and universal agitation, to the calm and chill of a continent covered by mountains of ice. But so the world was tempered. Massive glaciers moved slowly over this region, and dropped piece by piece, in the shape of icebergs, into the sea, as they do at the poles today. When their appointed work was finished, vegetation, animal life, and man followed' in due season. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Leading Business Men of Willimantic and Colchester These words apply with special force to the borough of Willimantic, for the con centration 'of manufacturing enterprises at that point, and the zeal and ability with which they have been carried on, have not only arrested the decline of Windham which at one time was rapidly going on and was attended by the removal of the county seat to Brooklyn - but have made that town the richest and the first in population of any in the county. Of course, Windham Green - the old shire town - is not what it was. Gradually but surely her business interests have been abandoned or transferred to Willimantic, her powers and privileges have been greatly diminished and the reins of government have been given over to younger and stronger hands, until now she is in much the same position as an old and dignified matron who has relinquished to her sturdy children the duties she once performed so well herself. Although very old, she is by no means unattractive, on the contrary no more pleasant village can be found in the State, and some of her most distinguished sons have returned to her at the close of their active careers, while many visit her every summer and enjoy the pure air, beautiful scenery, delightful drives, and historic associations of the old town. Many of the leading business men of Pittsburg had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold Of their career. They were introduced to the broom, and spent the first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of a business education. But if by Chance the professional sweeper is absent any morn ing the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. The other day a fond fashionable mother in Michigan asked a young man Whether he had ever seen a young lady sweep in a room so grandly as her Priscilla. He said no, he never had, and the mother was gratified beyond measure, but then said he, after a pause, What I should like to see her do is sweep out a room. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is not even one road, but many pathways, each of which may be followed across the great field of life, if entered by the type of human character adapted to it. The types are varied, and often they are blended.. Any profitable study of them, however, can be best performed by selecting a few distinct and marked examples. This has been attempted in a series of brief character sketches of eminently successful careers, each emphasizing some domi nant trait. It has been deemed well to employ the portraits of the living as well as of those whose work is finished. It is somewhat like a gallery, therefore, in which are presented like nesses of the warrior, the statesman, the diplo matist, the artist, the pioneer, the adventurer, the inventor, the explorer, the organizer, the foreseer, and other types of business men whose success is beyond dispute. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leading Business Men of Marlboro, Hudson, So: Framingham, Natick, and Vicinity; Embracing Also Saxonville and Cochituate Nearly 250 years have elapsed since the quaintly-worded petition was presented which resulted in the granting of the tract of land from which the present town of Marlborough was to be formed, and yet between the lines of that petition may be found unmistakable proof that human nature is much the same in all ages and among all peoples. The petitioners were thirteen prominent citizens of Sudbury and evidently believed in the adage unto him that hath shall be given, for among the reasons they give why their prayer should be granted are the following: "God hath been pleased to increase our children, which are now divers of them grown to man's estate, and wee, many of us, grown into years, so as wee should bee glad to see them settled before the Lord take us away from hence, as also God having given us some considerable cattle, so that we are so straightened that we cannot 80 comfortably subsist as could bee desired; and some of us having taken some pains to view the country, we have found a place which lyeth westward, about eight miles from Sudbury, which wee conceive might bee comfortable for our subsistence. They asked for a tract eight miles square but were given one about six miles square, containing 29, 419 acres. This grant was made May 14, 1656, and September 25 of the same year the first meeting of the proprietors was held. Their plantation was called Whipsufferage, this odd name being of Indian origin, or rather a corruption of the Indian Whip-suppcricke, the title of an adjacent hill. In November, 1660, there were set off and confirmed to their proprietors thirty-eight house-lots, among which were one for the minister and one for the smith; the rest of the land being left subject to future grants and being known as cow commons. The town was incorporated May 31, 1660, being named Marlborow in honor of the English town of the same name. It is supposed that this title was chosen because some of the early settlers came from that town but there is no certainty on this point, although it is evident that it could not, like the English Marlborow, be so called on account of the abundance of marl in the vicinity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Leading Business Men of Norwich and Vicinity, Embracing Greeneville and Preston Mason (the future founder of Norwich), the Monhegans held a general claim to all this region. In. 1643 one of the most famous of Indian battles occurred near Yantic Falls, between the Narragam setts and the Monhegans. By a wily stratagem Uncas, the chief of the latter, totally routed the Narragansetts, one tradition being that a party of them was driven headlong over the precipice above the Falls, and dashed among the foaming rocks. Miantonomo, the great chief of the Narragansetts, was also captured at the spot now known as Sachem's Plain. Here a mound of victory was raised by the Monhegans, and after the questionable justice of the English had sanctioned the execution of the captured prince, his lamenting people, adding each a stone or two. In memory of their vanquished chieftain in their frequent passings this way, made quite a large monument'on this spot. Though this mound has been swept away with the years, a small granite monument erected here in 1841 by citizens of Norwich, perpetuates the ren'ien'ibrance of this early battle and its vanquished chief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journeys to the Homes of Great Business Men: Stephen Girard The new cabin-boy was astonished that one so young could be captain of a ship; he was also astonished that a person who gave orders in a gentle voice could have them executed. Later, he learned that the men whose orders are always obeyed do not talk loudly nor in guttural. This first boyish captain taught Girard a splendid lesson - to moderate both manner and voice and be effective. Of that first voyage, about all we know is that the boy Slept on a pile Of gunny sacks; that the captain let him read from the Philosophical Dictionary; that be polished the bright work until it served as a mirror; that the captain smiled his approval, and that the boy, short and swart, with bullet head, followed him with one eye and worshiped him as Deity Jr 2' Men do not succeed by chance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Business-Men: Short Accounts of the Rise of Famous Firms The field is so wide - new firms every day pushing to the front, sometimes to the disadvantage of the old and long-standing, and in a manner which V1vidly illustrates the push and restless eagerness of the present century - that it has been found very difficult to select. Two ideas have, however, been, as we may say, guiding ones: First - to present various instances of success in different and contrasted industries; and, next, in no case to present alongside each other businesses which could in the most remote way be regarded as competing ones. If the wideness of the field has been felt to be Oppressive, in the sense of the limited View that in one such volume as the present can be taken of it, this compensatory reflection arises that if the public give the necessary encouragement, there is still an ample store to draw on for materials for further volumes. With regard to the illustrations in the volume, it may be well to explain that the original intention was to present portraits of the founders of the firms, the rise and progress of which have been traced; but it was found impossible to carry out this idea completely, owing to the fact that portraits of some of them were not in existence.
