Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosive growth in volume and varieties of data generated by the seemingly endless arrays of digital systems and applications is rapidly elevating the importance of being able to utilize data; in fact, data analytic literacy is becoming as important now, at the onset of the Digital Era, as rudimentary literacy and numeracy were throughout the Industrial Era. And yet, what constitutes data analytic literacy is poorly understood. To some, data analytic literacy is the ability to use basic statistics, to others it is data science ‘light’, and to still others it is just general familiarity with common data analytic outcomes. Exploring the scope and the structure of rudimentary data analytic competencies is at the core of this book which takes the perspective that data analytics is a new and distinct domain of knowledge and practice. It offers application-minded framing of rudimentary data analytic competencies built around conceptually sound and practically meaningful processes and mechanics of systematically transforming messy and heterogeneous data into informative insights. Data Analytic Literacy is meant to offer an easy-to-follow overview of the critical elements of the reasoning behind basic data manipulation and analysis approaches and steps, coupled with the commonly used data analytic and data communication techniques and tools. It offers an all-inclusive guide to developing basic data analytic competencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a ‘good’ outcome? In relation to others, and in relation to the past? Commonly associated with the ideas of benchmarking and baselining, comparative assessment is an important part of organizational management, but this broadly defined undertaking lacks clear conceptual framing and methodological foundations. At the same time, the readily available transactional data make robust tracking and measurement possible at an unprecedented scale, but also accentuate the impact of assessment paradox: To be truly meaningful, exact magnitudes-expressed values often need to be ‘translated’ into qualitative, assessment-laden categories, but that task is impeded by lack of established approaches for doing so. Inspired by these observations, Probabilistic Benchmarking frames the notions of benchmarking and baselining as two complementary but distinct mechanisms of comparative assessment that make use of informational contents of organizational data to contribute unbiased, systematic, and consistent evaluation of outcomes or states of interest. In that general context, this book provides much-needed conceptual and methodological clarity to guide construction and use of benchmarks and baselines, and re-casts the idea of assessment standards in the context of data-derived estimates, to better align the practice of comparative assessment with the emerging realities of the Age of Data. This pioneering research-based but application-minded book bridges the gap between theory and practice. It will greatly benefit professionals, business students and others interested in the broad domain of organizational assessment.

Book excerpt: Accounting for Construction follows on from Measuring Construction, edited by the same team. It extends the coverage of some of the material in the first volume and expands the range of related topics to include, inter alia, shadow economies, accounting for informal construction and the treatment of the built environment sector in national accounts. Taken together, the two volumes collate a range of topics that are only addressed, if addressed at all, in occasional academic papers and the publications of bodies such as national statistical offices and the World Bank. Accounting for Construction presents international examples from the UK, Australia and New Zealand and from both academic and professional contributors. This book is essential reading for all researchers and professionals interested in construction economics, construction management, and anyone interested in how the construction industry affects the global economy in ways previously under-represented in the literature.

However, the fast pace of technological innovation, globalization, and the volatile stock market have made IT an increasingly risky business for some employees more than for others. This volume examines how women and older workers in small IT companies are disproportionately vulnerable to economic uncertainty within their industry. Drawing on original survey and interview data, the authors explore how gender and age affect work and workplace culture to produce a fresh contribution to the literature on inequality.
