Book excerpt: Excerpt from New York City and the Wanamaker Store New York, with its population of nearly six million residents within the city limits, with almost an equal number of people residing within two hours' ride of the City Hall, and with considerably over a quarter of a million out-of-town visitors daily registered at its hotels - is a city of big accomplishments and big problems. As will be' shown later, New York City is not only the largest organized municipality in the world, but it now has more people than London residing within the Metropolitan district. In New York are found the greatest buildings, bridges, transit systems, educational, police, fire and health departments; the greatest libraries, public and semi-public hospitals and charitable institu tions, and system of water supply; the greatest foreign population; the greatest business and manufacturing enterprises; and the greatest foreign commerce coming into the finest harbor in the world; and the greatest problems. It is a great magnet which attracts the best men and women of the day - the men and women who make history and accomplish things worth while. The very environment spells accomplishment.of New York far outranks the administrative City and County of London. By administrative city is meant the territory within the city limits, which is governed by one municipality. In New York, the administrative city includes the territory within the five boroughs of which the Mayor is the executive. Administrative London includes the corporation of the City of London, and the twenty-eight metropolitan boroughs within the County of London, which comes under the jurisdiction of the London County Council. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out of Mulberry Street: Stories of Tenement Life in New York City Since I wrote How the Other Half Lives I have been asked many times upon what basis of experience, of fact, I built that ac count of life in New York tenements. These stories contain the answer. They are from the daily grist of the police hopper in Mul berry street, at which I have been grinding for twenty years. They are reprinted from the columns of my newspaper, and from the magazines as a contribution to the discussion of the lives and homes of the poor, which in recent years has done much to better their lot, and is yet to do much more when we have all come to understand each (fiher. In this discussion only facts are of value, and these stories are true. In the few instances in which I have taken the ordering of events into my own hands, it is chiefly their se quence with which I have interfered. The facts themselves remain as I found them. J. A. R. It has a population of about four millions and a half, and gains about a hundred thousand a year. A very large propor tion of its population are newcomers, who pour in both by sea and by land. Most of those who come on the land side are Americans who know the language, customs and some of the laws of the country. Those who come by sea a great and continuous stream know as a rule neither our language, laws nor habits, and it is one of the steady occupations and duties of New York to teach them. New York's four millions include a select but respectable company of persons who were born in New York of native American parents, a squad, probably larger, of persons American born of American-born parents who came to New York when more or less grown up, another considerable group of the American-born descendants of foreign-born parents, and a large company of the foreign born. Book excerpt: Excerpt from People We Pass: Stories of Life Among the Masses of New York City The first seven of these short stories were published in harper's magazine. The one called Low Dutch and High is here put forth for the first time. While the stories were being published in the magazine, one critic quite honestly declared that he - or she - questioned the extent of the author's familiarity with the life he was treating. On the other hand, a talented friend wrote that The only trouble with the stories is that it seems as though the author must have at one time lived in a tenement, else he could not describe tenement scenes as he does. The truth does not hide behind either the criticism nor the praise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The noble River Hudson, or North River, flows along its north west side, while the East River, which unites with the majestic Long Island Sound, waters the south-east border. It is thought that no place in the world, embraces so many natural advantages for commerce and trade, as the port of new-york. None, perhaps, is in a more flourishing condition, than it is at this time. A great many buildings have been recently erected, and we may behold whole squares and magnificent structures going up in various parts of the city. Vessels from almost every commercial country, may be seen in its port; and the steamboats, m the summer are numerous, and ply in every direction. By great labor and expense, the numerous hills in that part of the Island on which the city is building, have been leveled, and valleys and swamps have been filled up. Only a few years ago, there was a lake of fresh water, called the Collect, in the middle of the city, which is now firm land; and spacious streets and stately buildings, now occupy a place where the boys of new-york formerly spent many hours in skating! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Behind Manhattan Gables: A Story of New Amsterdam 1663-1664 To all readers interested in American, English, and Dutch history, let me say this prefatory word. I have had a special purpose in writing this book, though in the form of a story. It is well to go back to beginnings, the seed of things. I am to tell about a seed so very small - the seed, the beginning of a grand city. One autumn morning, from the deck of a Sound steamer, after passing beneath Brooklyn Bridge, I looked for Trinity Church spire. There was the church at the head of Wall Street. The little fragment of New York between Wall Street and the Battery was New Amsterdam - New York in seed. How short a walk the Dutchman of 1663 took to go around the beloved borders of his island city! With profound interest I have gone through some of the old streets of colonial days still in existence. I walked along Bridge Street, or De Brug Straat of olden time. I shut my eyes and imagined that I saw the Katryne and Geertruyd of this story, in their picturesque Dutch dress, coming to meet me. In Broad Street, once De Heeren Graft, I thought of the canal that pierced it, a fond memorial of old Holland. I looked down and saw in fancy the clumsy barges bringing cargoes from vessels in the stream. I passed Stone Street, and the next must be the old-time Beaver Street, I said, De Bever Graft. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apaches of New York These stories are true in name and time and place. None of them in its incident happened as far away as three years ago. They were written to show you how the other half live - in New York. I had them direct from the veracious lips of the police. The gangsters themselves contributed sundry details. You will express amazement as you read that they carry so slight an element of Sing Sing and the Death Chair. Such should have been no doubt the very proper and lawful climax of more than one of them, and would were it not for what differences subsist between a moral and a legal certainty. The police know many things they cannot prove in court, the more when the question at bay concerns inti mately, for life or death, a society where the snitch is an abomination and to squeal the sin gle great offense. Besides, you are not to forget the politician, who in defense of a valuable repeater palsies police effort with the cold finger of his interference. With apologies to that order, the three links of the Odd Fellows are an example of the policeman, the crim inal and the politician. The latter is the middle link. Book excerpt: How a pioneering merchant blended religion and business to create a unique American shopping experience On Christmas Eve, 1911, John Wanamaker stood in the middle of his elaborately decorated department store building in Philadelphia as shoppers milled around him picking up last minute Christmas presents. On that night, as for years to come, the store was filled with the sound of Christmas carols sung by thousands of shoppers, accompanied by the store’s Great Organ. Wanamaker recalled that moment in his diary, “I said to myself that I was in a temple,” a sentiment quite possibly shared by the thousands who thronged the store that night. Remembered for his store’s extravagant holiday decorations and displays, Wanamaker built one of the largest retailing businesses in the world and helped to define the American retail shopping experience. From the freedom to browse without purchase and the institution of one price for all customers to generous return policies, he helped to implement retailing conventions that continue to define American retail to this day. Wanamaker was also a leading Christian leader, participating in the major Protestant moral reform movements from his youth until his death in 1922. But most notably, he found ways to bring his religious commitments into the life of his store. He focused on the religious and moral development of his employees, developing training programs and summer camps to build their character, while among his clientele he sought to cultivate a Christian morality through decorum and taste. Wanamaker’s Temple examines how and why Wanamaker blended business and religion in his Philadelphia store, offering a historical exploration of the relationships between religion, commerce, and urban life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and illuminating how they merged in unexpected and public ways. Wanamaker's marriage of religion and retail had a pivotal role in the way American Protestantism was expressed and shaped in American life, and opened a new door for the intertwining of personal values with public commerce.
