Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “It’s undeniably thrilling to find words for our strangest feelings…Koenig casts light into lonely corners of human experience…An enchanting book. “ —The Washington Post A truly original book in every sense of the word, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows poetically defines emotions that we all feel but don’t have the words to express—until now. Have you ever wondered about the lives of each person you pass on the street, realizing that everyone is the main character in their own story, each living a life as vivid and complex as your own? That feeling has a name: “sonder.” Or maybe you’ve watched a thunderstorm roll in and felt a primal hunger for disaster, hoping it would shake up your life. That’s called “lachesism.” Or you were looking through old photos and felt a pang of nostalgia for a time you’ve never actually experienced. That’s “anemoia.” If you’ve never heard of these terms before, that’s because they didn’t exist until John Koenig set out to fill the gaps in our language of emotion. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows “creates beautiful new words that we need but do not yet have,” says John Green, bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars. By turns poignant, relatable, and mind-bending, the definitions include whimsical etymologies drawn from languages around the world, interspersed with otherworldly collages and lyrical essays that explore forgotten corners of the human condition—from “astrophe,” the longing to explore beyond the planet Earth, to “zenosyne,” the sense that time keeps getting faster. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows is for anyone who enjoys a shift in perspective, pondering the ineffable feelings that make up our lives. With a gorgeous package and beautiful illustrations throughout, this is the perfect gift for creatives, word nerds, and human beings everywhere.

Download or read book New Words Self-Defined (Classic Reprint) written by C. Alphonso Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Words Self-Defined Tms book is both less and more than a dictionary. It is less than a dictionary in containing not one formal definition; it is more than a dictionary in its attempt to quote only such sentences as make the meaning of each word stand self-revealed. It is one thing to memorize a definition, quite another to add the word defined at once to your vocabulary of actual use. The sentences here culled will, I believe, enable the reader to take each word or phrase by its handle and to use it, if he so desires. If he does not care to make personal use of these words, it should be remembered that most of them have found their way since 1914 into so many short stories, sketches, novels, news columns, and magazine contributions that a reading knowledge of them is essential to a proper understand ing of current writing. They are not all new words, of course; but, when not new, they have at least been called into newness of service or represent new direc tions of popular interest or scientific research. They have, therefore, it is hoped, a value as material of history apart from their service to the student of language or their more immediate service to the general reader. Book Synopsis A Conflict of Self Interest by : Adrian A. Hankey
Download or read book A Conflict of Self Interest written by Adrian A. Hankey and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self or Soul is an essential energy centred in every living body and is about instinct, species survival and coexistence with all other Life. It is not a belief nor any part of Brain. Brain is the natural manager of the body in which Soul exists. The natural function of Brain is to facilitate Soul-purpose throughout Life. Brain copies or creates beliefs to make everything true or real, and with memory and logic it creates time, space, knowledge and world. Educated Brain tends to deny Self and so creates a greater need for entertainment, exploration, pets and more. Civilization is run entirely by Brains. But that complex process has yet to run for more than a few hundred years without final disaster. The only peoples who have survived for millenia, have done so by depending consistently upon Self, family, home, legend, lore, wisdom, and heritage, most of which are presently being civilly disrespected and ignored. No belief of science, psychology or religion can ever explain or replace any of these. On this finite planet, population increase has become too serious to ignore. Natural increase seems due mostly to cultural stress and ageing. But serious unnatural population increase is now due to religiously enforced non-birth-control amongst poor and ignorant people. Greedy corporations and developers also encourage population expansion which will ultimately cause the collapse of people-species. For survival of people-species, the current civil process must accept a more localized, traditional and cultural Wisdom, not based upon nor necessarily denying science or religion.

Jaillant provides a thorough analysis of the series’ mix of highbrow and popular literature and argues that the availability and low cost of modernist works helped to expand modernism's influence as a literary movement.
