Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Churchmanship and the Principles Upon Which It Was Founded Western Christendom, through the dominating influences of the Church of Rome, during the past thousand years has witnessed the gradual substitution of another type of Christianity for that of apostolic days. In the Apostolic Church itself, a true balance was preserved between the inward or subjective, and the outward or objective, religious life of the Church, and we read that, under the influences of the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Truth, those baptized on the Day of Pentecost continued steadfastly in the Apostles doctrine and fellowship and in the breaking of bread and in prayers. This is a fundamental principle of the religion of Christ. The inward and outward are so bound together in His Incarnation that they are mutually dependent upon one another; nor can the highest spiritual life, which is life in Christ, be fully attained save through their union. Each, without the other, gives rise to an abnormal, one-sided development of religion; and this has been the error into which the Roman Church has fallen. Ans. Iv. P. 250, 13. The certainty I have of the Creed that it was from the Apostles and contains the principles of faith, I ground it not upon Scripture, and yet not upon the infallibility of any present, much less of your, Church, but upon the authority of the ancient Church, and written tradition, which (as Dr. Potter hath proved) give this constant testi mony unto it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if you were to read the New Testament - really read it without denominational filters - read it over and over again. And then what if you were to organize your attempts at such unfiltered reading by subject matter? Well that is what happened to me over a period of almost fifty years, and this is what I have worked to do in these two volumes of Blueprint for a Revolution: Building Upon ALL of The New Testament! What follows is a catechism of my understanding of apostolic Christianity. It is a body of teaching that flows out of taking all of the New Testament texts in a grammatically natural and literal sense: the way we instinctively read all serious literature. Testimony from the earliest Christians is also presented, demonstrating that what those earliest churches taught and lived out was typically identical to what you conclude when you take the New Testament doctrines, commands and promises naturally, literally and consistently. These two volumes are not written with professional Biblical scholars in mind, but rather pastors, seminarians, congregational leaders and other serious students of the Scriptures. I have taught from them for years in parish ministry. The importance of this book does not lie mainly in the specific conclusions of any individual chapter, and certainly not in any of my literally skills at presenting those conclusions. It lies mostly in the juxtaposition of chapters that are often thought to be in conflict with each other only because the traditions that hold to the beliefs in those chapters have been considered to be in conflict with each other. Its importance also lies in the conviction that any congregation that builds upon those chapters will be making a quantum leap in the direction of that sacred and revolutionary movement, that "Kingdom of God," that Jesus brought to the earth!

It is firmly based upon the teaching of the Holy Scriptures, and argues cogently that those teachings never go out of date. It also proposes strongly that the practices of the early church as shown in the New Testament are both obligatory and practicable for all believers today, and indeed until the Lord Jesus comes again. The language of the five chapters is easy to follow, clearly setting out those matters which are important to all who would wish to honour and obey the Word of God in their church gatherings.

Asquith chose him for the bishopric of Lincoln after a long ministry in the slums of Salford and he stood out among the bishops of his time for his radical opinions. He supported the New Liberalism of the turn of the century and was one of the few church leaders who welcomed the rise of the Labour Party. This study traces his life and influence amidst the social and political upheavals of the time.
