Book Synopsis Plane and Solid Geometry by : J.M. Aarts
Download or read book Plane and Solid Geometry written by J.M. Aarts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book on Euclidean geometry that covers the standard material in a completely new way, while also introducing a number of new topics that would be suitable as a junior-senior level undergraduate textbook. The author does not begin in the traditional manner with abstract geometric axioms. Instead, he assumes the real numbers, and begins his treatment by introducing such modern concepts as a metric space, vector space notation, and groups, and thus lays a rigorous basis for geometry while at the same time giving the student tools that will be useful in other courses.

Book Synopsis Nova Stereometria Dolorium Vinariorum / New Solid Geometry of Wine Barrels by : Johannes Kepler

This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johannes Kepler (Weil der Stadt, 1571-Regensburg, 1630) is the famous astronomer and mathematician who discovered the three planetary laws named after him. In 1615 he published the Nova stereometria doliorum vinariorum // New solid geometry of wine barrels, his most important mathematical monograph. It made him a precursor of infinitesimal mathematics. He himself told the reader in the dedication to his two patrons that his second marriage caused him to write this mathematical treatise. When he stocked up with wine barrels in his capacity as head of a new family he was astonished at the way in which the seller used the gauging rod. The man explored all wine barrels with one and the same rod indifferently without paying heed to the shape, and without ratiocination or calculation.Hence Kepler felt obliged to try to lay down, according to geometrical laws, a new foundation for the mathematical certainty of this measurement and to bring to light its fundamentals, if there should be any. To that end he began with a new interpretation of Archimedes's results in plane and solid geometry that was based on indivisibles considered as infinitely small quantities. He could not know that his Greek predecessor had used the same method in his letter to Eratosthenes, known as Approach related to mechanical theorems, rediscovered by Johan L. Heiberg in 1906.Yet, Kepler surpassed the results of his model by his own results. He investigated the volumes of surfaces of rotation like the volumes of apples, lemons, and spindles, that is, he investigated the solid geometry of figures that are closest to conoids and spheroids. But Kepler's treatise is by no means restricted to its role in the prehistory of the calculus. The second part is full of non-trivial, new results concerning the special relations between cylinders and so-called conjugate conical frustums. He demonstrated that the Austrian barrel has the largest volume among all barrels with the same gauging length. Thus the third part explains the use of the gauging rod.The volume presents, along with the original Latin text, the first complete translation of Kepler's monograph into any modern European language, in this case into English. The comprehensive introduction includes a survey of Kepler's life and works and explains the main ideas, methods, and results of this mathematical masterpiece.

Book Synopsis A Mathematical Space Odyssey by : Claudi Alsina
Download or read book A Mathematical Space Odyssey written by Claudi Alsina and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid geometry is the traditional name for what we call today the geometry of three-dimensional Euclidean space. This book presents techniques for proving a variety of geometric results in three dimensions. Special attention is given to prisms, pyramids, platonic solids, cones, cylinders and spheres, as well as many new and classical results. A chapter is devoted to each of the following basic techniques for exploring space and proving theorems: enumeration, representation, dissection, plane sections, intersection, iteration, motion, projection, and folding and unfolding. The book includes a selection of Challenges for each chapter with solutions, references and a complete index. The text is aimed at secondary school and college and university teachers as an introduction to solid geometry, as a supplement in problem solving sessions, as enrichment material in a course on proofs and mathematical reasoning, or in a mathematics course for liberal arts students.--

Book Synopsis Deductive Geometry by : E.A. Maxwell
Download or read book Deductive Geometry written by E.A. Maxwell and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise review examines the geometry of the straight line, circle, plane, and sphere as well as their associated configurations, including the triangle and the cylinder. Aimed at university undergraduates, the treatment is also useful for advanced students at the secondary level. The straightforward approach begins with a recapitulation of previous work on the subject, proceeding to explorations of advanced plane geometry, solid geometry with some reference to the geometry of the sphere, and a chapter on the nature of space, including considerations of such properties as congruence, similarity, and symmetry. The text concludes with a brief account of the elementary transformations of projection and inversion. Numerous examples appear throughout the book.
