Book excerpt: The parity-violating cross-section asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from unpolarized protons has been measured at a four-momentum transfer squared Q2 = 0.624 GeV2 and beam energy Eb = 3.48 GeV to be APV = -23.80 " 0.78 (stat) " 0.36 (syst) parts per million. This result is consistent with zero contribution of strange quarks to the combination of electric and magnetic form factors GEs + 0.517 GMs = 0.003 " 0.010 (stat) " 0.004 (syst) " 0.009 (ff), where the third error is due to the limits of precision on the electromagnetic form factors and radiative corrections. With this measurement, the world data on strange contributions to nucleon form factors are seen to be consistent with zero and not more than a few percent of the proton form factors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the γZ box contribution to the weak charge of the proton. Here, by combining recent parity-violating electron-deuteron scattering data with our current understanding of parton distribution functions, the author shows that one can limit this model dependence. The resulting construction is a robust model of the γγ and γZ structure functions that can also be used to study a variety of low-energy phenomena. Two such cases are discussed in this work, namely, the nucleon’s electromagnetic polarizabilities and quark-hadron duality. By using phenomenological information to constrain the input structure functions, this important but previously poorly understood radiative correction is determined at the kinematics of the parity-violating experiment, QWEAK, to a degree of precision more than twice that of the previous best estimate. A detailed investigation into available parametrizations of the electromagnetic and interference cross-sections indicates that earlier analyses suffered from the inability to correctly quantify their model dependence.

Book Synopsis The Spin Structure of the Proton by : Steven D. Bass
Download or read book The Spin Structure of the Proton written by Steven D. Bass and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main challenges in nuclear and particle physics in the last 20 years has been to understand how the proton''s spin is built up from its quark and gluon constituents. Quark models generally predict that about 60% of the proton''s spin should be carried by the spin of the quarks inside, whereas high energy scattering experiments have shown that the quark spin contribution is small OCo only about 30%. This result has been the underlying motivation for about 1000 theoretical papers and a global program of dedicated spin experiments at BNL, CERN, DESY and Jefferson Laboratory to map the individual quark and gluon angular momentum contributions to the proton''s spin, which are now yielding exciting results. This book gives an overview of the present status of the field: what is new in the data and what can be expected in the next few years. The emphasis is on the main physical ideas and the interpretation of spin data. The interface between QCD spin physics and the famous axial U(1) problem of QCD (eta and etaprime meson physics) is also highlighted. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (159 KB). Contents: Spin Experiments and Data; Dispersion Relations and Spin Sum Rules; g 1 Spin Sum Rules; Fixed Poles; The Axial Anomaly, Gluon topology and g (0) A; Chiral Symmetry and Axial U(1) Dynamics; QCD Inspired Models of the Proton Spin Problem; The Spin-Flavour Structure of the Proton; QCD Fits to g 1 Data; Polarized Quark Distributions; Polarized Glue o g(x, Q 2 ); Transversity; Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Exclusive Processes; Polarized Photon Structure Functions; Conclusions and Open Questions: How Does the Proton Spin?. Readership: Academics, as well as physicists working on particle and nuclear physics at the interface of theory and experiment.

Download or read book Precision Measurements of the Nucleon Strange Form Factors at Q^2 ~ 0.1GeV^2 written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report new measurements of the parity-violating asymmetry A{sub PV} in elastic scattering of 3 GeV electrons off hydrogen and 4He targets with ([theta]{sub lab}) H"6.0{sup o}. The 4He result is A{sub PV} = (+6.40 ± 0.23 (stat) ± 0.12 (syst)) x 10−6. The hydrogen result is A{sub PV} = ( -1.58 ± 0.12 (stat) ± 0.04 (syst)) x 10−6. These results significantly improve constraints on the electric and magnetic strange form factors G{sub E}{sup s} and G{sub M}{sup s}. We extract G{sub E}{sup s} = 0.002 ± 0.014 ± 0.007 at (Q2) = 0.077 GeV2, and G{sub E}{sup s} + 0.09 G{sub M}{sup s} = 0.007 ± 0.011 ± 0.006 at (Q2) = 0.109 GeV2, providing new limits on the role of strange quarks in the nucleon charge and magnetization distributions.

Book excerpt: Parity violation in elastic ep scattering determines the elastic weak neutral current form factors G^Z(sub)E(q^2) and G^Z(sub)M(q^2) which are directly analogous to the familiar electromagnetic elastic form factors. By using the Standard Model of electroweak interactions and invoking strong isospin for the nucleon, the weak neutral current form factors may be expressed in terms of their electromagnetic counterparts and the strange quark vector form factors G^(S)(sub)E(q^2) and G^(S)(sub)M(q^2). Previous authors have argued that it is feasible to measure G^(S)(sub)E(q^2=0) in this way. In this paper, we show one may also measure G^(S)(sub)E(q^2) at finite q^2 in a separate experiment. Within certain models, it should be possible to extract the.
