This book was released on 2006 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Polymers derived from lactide (L, rae and meso) are currently finding numerous applications as biodegradable and biocompatible packaging materials for bulk commodities and drug delivery agents. The physical properties of the polymer much as the rate of hydrolysis, which forms a mechanism for time release of drugs, are dependent upon the microstructure of the polymer. Single-site metal alkoxide catalysts of the form LM(OR) where L = a [beta]-diiminate ligand and M Mg or Zn have proved effective in stereoselective ring opening polymerizations. To this end a new series of compounds LMX have been prepared where L = CH(C[t]BuNC6H3-2,6-[i]Pr2)2, M = Mg, Zn and Sn, and X a potential initiator for ring opening polymerizations of lactide i.e. an amide or alkoxide. A comparison is made with the previously reported complexes where L = CH(CMeNC6H3-2,6-[i]Pr2)2, M=Mg, Zn and Sn, and X=a potential initiator for ring opening polymerizations of lactide i.e. an amide or alkoxide. A comparison is made with the previously reported complexes where L=CH(CMeNC6H3-2,6-[i]Pr2)2.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Biopolyesters written by Wolfgang Babel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living systems synthesize seven different classes of polymers. They provide structure and form for cells and organisms, function as catalysts and energy storage and carry the genetic information. All these polymers possess technically interesting properties. Some of these biopolymers are already used commercially. This special volume of Advances in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology comprises 10 chapters. It gives an overview of the water insoluble biopolyesters, in particular of the microbially synthesized poly-hydroxyalkanoate (PHA) family. It reports the state of the art of metabolism, regulation and genetic background, the latest advances made in genetic optimization of bacteria, "construction" of transgenic plants and in vitro synthesis by means of purified enzymes. Furthermore, it describes relevant technologies and evaluates perspectives concerning increasing the economic viability and competitiveness of PHA and discusses applications in medicine, packaging, food and other fields.

Book Synopsis Cationic Organomagnesium Complexes as Homogeneous Catalysts for the Ring-opening Polymerization of Lactones by : Benjamin John Ireland
Download or read book Cationic Organomagnesium Complexes as Homogeneous Catalysts for the Ring-opening Polymerization of Lactones written by Benjamin John Ireland and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polylactones are biodegradable polymers which may be used as alternatives to conventional plastics and have shown promise in novel medical applications. Industrial production of polylactones requires the use of a catalyst. The work described herein is directed toward the development of novel cationic magnesium-based lactone-polymerization catalysts. These cationic species are produced by alkide abstraction from a neutral precursor; a strategy which has seen only preliminary exploration in the context of lactone polymerization. The target catalyst system features a neutral phosphinimine-derivative ligand structure which was developed and produced specifically for the purpose of lactone polymerization catalysis. Target complexes were obtained by reaction of neutral alkylmagnesium precursors with protonated ligand derivatives. Syntheses and characterization of novel species are described herein. These catalysts are very active in the polymerization of 6-caprolactone, generating high molecular weight polymers in mere minutes under mild conditions. A preliminary study of polymerization catalysis is also reported.

Book Synopsis Biobased Products from Food Sector Waste by : Teresa Cecchi
Download or read book Biobased Products from Food Sector Waste written by Teresa Cecchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, food waste has been used to produce biogas and biofuels, fertilizers, and animal feed. Using it as a feedstock for innovative biorefineries is not only an ethical issue but also a smart application of the circular economy. This book explores the zero-waste concept in the thriving biobased sector, proposing technologies and procedures to meet the sustainable development goals. The volume categorizes food waste sources and proposes an impressive number of high value-added compounds (e.g., platform chemicals, enzymes, nutraceuticals, antioxidants, organic acids, phosphate, bioadsorbents, pectin, solvents, and pigments) that can be obtained in a sequential biocascade, via chemical, biochemical, thermal, and physical technologies. The synthesis of bioplastics from food waste, their copolymerization and blending, as well as the production of biocomposites and bionanocomposite with biofillers from food scraps, are presented: eluding the cost of waste disposal, reducing biobased materials price, and avoiding using edible resources as a starting material for biobased items are the main beneficial peculiarities of the process. The Authors illustrate challenging characteristics of new biobased materials, such as their mechanical and physico-chemical features, their biodegradability, compostability, recyclability, chemical compatibility, and barrier properties. The volume also delves into socioeconomic considerations and environmental concerns related to the upcycling of food waste, as well as the safety and life cycle assessment of biobased products. Finally, the authors address how advances in digital technology can make food waste upcycling a negative-cost process and discuss best practices to practically implement the biorefinery concept. Research gaps and needs are suggested, and recommendations for food waste handling and management during this COVID-19 pandemic are provided.
