Book excerpt: An exquisite, full-color guide to sashiko, a simple Japanese stitching technique that uses stunning patterns to decorate or repair clothing, accessories, and home textiles. Requiring no special equipment other than a sewing needle and thread, Make and Mend introduces the incredibly simple technique of sashiko--a striking hand-sewing method using a running stitch to form pleasing geometric patterns. Sashiko is traditionally used to mend and repair clothing and textiles, but it can just as easily be used to create beautiful, decorative projects for the home. With fifteen projects applying a modern, on-trend aesthetic to this ancient craft, Make and Mend shows readers how to apply sashiko stitching to a variety of craft projects, such as repairing torn jeans, mending a ripped hem, and making decorative pillows, napkins, a tablecloth, and a totebag. Touching on the concepts of beauty in minimalism and resourceful simplicity, as well as a fascination with Japan and Japanese design, this easy and accessible book appeals to both the seasoned maker and total beginner.

Download or read book Double Take written by Jojakim Cortis and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty of the world’s most iconic images, meticulously reproduced in miniature by two Swiss photographers Double Take presents forty astonishingly accurate reconstructions of iconic photographs—ranging from the earliest known to the world’s most expensive. These images have been painstakingly re-created in miniature by two photographers, Jojakim Cortis and Adrian Sonderegger. Inspired by the record auction price of $4.3 million set by Andreas Gursky’s Rhein II in 2011, the duo set themselves a challenge: could they reconstruct that image in their Zürich studio? The photograph they created from a miniature diorama of Rhein II was a success and became a starting point for a larger personal project:a series of photographs of these miniature re-creations the team made themselves, imitating iconic photographs that captured pivotal historical events. A technical tour de force, Double Take asks of image making: can the image ever be trusted? With images showing the reconstruction process, a supporting essay, and an in-depth interview with the photographers, Double Take is for lovers of photography or miniatures—with a twist.

Book Synopsis Miniature Metropolis by : Andreas Huyssen
Download or read book Miniature Metropolis written by Andreas Huyssen and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Europe’s modernizing metropolises offered a sensory experience unlike anything that had come before. Cities became laboratories bubbling with aesthetic experimentation in old and new media, and from this milieu emerged metropolitan miniatures—short prose pieces about the experiences of urban life written for European newspapers. Miniature Metropolis explores the history and theory of this significant but misrecognized achievement of literary modernism. Andreas Huyssen shows how writers from Baudelaire and Kafka to Benjamin, Musil, and Adorno created the miniature to record their reflections of Paris, Brussels, Prague, Vienna, Berlin, and Los Angeles. Contesting photography and film as competing media, the metropolitan miniature sought to capture the visceral feeling of acceleration and compression that defined urban existence. But the form did not merely imitate visual media—it absorbed them, condensing objective and subjective perceptions into the very structure of language and text and asserting the aesthetic specificity of literary language without resort to visual illustration. Huyssen argues that the miniature subverted the expectations of transparency, easy understanding, and entertainment that mass circulation newspapers depended upon. His fine-grained readings open broad vistas into German critical theory and the history of visual arts, revealing the metropolitan miniature to be one of the few genuinely innovative modes of spatialized writing created by modernism.
