Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS BOOK PREDICTED COLUMBIA DISASTER.. NASA New Millennium Problems and Solutions is a wake up call about the dire conditions of the U.S. space transportation program. NASAs management philosophy of faster, better, cheaper has resulted in the Agency trying to do, too much... with too little... too fast. The space programs momentum has been eroded by NASAs numerous project failures, cost overruns, and mismanagement. NASAs space transportation operations have been compromised to the point where serious safety conditions exist. Astronauts, ground personnel, and even the general public are exposed to unsafe flight operations. This book examines the following daunting questions: Why isnt the Space Shuttle safe? Why doesnt the Space Shuttle have a crew escape system? What happened to NASAs commercial Space Shuttle? Will the International Space Station be worth the cost? Was the X-33/VentureStar launch project a $1 billion blunder? Are the proposed X-33 population over-flight tests safe? Will the human exploration of Mars be postponed for decades? Is there light at the end of this dark tunnel? This book gives the reader with an insiders knowledge of decisions that have placed the future of the U.S. space transportation programs in grave peril. It is a compelling reading for the space enthusiast, the aerospace professional community, those seeking aerospace careers, and political supporters and opponents of the space program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is changing. Many of the most noticeable changes in day-to-day life are associated with the advancing capabilities of computer systems, the growing variety of tasks they can accomplish, and the accelerating rate of change. Advanced engineering environments (AEEs) combine advanced, networked computer systems with advanced modeling and simulation technologies. When more fully developed, AEEs will enable teams of researchers, technologists, designers, manufacturers, suppliers, customers, and other users scattered across a continent or the globe to develop new products and carry out new missions with unprecedented effectiveness. Business as usual, however, will not achieve this vision. Government, industry, and academic organizations need to make the organizational and process changes that will enable their staffs to use current and future AEE technologies and systems. Design in the New Millennium: Advanced Engineering Environments: Phase 2 is the second part of a two-part study of advanced engineering environments. The Phase 1 report, issued in 1999, identified steps the federal government, industry, and academia could take in the near term to enhance the development of AEE technologies and systems with broad application in the U.S. engineering enterprise. Design in the New Millennium focuses on the long-term potential of AEE technologies and systems over the next 15 years. This report calls on government, industry, and academia to make major changes to current organizational cultures and practices to achieve a long-term vision that goes far beyond what current capabilities allow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 5,000-year period from -1999 to +3000 (2000 BCE to 3000 CE), Earth will experience 12,064 eclipses of the Moon. The eclipses are distributed as follows: 4,378 penumbral eclipses, 4,207 partial eclipses, and 3,479 total eclipses. The "Five Millennium Catalog of Lunar Eclipses: -1999 to +3000" contains an individual figures and maps for each eclipse showing the geographic regions of visibility for each phase (penumbral, partial, and total). The uncertainty in Earth's rotational period expressed in DT and its impact on the geographic visibility of eclipses in the past and future is discussed. The statistics of the lunar eclipse distribution over 5,000 years are examined in detail. This includes eclipse types by month and by century, eclipse frequency in the calendar year, extremes in eclipse magnitude for all eclipse types, maximum durations of penumbral, partial, and total eclipses, and eclipse duos (two eclipses within 30 days of each other). Finally, the periodicity of lunar eclipses is investigated with particular attention to the Saros cycle. Tables list the start and end dates, number, and type of eclipses of every Saros series in progress during the 5,000-year period covered by the Five Millennium Catalog. The Catalog serves as a supplement to the 2-volume "Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses" which contains a map of every eclipse. The Catalog and the Canon both use the same solar and lunar ephemerides as well as the same value of ?T. This 1-to-1 correspondence between them enhances the value of each.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unofficially they called themselves the TFNG, or the Thirty-Five New Guys. Officially, they were NASA’s Group 8 astronauts, selected in January 1978 to train for orbital missions aboard the Space Shuttle. Prior to this time only pilots or scientists trained as pilots had been assigned to fly on America’s spacecraft, but with the advent of the innovative winged spacecraft the door was finally opened to non-pilots, including women and minorities. In all, 15 of those selected were categorised as Pilot Astronauts, while the other 20 would train under the new designation of Mission Specialist. Altogether, the Group 8 astronauts would be launched on a total of 103 space missions; some flying only once, while others flew into orbit as many as five times. Sadly, four of their number would perish in the Challenger tragedy in January 1986. In their latest collaborative effort, the authors bring to life the amazing story behind the selection of the first group of Space Shuttle astronauts, examining their varied backgrounds and many accomplishments in a fresh and accessible way through deep research and revealing interviews. Throughout its remarkable 30-year history as the workhorse of NASA’s human spaceflight exploration, twice halted through tragedy, the Shuttle fleet performed with magnificence. So too did these 35 men and women, swept up in the dynamic thrust and ongoing development of America’s Space Shuttle program. "This book on the Group 8 Astronauts, the TFNGs, is an excellent summation of the individuals first selected for the new Space Shuttle Program. It provides insight into what it took to first get the Space Shuttle flying. For any space enthusiast it is a must read." - Robert L. Crippen PLT on STS-1 “As a reader, I had many moments where long, lost memories of the triumph and tragedy of the space shuttle program were brilliantly reawakened at the turn of a page. Loved it! This is a must-have book for every space enthusiast’s library.” - TFNG Mission Specialist Astronaut Richard ‘Mike’ Mullane, author of Riding Rockets: The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut “Many of the anecdotes in the book brought back memories of challenges, opportunities, and a team of men and women who were committed not just to the space program, but to one another...I've gone back to it several times as a reference source.” - TFNG Steve Hawley, 5-time Space Shuttle Mission Specialist Astronaut "The TFNG book is incredible and amazingly thorough! The detail in the book is awesome! It is my go-to book for any of the details I’ve forgotten." - TFNG Dr. Rhea Seddon, 3-time Space Shuttle Mission Specialist Astronaut. "I can't believe how detailed and complete it is!!! FANTASTIC work!!!" - TFNG Robert L."Hoot" Gibson, 5-time Space Shuttle Pilot & Commander and former Chief of the NASA Astronaut Office
