Book excerpt: The report describes the development of a novel electron-beam image-projection exposure apparatus termed the 'slit-lens' system that has been used to fabricate high-resolution patterns for use as microwave-frequency surface-acoustic-wave transducers. Further research efforts include the development of ancillary techniques for making: (1) the intermediate electron-transmission masks required by the slit-lens system, and (2) the thin films necessary for production of metallic patterns on piezoelectric substrates. Various high-frequency surface-wave-transducer structures have been fabricated and electrically tested. The new 'hybrid-grating' transducer has been produced and its performance compared to that of conventional interdigital transducers (at microwave frequencies). A theoretical analysis of the hybrid and grating transducer has been carried out and the input impedance of these transducers has been compared with that of a conventional interdigital structure. Particular attention was paid to the effect of parasitic capacitance on the performance of the various transducers. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The acoustic wave properties of several piezoelectric crystals and a layered structure have been theoretically and experimentally investigated for possible application in microwave acoustic devices. A search was made for crystals and layered structures having one or more of the following properties: (i) temperature compensation, (ii) high piezoelectric coupling, (iii) low power flow angle, (iv) low loss and (v) low or high acoustic wave velocities. The acoustic waves studied were the bulk acoustic waves (BAW), the surface acoustic waves (SAW), the pseudo SAW (PSAW), the plate modes and the surface skimming bulk waves (SSBW). The wave properties studied were the velocity, piezoelectric coupling, the temperature coefficient of delay, diffraction and attenuation. The layered geometries examined studied included fused silica on LiNbO3 and gold, aluminum and copper layers on quartz. The overlay structures were found to be more temperature stable than the single crystals. A theory describing the spectrum of acoustic waves emanating from an interdigital transducer was developed. Several promising cuts for SSBW in quartz were identified and studied both theoretically and experimentally. Finally, various prototype SSBW devices were fabricated and tested.

Book excerpt: In the previous report results on a ZnO on Si convolver were described, where a conversion efficiency of - 55 dBm was obtained. During the reporting period a new type of broadband matching network which makes it possible to increase the bandwidth of the interdigital transducers from 8 to 22 MHz were designed and tested. New types of diffusion layer transducers using p(+) elements laid down in Si were also tested; these can be switched on and off by incident light or by changing an applied dc potential. The work on the diffusion layer transducers to improve their efficiency is also continuing, and to use a new dc sputtering station to make more reproducible convolver devices is also intended. In the last report a new approach to analog/digital conversion was introduced. It operates by comparing a reference signal, having a linearly varying amplitude versus time, with the analog input signal whose amplitude is to be digitized. The reference signal is produced by passing an rf tone pulse through an interdigital acoustic wave transducer. The basic convolution property of the transducer results in the production of the required linearly varying ramp. An integrated circuit comparator and counter are used to produce the digital readout. During the reporting period a first experimental model has been constructed, utilizing a 50 MHz surface acoustic wave delay line, and using four-bit words, which has established the principle of the device.
