Book Synopsis Cold War American Exhibitions of Italian Art and Design by : Antje Gamble
Download or read book Cold War American Exhibitions of Italian Art and Design written by Antje Gamble and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-13 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enriching the existing scholarship on this important exhibition, Italy at Work: Her Renaissance in Design Today (1950–53), this book shows the dynamic role art, specifically sculpture, played in constructing both Italian and American culture after World War II (WWII). Moving beyond previous studies, this book looks to the archival sources and beyond the history of design for a greater understanding of the stakes of the show. First, the book considers art’s role in this exhibition’s import—prominent mid-century sculptors like Giacomo Manzù, Fausto Melotti, and Lucio Fontana were included. Second, it foregrounds the particular role sculpture was able to play in transcending the boundaries of fine art and craft to showcase innovative formalist aesthetics of modernism without falling in the critiques of modernism playing out on the international stage in terms of state funding for art. Third, the book engages with the larger socio-political use of art as a cultural soft power both within the American and Italian contexts. Fourth, it highlights the important role race and culture of Italians and Italian-Americans played in the installation and success of this exhibition. Lastly, therefore, this study connects an investigation of modernist sculpture, modern design, post-war exhibitions, sociology, and transatlantic politics and economics to highlight the important role sculpture played in post-war Italian and American cultural production. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, design history, museum studies, Italian studies, and American studies.
Book Synopsis Exhibiting Italian Art in the United States from Futurism to Arte Povera by : Raffaele Bedarida
Download or read book Exhibiting Italian Art in the United States from Futurism to Arte Povera written by Raffaele Bedarida and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores how Italian institutions, dealers, critics, and artists constructed a modern national identity for Italy by exporting – literally and figuratively – contemporary art to the United States in key moments between 1929 and 1969. From artist Fortunato Depero opening his Futurist House in New York City to critic Germano Celant launching Arte Povera in the United States, Raffaele Bedarida examines the thick web of individuals and cultural environments beyond the two more canonical movements that shaped this project. By interrogating standard narratives of Italian Fascist propaganda on the one hand and American Cold War imperialism on the other, this book establishes a more nuanced transnational approach. The central thesis is that, beyond the immediate aims of political propaganda and conquering a new market for Italian art, these art exhibitions, publications, and the critical discourse aimed at American audiences all reflected back on their makers: they forced and helped Italians define their own modernity in relation to the world’s new dominant cultural and economic power. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, social history, exhibition history, and Italian studies.
Book Synopsis Italian Sketches by : Garrett Rittenberg
Download or read book Italian Sketches written by Garrett Rittenberg and published by . This book was released on 2020-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Garrett Rittenberg set out for Italy to satisfy a long held desire to experience and become intimately acquainted with the country, its culture and its people. By diligently keeping this diary he fulfilled an ambition to write about the country using Italy as a kind of paintbrush and canvas to describe the daily scenes he encountered. He believes that almost everything about Italy is worth mentioning, and his unique observations and rich descriptions of daily life, masterful works of art, architecture, landscapes, and Italians themselves provide a unique view into the life of the country. He deals with sudden bouts of loneliness, struggles with the difficulties and peculiarities of traveling in some parts of the country, yet is more often ecstatic from coming into contact with so many beautiful churches, works of art, graceful people, and delicious food. At the end of the journey, his opinion of Italy is only heightened, and he feels nostalgic before the journey is over.

Book Synopsis Postwar Italian Art History Today by : Sharon Hecker
Download or read book Postwar Italian Art History Today written by Sharon Hecker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postwar Italian Art History Today brings fresh critical consideration to the parameters and impact of Italian art and visual culture studies of the past several decades. Taking its cue from the thirty-year anniversary of curator Germano Celant's landmark exhibition at PS1 in New York – The Knot – this volume presents innovative case studies and emphasizes new methodologies deployed in the study of postwar Italian art as a means to evaluate the current state of the field. Included are fifteen essays that each examine, from a different viewpoint, the issues, concerns, and questions driving postwar Italian art history. The editors and contributors call for a systematic reconsideration of the artistic origins of postwar Italian art, the terminology that is used to describe the work produced, and key personalities and institutions that promoted and supported the development and marketing of this art in Italy and abroad.

Book Synopsis Louisa Waterford and John Ruskin by : Caroline Ings-Chambers
Download or read book Louisa Waterford and John Ruskin written by Caroline Ings-Chambers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisa Waterford (1818-91), modest, retiring, of good family, renowned for her beauty, and with extraordinary grace, was the embodiment of a Victorian ideal of womanhood. But like the age itself, her life was filled with contrasts and paradoxes. She had been born with artistic gifts, and became a satellite of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, though she had no formal training. Then, at the height of John Ruskin's intellectual power and success as a critic, she asked him to accept her as an art student, and he accepted. Their correspondence- often harshly critical, never, as Waterford put it, falsely praising - lies at the heart of this book. These are letters which open a spectrum of discussion on the cultural, gender and social issues of the period. Both Waterford and Ruskin engaged in tireless philanthropic work for diverse causes, crossing social boundaries with subtle determination, and both responded to a sense of duty as well as an artistic vocation. But, as Ings-Chambers shows, their correspondence was more than a dialogue about society: it helped to make Waterford the artist she became.
