PREFACE On The New Hyg1ene, Or The Prevent1on Of Infect1ous D1seases. TT is no small pleasure to me to be asso ciated with the publication of my friend Metchnikoffs Harben Lectures--and I am much honoured by being asked to write a preface to this little book. It is a wonderful and exceptional thing: for here we have the statement of one of the greatest investigators of disease, in the fullness and ripeness of his work and knowledge, placing before the general reader some of the latest results in regard to infection, the part played by those peculiar vegetable organisms--the infective germs or bacteria--the part played by the eater-cells or phagocytes of man when attacked by such germs, and again telling us as to the dangers to civilised mankind of allowing parasitic worms to harbour in his alimentary canal. In the third lecture some of the latest knowledge with regard to the terrible and preventable malady known as Syphilis is set forth in a spirit at once truly scientific and truly philanthropic. These lectures will be read with interest and advantage by medical men, and also by the layman. It is right that intelligent men and women who have not a medical training should follow, so far as they are able, the progress of the warfare waged by such men as Metchnikoff against disease. And it is an immense advantage that they should derive their information on this subject from a great original discoverer, and not from the exaggerated or incomplete gossip of newspapers. Anyone who has a moderate acquaintance with elementary physiology, such as is taught in many schools nowadays, though not in those frequented by the children of the wealthy, can follow Dr. Metchnikoffs exposition and enjoy the admirable method in which he establishes his views...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Three chief evils that hang over us are disease, old age, and death. To study and control senescence, Metchnikoff proposed the establishment of a new scientific discipline he named 'gerontology.' In this classic text on the prolongation of life, Metchnikoff suggests that science should be encouraged and helped in every possible way in its task of removing the diseases and habits that now prevent human life from running its normal course, and his belief is that, were the task accomplished, the great cause of pessimism would disappear. Metchnikoff was able to proclaim himself an optimist, and found, in biological science, for the present generation a hope, or at the least an end towards which to work, and for future generations a possible achievement of that hope." ó From the Introduction by Gerald Gruman, MD, PhD
Book Synopsis Advances in Nutritional Research Volume 10 by : Bill Woodward
Download or read book Advances in Nutritional Research Volume 10 written by Bill Woodward and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Advances in Nutritional Research focuses on colostrum and milk as agents of defense against infection both for the suckling offspring and for the lactating mammary gland. The scope of the volume includes positive and negative influences of the consumption of mother's milk on the risk of infec tion, immunobiological roles of individual milk components, activities of milk and its components in promoting development of neonatal immunocompetence, the potential of milk and its components as therapeutic agents and as functional foods that support immune competence, and external influences that determine the immunological activity of milk. The volume is intended to provide a critical assessment of the limits of available information pertaining to humans and animals, together with authoritative comment regarding newer directions and unproven ideas. Part I provides a foundation for the volume. Readers unfamiliar with immunology will find, in Chapter 1, a selective outline of the anatomy and ontogeny of the mammalian immune system and of the types and regulation of immune defenses in mammals. Some emphasis is given to the place of the mammary gland within the common mucosal defense system, and to important species peculiarities in this regard. Chapter 2 is an authoritative and forward looking perspective on the development of knowledge pertaining to the immuno biology of milk as a fluid with both anti-infectious and anti-inflammatory roles. The chapter poses the provocative possibility of a tolerogenic role for milk.
