Download or read book Deadly Sky written by John C. McManus and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “From the training camps to the combat missions, this is war from the perspective of the young Americans who lived through it: the pilots, the bombardiers, the navigators, and the gunners of all the combat services in both Europe and in the Pacific. It is an engaging and vivid portrayal of war in the skies from 1941 to 1945.”—Craig L. Symonds, Author of World War II at Sea John C. McManus, author of The Dead and Those About to Die and September Hope, reveals the terror and triumph that shared the fiery skies of World War II—from the first dogfights over Europe to the last Kamikaze attacks over the Pacific. This insightful chronicle takes readers inside the experiences of America’s fighter pilots and bomber crews, an incredible assortment of men who, in nearly four years of warfare all over the globe, suffered over 120,000 casualties with over 40,000 killed. Their stories span the earth into every corner of the combat theaters in both Europe and the Pacific. And the aircraft explored are as varied, tough, and legendary as the men who flew them—from the indomitable heavy-duty warhorse that was the B-17 Flying Fortress to the sleek, lethal P-51 Mustang fighter. In Deadly Sky, master historian John C. McManus goes beyond the familiar tales of aerial heroism, capturing the sights and sounds, the toil and fear, the adrenaline and the pain of the American airmen who faced death with every mission. In this important, thoroughly-researched work, McManus uncovers the true nature of fighting—and dying—in the skies over World War II.

Download or read book Neglected Skies written by Angus Britts and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neglected Skies uses a reconsideration of the clash between the British Eastern Fleet and the Imperial Japanese Navy’s First Air Fleet in the Indian Ocean in April 1942 to draw a larger conclusion about declining British military power in the era. In this book, Angus Britts explores the end of British naval supremacy from an operational perspective. By primarily analyzing the evolution of British naval aviation during the interwar period, as well as the challenges that the peacetime Royal Navy was forced to confront, a picture emerges of a battle fleet that entered the war in September 1939 unready for combat. By examining the development of Japan’s first-strike carrier battle group, the Kido Butai, Britts charts both the rise of Japan as a wartime power as well as the demise of the Royal Navy. Japan, by concentrating their six largest aircraft-carriers into a single strike force with state-of-the-art aircraft, had taken a quantum leap forward in warfighting at sea. Simultaneously, British forces found themselves outmatched in this Eastern theatre and Britts makes the case, by looking at a set of key battles, that this is where the global supremacy of Britain’s naval power ended.

Book Synopsis The Sky Rained Heroes by : Frederick E. LaCroix
Download or read book The Sky Rained Heroes written by Frederick E. LaCroix and published by BookPros, LLC. This book was released on 2009 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I asked for action, and I'm really getting it. We had our toughest mission to-date, yesterday. It was a bombing-strafing job on destroyers, and they really threw up the fireworks. It gives you a funny feeling to see all the ack-ack coming and still have to keep on going in. It is a feeling of acute anticipation and mild curiosity-the latter as regards whether it is your turn to get hit. I like combat pretty well. I guess it is a natural desire to like destruction. If you've ever seen six streams of tracers hosing into a target, I think you'd know what I mean. I've flown an awful lot lately (9 hours a day), and hope I can keep it up. However, some replacements came in today, so they will probably ease up a little on the rest of us. I'd rather keep up the steady flying, though. P. S. Guess you've been praying for me quite a bit. At any rate, someone has. Keep it up. There really are no atheists here. Book jacket.
Book Synopsis Assault From the Sky by : John Weeks
Download or read book Assault From the Sky written by John Weeks and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-20 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key look at the history of airborne forces from the Second World War to the 1980s, studying their training and equipment as well as their actions in battle. The introduction of Airborne forces revolutionised military tactics and thinking throughout the twentieth century. In this exciting edition, ex-paratrooper John Weeks presents a history of the Airborne forces across the globe, studying the generals, the planners and parachutists, as well as the aircraft, gliders, weapons and helicopters, alongside a look at their background and their most famous actions, such as Crete, Arnhem, D-Day and the crossing the Rhine. Within each chapter, Weeks presents detailed analyses of the main airborne forces. Airborne raids caught popular imagination from early in the Second World War, when the Germans carried out daring and alarming raids. The assault is fast and dynamic, and most of all, unpredictable, which in the early 1940s led all participants of the war to develop airborne forces of their own.

Book Synopsis Exploring Ancient Skies by : David H. Kelley
Download or read book Exploring Ancient Skies written by David H. Kelley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-06 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Ancient Skies brings together the methods of archaeology and the insights of modern astronomy to explore the science of astronomy as it was practiced in various cultures prior to the invention of the telescope. The book reviews an enormous and growing body of literature on the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean, the Far East, and the New World (particularly Mesoamerica), putting the ancient astronomical materials into their archaeological and cultural contexts. The authors begin with an overview of the field and proceed to essential aspects of naked-eye astronomy, followed by an examination of specific cultures. The book concludes by taking into account the purposes of ancient astronomy: astrology, navigation, calendar regulation, and (not least) the understanding of our place and role in the universe. Skies are recreated to display critical events as they would have appeared to ancient observers - events such as the supernova of 1054, the 'lion horoscope' or the 'Star of Bethlehem.' Exploring Ancient Skies provides a comprehensive overview of the relationships between astronomy and other areas of human investigation. It will be useful as a reference for scholars and students in both astronomy and archaeology, and will be of compelling interest to readers who seek a broad understanding of our collective intellectual history.
