Book excerpt: From measurements in the free boundary layer of a plate the laws governing the velocity distribution and a new resistance law are derived which, by increasing Reynolds number Re(sub x) afford lower resistance values than the logarithmic law. The transverse velocities, the shearing stress, and the mixing path profiles were also defined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiment have been conducted to measure the local surface-shear stress and the average skin-friction coefficient in incompressible flow for a turbulent boundary layer on a smooth flat plate having zero pressure gradient. Data were obtained for a range of Reynolds numbers from 1 million to 45 million. The local surface-shear stress was measured by a floating-element skin-friction balance and also by a calibrated total head tube located on the surface of the test wall. The average skin-friction coefficient was obtained from boundary-layer velocity profiles.

Navy over a 3-year period to evaluate the effects of icing on the operation of the ZFG-2 airship. In supercooled clouds, ice formed only on the forward edges of small protuberances and wires and presented no serious hazard to operation. Ice secretions of the glaze type which occurred in conditions described as freezing drizzle adversely affected various components to a somewhat greater extent. The results indicated a need for protection of certain components such as antennas, propellers, ad certain parts of the control system.

This book was released on 1954 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The angle of inclination of the principal axis was found to have probable error of plus or minus 0.17 degrees both from analysis of the error of inertia measurement of the full-scale airplane and from tests with a model having a simple configuration. Analysis showed the probable error of the inertia measurements for the test airplane to be plus or minus1.00, plus or minus 0.49, and plus or minus 0.35 percent of the true moment of inertia about the X, Y, and Z body reference axes, respectively.

Book excerpt: The rupture-test characteristics at 1350 degrees F of two wrought alloys in the solution-treated and aged condition, NR-82 (6059 modified-low carbon) and NR-84 (N-155 modified-low carbon), and three precision-cast alloys in aged condition, NR-71 (X-40), NR-87 (Co-Cr-Ni base-9Mo) and NR-90 (Co-Cr-Ni base-5Mo, 5W) are reported. The properties are shown to compare favorably with those of the strongeest similar alloys previously investigated. A correlation of NACA and OSRD data is presented, showing the variation of ruture strengths with temperature for the alloys between 1350 degrees and 2000 degrees F.

Book excerpt: The classic textbook on fluid mechanics is revised and updated by Dr. David Dowling to better illustrate this important subject for modern students. With topics and concepts presented in a clear and accessible way, Fluid Mechanics guides students from the fundamentals to the analysis and application of fluid mechanics, including compressible flow and such diverse applications as aerodynamics and geophysical fluid mechanics. Its broad and deep coverage is ideal for both a first or second course in fluid dynamics at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level, and is well-suited to the needs of modern scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and others seeking fluid mechanics knowledge. Over 100 new examples designed to illustrate the application of the various concepts and equations featured in the text A completely new chapter on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) authored by Prof. Gretar Tryggvason of the University of Notre Dame. This new CFD chapter includes sample MatlabTM codes and 20 exercises New material on elementary kinetic theory, non-Newtonian constitutive relationships, internal and external rough-wall turbulent flows, Reynolds-stress closure models, acoustic source terms, and unsteady one-dimensional gas dynamics Plus 110 new exercises and nearly 100 new figures

Horton and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made to determine the effects of boundary-layer control on the landing performance characteristics of a liaison type of airplane having a payload of 1500 pounds and a flight duration of 5 hours. The aspect ratio was varied from 5 to 15, the wing span from 30 to 100 feet, and the brake horsepower from 300 to 1200. The use of boundary-layer control caused reduction in total landing distance (25 to 40 percent), ground-run distance, gliding speed, and stalling speed whereas sinking speed was increased only slightly.
