Book Synopsis African Perspectives on Culture and World Christianity by : Joseph Ogbonnaya
Download or read book African Perspectives on Culture and World Christianity written by Joseph Ogbonnaya and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike the global North, “the ferment of Christianity” in the global South, among the majority of world people, has been astronomical. Despite the shift in the center of gravity of Christianity to the global South, intra-ecclesial tensions globally remain those of the relationship of culture to religion. The questions posed revolve around to what extent Western Christianity should be adapted to local cultures. Should we talk of Christianity in non-Western contexts or of majority world Christianity? Is it appropriate to describe the shift as the emergence of global Christianity or world Christianity? Should Christianity in the global South mimic Christianity in the global North, or can it be different in the light of the diversity of these cultures? Can Africans, Asians, Latin Americans, Europeans and North Americans – the entire global community – speak of God in the same way? This book is devoted to examining varieties of the intercultural process in world Christianity. It understands culture broadly as a common meaning upon which communities’ social order is organized. Culture in this sense is the whole life of people. It is the integrator of the filial bond holding people together and the various institutional structures – economic, technological, political and legal – that guarantee peace and survival in societies, states, and nations, both locally and internationally. As this book shows, the centrality of culture for world Christianity equally showcases the important position the scale of values occupies in world Christianity.
Book Synopsis The Joy of the Gospel by : Pope Francis
Download or read book The Joy of the Gospel written by Pope Francis and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Religions in Latin America written by Virginia Garrard-Burnett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 995 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge History of Religions in Latin America covers religious history in Latin America from pre-Conquest times until the present. This publication is important; first, because of the historical and contemporary centrality of religion in the life of Latin America; second, for the rapid process of religious change which the region is undergoing; and third, for the region's religious distinctiveness in global comparative terms, which contributes to its importance for debates over religion, globalization, and modernity. Reflecting recent currents of scholarship, this volume addresses the breadth of Latin American religion, including religions of the African diaspora, indigenous spiritual expressions, non-Christian traditions, new religious movements, alternative spiritualities, and secularizing tendencies.
Download or read book The New Evangelization written by and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Vatican Council endorsed an engagement with the modern and secularized world through a renewed proclamation of the Gospel. John Paul II described this as the New Evangelization, and in 2010, Benedict XVI confirmed this priority by creating the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization to 're-propose the perennial truth of the Gospel.' The New Evangelization was the subject of the Synod of Bishops in 2012 and in 2014 Pope Francis gave his reflections on the topic in Evangelii Gaudium. The New Evangelization draws on material presented and discussed at the conference 'Vatican II, 50 Years On: The New Evangelization' organised by Leeds Trinity University on 26-29th June 2012. Part I traces the historical and theological links between the Council and the New Evangelization. Part II examines the renewed understanding of the Church as a result of the Council and the extent to which it is shaped by civilization. Part III analyzes the nature of the New Evangelization and its outworking in today's multifarious context of cultures, religions and societies. Part IV deals with the implementation of the New Evangelization by different communities and organizations and the issues this raises. In the Introduction and Conclusion, the editors reflect on the New Evangelization in the light of significant developments since 2012.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a new moment in the life of the Church, a new Pentecost. It's our turn now, to share the great gift we have been given, the gift of our Catholic faith, and renew the face of the earth." - Cardinal Donald Wuerl For the first time since the term "New Evangelization" was coined by Blessed John Paul II, 250 bishops from all over the world were called to Rome by Pope Benedict XVI to discuss it, define it, and determine what it really means to Catholics today. In an exclusive first-hand summary of the three-week Synod, a leader of the gathering, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, provides a succinct, specific and tactical roadmap for where Catholics and parishes and dioceses go from here, including: What's the point? The three most important priorities of the New Evangelization What am I up against? The three "isms" that get in the way of sharing and growing the Faith What do I do? How to galvanize people around one simple truth of the Gospel message Where it all began: The four theological foundations of the New Evangelization Learning from the best: The four characteristics of great evangelizers In addition to personal and group reflection questions at the end of every chapter, Cardinal Wuerl also shares his own personal faith sharing experiences with non-Catholics and Catholics alike and how the insight he gained shaped his own view of the New Evangelization. A must-read for all parish communities
Book Synopsis African Catholicism and Hermeneutics of Culture by : Joseph Ogbonnaya
Download or read book African Catholicism and Hermeneutics of Culture written by Joseph Ogbonnaya and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of Christianity in the non-Western world reveals a demographic shift in the center of Christianity from the Northern Hemisphere to the South. But the contradictory aspect of the massive African conversion to Christian faith is the grinding poverty level in Africa. This condition raises important theological and ecclesiological questions that demand urgent answers. Therefore, the research objectives of this book are to examine African Catholicism's involvement in human promotion and to seek a new way of theologizing Christianity that moves sub-Saharan African peoples to action against the massive injustices that keep them poor. Drawing on Africae Munus, the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation of the Second African Synod (2011), and Bernard Lonergan's notion of culture, African Catholicism and Hermeneutics of Culture argues that to truly be "the spiritual 'lung' of humanity," African Catholicism must appropriate the Christian message to transform African attitudes and personhood and so foster a self-reliant commitment to integral African development.

Book Synopsis Contextualizing Africans and Globalization by : Ibigbolade S. Aderibigbe
Download or read book Contextualizing Africans and Globalization written by Ibigbolade S. Aderibigbe and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consciously interrogates the varieties of opinions with regards to the socio-political and religious dynamics of Africans in the African continent as well as in the diaspora in the context of globalization. It highlights the significance and the consequences of globalization on these areas with regards to the African world views. Through the multi and interdisciplinary discourse in this volume, the diversity of opinions necessary for grappling with the complexity and plurality of global dynamics on various African ways of life are captured. These should give credence to the conviction that answers to questions about globalization of Africa in the past, the present, and projected future can only be provided by Africans and Africanists with the interest of Africa as the sole motivation of content and discontent debates. This volume contributes to such efforts in searching for viable answers to the challenges of globalization in Africa.

Book Synopsis The Possibility of Convivence in Nigeria by : Felix Ikeagwuchi Agbara
Download or read book The Possibility of Convivence in Nigeria written by Felix Ikeagwuchi Agbara and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the present-day democratic government's commitment to human rights, socio-cultural and religious clashes still pose a threat to Nigeria. As a panacea a split according to ethnic and religious boundaries has been suggested; on the other hand upholding the different strands might spell greater benefits for the country's development. The basic assumption of both views is that ethnic and religious pluralism have led to conflicts, but that they are fuelled by politics, inequitable distribution of economic goods and the negative forces of globalization. In this project, examining these conflicts and the efforts made to resolve them, particular attention will be paid to dialogue and reconciliation. The key practice suggested is convivence: a symbiosis of interactive and interpenetrative approaches, based on intercultural and interreligious hermeneutical perspectives.
