Book Synopsis New Directions in Atomic Physics by : C.T. Whelan
Download or read book New Directions in Atomic Physics written by C.T. Whelan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have seen some remarkable advances in the understanding of atomic phenomena. It is now possible to isolate atomic systems in traps, measure in coincidence the fragments of collision processes, routinely produce, and study multicharged ions. One can look at bulk matter in such a way that the fundamental atomic character is clearly evident and work has begun to tease out the properties of anti matter. The papers in this book reflect many aspects of modem Atomic Physics. They correspond to the invited talks at a conference dedicated to the study of "New Directions in Atomic Physics," which took place in Magdalene College, Cambridge in July of 1998. The meeting was designed as a way of taking stock of what has been achieved and, it was hoped, as a means of stimulating new research in new areas, along new lines. Consequently, an effort was made to touch on as many directions as we could in the four days of the meeting. We included some talks which overviewed whole subfields, as well as quite a large number of research contributions. There is a unity to Physics and we tried to avoid any artificial division between theory and experiment. We had roughly the same number of talks from those who are primarily concerned with making measurements, and from those who spend their lives trying to develop the theory to describe the experiments.
Book Synopsis Quantum Effects In The Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model - Proceedings Of The International Workshop by : Joan Sola
Download or read book Quantum Effects In The Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model - Proceedings Of The International Workshop written by Joan Sola and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-08-08 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the first conference on the specific subject of radiative corrections (quantum effects) to physical processes within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). While there have been many conferences covering general aspects of supersymmetry, this one brought together leading experts on phenomenological aspects of SUSY and focused on the search for indirect effects of supersymmetric particles. Participants discussed the status and perspectives of the MSSM from the viewpoint of present and future high precision experiments at LEP, Tevatron, LHC and at a future NLC.

Book Synopsis Techniques and Concepts of High-Energy Physics VIII by : Thomas Ferbel
Download or read book Techniques and Concepts of High-Energy Physics VIII written by Thomas Ferbel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the eighth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High-Energy Physics we returned once again to the Hotel on the Cay on that speck of land in the harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. This time, the ASI brought together a total of 73 participants, from 21 countries. The primary support for the meeting was provided, as usual, by the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The ASI was cosponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy, by the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), by the U. S. National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contribution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as support for worthy students from developing countries. In addition, the International Science Foundation contributed very generously to the support of a participant from Russia. As in the case of the previous ASls, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures, although, unfortunately, short of three contributions, should complement the material published in the first seven ASIs, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the encouragement and support that I have continued to receive from colleagues and friends in organizing this meeting.

Book Synopsis Perspectives on Higgs Physics II by : Gordon L Kane
Download or read book Perspectives on Higgs Physics II written by Gordon L Kane and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-12-04 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model of particle physics is extremely successful in describing nature. It is, however, incomplete in one major way: the masses of gauge bosons and fermions enter the Standard Model through the Higgs mechanism. That is completely satisfactory technically, but it is not understood physically. We do not yet know what nature really does to give mass to particles. Understanding Higgs physics is necessary in order to complete the Standard Model, and to learn how to extend it and improve its foundations. This book is a collection of current work and thinking about these questions by active workers. It speculates about what form the answers will take, as well as updates and extends previous books and reviews. Some chapters emphasize theoretical questions, some focus on connections with other areas of physics, and some discuss how we can get data to uncover nature's solution. This second edition adds information and insights from the last five years, including the recent indirect but statistically significant evidence for the existence of a Higgs boson from precision measurements. It contains contributions from Blondel, Quiros, Haber, Pokorski, Dawson, Janot, Mrenna, Gunion, Ibanez, Ross, Bigi, Carena, Wagner, Georgi, Chanowitz, Yuan, Hill, and others. Contents: What Can Precision Electroweak Data Tell Us About Electroweak Symmetry Breaking? Book Synopsis Beam Measurement by : S. I. Kurokawa
Download or read book Beam Measurement written by S. I. Kurokawa and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the proceedings of the 8th Joint School on accelerator physics. On this occasion, the US, CERN, Japan and Russia Particle Accelerator Schools collaborated to present the topic "Beam Measurements." The aim was to provide an introduction to the principles of beam dynamics and measurements in circular particle accelerators. This was achieved by a series of lectures under the heading of "single-particle dynamics," "beam measurements" and then "multi-particle dynamics," along with practical courses on feedback and data processing, maps and simulation, diagnostic and microwave measurements. The resulting proceedings represent a unique summary of the currently available knowledge on beam measurements applied to circular particle accelerators.

Book Synopsis New Directions in Economic Methodology by : Roger E. Backhouse
Download or read book New Directions in Economic Methodology written by Roger E. Backhouse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a flowering of work on economic methodology. However there is no longer any consensus about which direction this should take or, indeed, even what the role and content of economic methodology should be. This book reflects this diversity. Its contributors are responsible for the major developments in this field and together they give an account of all the major positions which currently prevail in economic methodology. These include attempts to rehabilitate the 'falsification' of Kuhn, Lakatos and Popper, sociology of knowledge approaches, different forms of realism, contributions from the 'rhetoric' project and other perspectives which view the economy as a text.
