Book excerpt: In this work, “New Dimensions of Indian Historiography” the whole period of Indian history, from Vedic to the current period, has been widely and accurately discussed. Along with different schools of historiography, the new emerging Hindutva historiography has been widely discussed. The so-called controversial kings and events which raise the eyebrow of the Hindutva historians have been especially discussed by mentioning the original sources. The relations between Aurangzeb and Shivaji, Akbar and Maharana Pratap, which works as a tool of spreading hatred between Hindus and Muslims have been proved as political and not at all religious relations. The intentionally raised controversy over the mosque at Ayodhya, Taj Mahal and other heritage buildings have also been widely discussed by quoting the original sources and unbiased hypothesis.

Book excerpt: The South India story attempted here is of a peninsular region influenced by the oceans, not by the Himalayas. Yet it is more than that. It is a story of facets of four powerful culturesKannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu, to name them in alphabetical orderand yet more than that, for Kodava, Konkani, Marathi, Oriya and Tulu cultures have also influenced it, as also other older and possibly more indigenous cultures often seen as tribal, as well as cultures originating in other parts of India and the world. With South Indias Malayalam region being (in modern times) the most balanced in terms of religion and also the most literate, its Kannada zone occupying South Indias geographical centre and containing the sites of the Vijayanagara kingdom and also the kingdom of Haidar and Tipu, its Telugu portion the largest in area and holding the most people, and its Tamil part the most Dravidian and possessing the oldest literature, the four principal cultures are, unsurprisingly, competitive. But they are also complementary. This is a Dravidian story, and also more than that. It is a story involving four centuries, the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth, yet other periods intrude upon it...

This book was released on 2009 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A History of South India, first published in 1955, K.A. Nilakanta Sastri provided a comprehensive account of the history of South India. Tracing the history from prehistoric times to the fall of the kingdom of Vijayanagar in 1565 AD, the book incorporated the results of the author's own researches and brought together material previously scattered in separate studies to present a coherent narrative. Over the years the book has achieved a near-classic status. The Illustrated History of South India, an adapted and illustrated version of the original book, aims to sensitize young readers to the country's historic past and rich cultural heritage, and the need to preserve it. Key chapters discuss the coming of the Aryans, the Mauryan Empire, the rise of Vijayanagar, social and economic conditions, literature, religion and philosophy, and the art and architecture of South India. The volume includes an Introduction by renowned historian R. Champakalakshmi, written especially for this edition, and a Prologue by eminent historian P.M. Rajan Gurukkal. Interspersed with photographs and line drawings, including maps and genealogical charts, this illustrated edition will be invaluable for students and teachers of history, in particular, history of South India, as well as general readers. India, which over the years has achieved a near-classic status, this illustrated edition provides a comprehensive account of the history of South India from the prehistoric times to the fall of the kingdom of Vijayanagar in 1565 AD. This volume includes a new Introduction by renowned historian R. Champakalakshmi, and a Prologue by eminent historian P.M. Rajan Gurukkal.

Book excerpt: Historians have long approached the story of the Southern Indians in antebellum America as a story of conflict and resistance in opposition to an expanding United States. Despite violent, diplomatic, and legal attempts to preserve their land, Southern Indians ultimately fell to unrelenting pressure from multiple avenues. With the vast majority of Indians removed from the South by the end of the 1830s, Native Americans seemingly vanish from the narrative of U.S. history and the history of the Old South. Regardless of their pressured relocation, the Southern Indians left an indelible mark on the region, shaping the South. Looking beyond the story of removal and considering the South as an interconnected region, it is possible to ask questions about the impact of Southern Indians in relation to conflicts produced by American cultural and physical encroachment and Native responses to a shifting geopolitical paradigm. With studies of the Old South dominated by a black/white dichotomy and native studies frequently favoring inward looking tribal histories, bridging two rarely intersecting historical subfields offers opportunities for novel assessment and exploration. When considering both Southerners and Indians we can explore new dimensions to major questions in Southern history regarding identity, sectionalism, and violence while complicating assessments of race, class, gender, standardized chronologies, and preconceived geographies. Violence between Indians and Americans in the South, disputes with the federal government over Indian affairs, and criticism from the North over disregard for indigenous rights fomented a Southern regional consciousness. Southerners developed a regional identity through constructing a history shaped by conflict with the Southern Indians and in opposition to multiple disputing groups such as the northern states and the federal government. As a result, from 1811 to 1842, Southern Indians fostered a coalescence of the region's white inhabitants within the United States. Antebellum Southerners from Louisiana to Florida drew upon a constructed common identity from a shared collective experience. With the dawn of the "Old South," Southerners recalled "a long continued course of aggression and sufferings" against Indians fomenting cohesion among white Southerners, diminishing regional divergences and establishing a sectional consciousness.
